@sugarcomatose All the folds need to stitched in place with invisible stitching, this is what I teach in the workshop. If you don't stitch them in place, then they are eventually going to come out and the hat will distort and grow. You also need to put a grosgrain headsize ribbon in the inside to protect the hat from sweat! Thanks for asking!
@luvbyrd60 I use fur felt hoods because they're so malleable and easy to work with but I'm going to transition over to wool felt because I'm allergic to the rabbit fur in the fur felt hoods. Thanks for asking!
You can use a preformed felt hood to make a fedora with a short brim with this same technique. If you want a wide brim, then yes, you need to block two separate parts.
great tutorial! ill try to do one for me very soon;
just a question. could u please tell me what is in the spray bottle? water and glue or just water?
michelegab 3 weeks ago
@michelegab I just use water and if I need to size it (stiffen the felt) afterwards, I spray felt sizing in it from Manhatco or Leko Hats.

I love this! I'm curious though, what part of the hat requires sewing?

Fantastic tutorial, can I ask what happens if you use too much stiffener and it bleeds through can you do anything to save it/reuse the felt?

@bigclockface Sorry I don't know that there's anything you can do to save it. It's happened to me as well.

Pretty cool. I'd like to make a fedora for my boyfriend. Any tips? It seems like you need to attach to separate pieces.
