i remember this final...Sports Illustrated called in a Duel of Pace and Power and that's exactly what it was. These guys were hitting it deep every time, hitting lines. It was a great match that is not referred to that much.
It was a different game than what was played beginning in the Sampras Agassi era. Sampras simply overpowered guys from the service line. Agassi just pounded guys into submission .and Federer and Del Po can do both
It's not Har Tru...in 1976 the Open was played at Forest Hills...on real clay...it was brown, not like the red clay at Roland Garros. Connors beat Rosewall @ Forest Hills in 1974 on grass, lost to Orantes in '75 on clay, beat Borg in '76 on clay. lost to Vilas in 77 there on clay and beat Borg on hard courts when the Open moved to Flushing Meadow in 78.
The type of game that was played in that era was not the power game that DelPo and Rafa play but it was about guile and tactics and strategy. Both ways are fun to watch
On the contrary it was a power game...those two hit the ball much harder than other players of the previous era...compared to today they didn't hit the bal hard, but that's racquet technology, but both were known for huge groundstrokes...in that day they were the players that pounded the ball off the ground...oh and Vilas too...Lendl is who started the new era we are in today. Once again tho that's technology and also lifting weights...no one lifted back then other than Vilas.
You're absolutely right...I went back after my comment and remembered that it was Har Tru...I actually saw this match when it happened and I don't know why I didn't remember it as Har Tru, but you are right!
When he was young Borg had at best an ordinary serve; arguably poor .. he really revved it up in 1977 and by the time he was 25 he had one of the best in the game .. that said, you can't really see the serve at 1:29 very well, because of the way the clip is edited.
connors alone does not match up to any of the players today. and to say that they are all robots with no charisma, proves that you r an idiot like i said.
The players today are working hard to crack the top ten. And you say players like federer, nadal, djokovic, ferrer, lopez, etc are robots with no charisma?? get out of the past you old scum
It's Har-Tru clay, the most common type of clay courts in the U.S. It rewards power somewhat more than the slow red clay common in Europe, Latin America and elsewhere.
Not so sure about that FTK, the strokes are so powerful today that in 2/3 shots the point is over, i think it was much more exciting back then with more control and variety and touch than now.
i might agree with you on the volleying part of the game!!but federer brought the excitment to tennis with his variety among other players , nadal ,djokovic , nalbandian..But believe me , its still intense!!maybe you cant see it because of federer's domination and having only one rival for now, but still!!this is just my opinion i guess!!!:o)
eh i see u love fed but i differ with ur opinion, the old days of tennis were way more exciting, not just baseline rallys like today. had serve volley, bad ump calls(no computer shot trackin) and better tennis personalities, granted novak is funny! but still cant compare to johnnymacs flipouts.
Tennis may have reached its peak in terms of popularity in the days of McEnroe and Connors .. that's when tennis may have been on par with entities like NBA and MLB in the states .. no longer the case.
Connors won US Open on 3 different surfaces. One of the greatest achievements in Tennis.

Connors and Borg are totally OWNING him forever !
Hell he is not even worth LACING UP THEIR BOOTS !
