Zhong Nan Hai is the political complex in Beijing that houses the leader of the People's Republic. Is's essentially the White House or 10 Downing Street...
This is one of the bands that will finally get the Chinese rock scene noticed. There are many good bands in China and there are people working hard to get them out into the ears of willing listeners.
If this band was from Beijing (ie, were not from China), would people care about them? How much of who they are is mixed in with what they are? It this was a bunch of suburban white kids...
people in this world prejudge others, and never ever know who they really are, but just what they read, see, hear, but hardly what they know about the individuals that actually exist.
if some suburban white kids made songs with these melodies, then i'd care. actually, there are a lot of bands made up of "suburban white kids" that i also like.
why the heck do you have to bring racism into this? where all people, we all love, we all hurt, we're all just trying to get by, why does it matter if their "suburban white kids" or beijing kids?
If these were a bunch of suburban white kids they'd be playing to millions of white kids. Instead, they're playing to billions of Asian kids!! Great music!!!
Ummm... Great... But billions? Hardly. i thought this band was from the "Shanghai Underground". Chinese kids listen to maudlin pop that they can sing karaoke to. Whatever, i'll chalk the hyper-language up to enthusiasm.
i still say this is derivative, late eighties to early nineties art-rock though. Just because it is happening in China doesn't really erase that.
Are you sure that Carsick Cars come from Shanghai? I thought they were from Beijing. I do hear a little influence of Sonic Youth in this music, but I wouldn't dismiss this band as totally derivative.
Yeah, Beijing, but China's "art rock/underground/whatever" scene happens to be centred more in Shanghai. i am not saying this band is totally derivative, just saying that if they were white and from the West... Part of their appeal is the context i suppose.
Thanks for playing to a handful of locals in Newcastle, Australia last night.
Great to see you guys, hope you can come back soon!

it s abt a cigarette brand called ZHONG NAN HAI
neo666167 2 years ago
zhong nan hai refers to a couple different things, but this is about a PRC cigarette brand
lyrics are:
zhong nan hai (over and over)
chouyan zhi chou zhongnanhai
--(I) only smoke zhongnanhais
shenghuo libukai zhongnanhai
--(I) can't live without zhongnanhais
shei tama chou le wo de zhongnanhai
--Who smoked my zhongnanhais, dammit?
Great song.
