Watch world's largest earthquake test or capstone test. That is the real materials on 1:1 scale being subjected to a real earthquake conditions. They have both lateral and vertical movements. This video is a promotional joke for BSB.
Do earthquakes really only move laterally in one direction? It seems to me like they are only testing for certain areas. Earthquakes are very different on soft soil/hard soil/bedrock/...
i hope they are playing it right not over and over . because everytime they test a certain magnitude a specific debris keeps on flying the same direction . again and again
I think it is arrogant for you to compare current Chinese development to a first world country like Japan. China is still a third world country, its currently similar to 1970s Japan. So of course there is no comparison.
This is similar to the American laughing at the Japanese in 1960s - Japan is backward, with dangerous building code compared to the more developed American building standard. Of course you can laugh it now, but it only shows your arrogance.
did they use the same material from the real building and just scale it to construct this?? if that is the case, i think they are doing a big mistake... the material on this model, the steel beams material, welding method, screw material, should also be 10x weaker than the real thing... i mean look at the screw and the size of the welding. it is a non-scaled building method on a scaled building test... i don't think it is accurate...
@hwxrichard yes it is... but if u compare the size of the joint and bolt of the real building, and this model... it is still not accurately scaled... i mean if you sca..... .... oh nvm...
@koowilliams Things don't scale on size. You have to increase a support beam 4x to support twice as much weight. So if this model were 1/8 sized they'd have to build it from 1/16th sized materials. If it were 1/32nd scale which looks closer it would need to be built from 1/64th scale materials. Plus the weights are iron and not bolted to the structure so they are dampening the energy. But modeling can't be perfect you just have to model as best you can with a normal effort.
Cool stuff, but judging from the rigidity i would not want to be on the top flor even when the 6 or 7 magnitude quake hit. Even if a rigid structure would hold up, there is bound to be significant stress related damage. The entire building would be damaged even if it was still standing.
@asia911 So long as it's built in the same way, with 1/10 of the weight, and with 1/10 the amount of energy shaking it (as compared to a real earthquake), then it will be an accurate test.
@asia911 I see that u haven't got a clue about structural engineering. This 1/10 model was calculated adequately to its scale (all conexions, beams and poles). In this way we can say, that the model is appropriate to its ten times bigger oryginal structure. Doing this without any calculations would be sensless. I'm truely immpressed seeing this test. Unfortunately i did not have this kind of research on my university:(
@gumbrew You must be stupid to think that miniature material is made of 1/10 of the real product that they are testing. Guess you never heard of gravity. I guessed they are simulate gravity too right?
@gumbrew what you understand is correct, but i don't think these chinese are applying what you studied... i mean look at that screw, it is not 1/10... if the real building is using the exact shape, 10x its size and 10x its strength of the screw, then it would work... i think they should ask the japanese to inspect n consult this test... japan is good at building shock proof building... and the chinese just think they can do everything.

i thought that an earthquake is supposed to behave like a wave, and not like a dog humping a tree stump.

All I know they're building while the U.S. Gov fights over petty shit. Now if those government jobs plans were let loose we'd be building too.

Oh yeh? Then you too ignorant to know to have heard of Great Hanshin earthquake?
It was only measured a small 6.8 scale and yet 200,000 buildings collapsed. So, Japanese build quality? LOL!

If they're using 1/10 scale building then they should use much weaker materials. Not hard steel and big metal screws.
