I used a 1 5/8 in auger bit. And I did it on a drill press. that was the out side dimension of the 1 1/4 pipe.

Why did you actually put the big flange upward?

@Trajiq187 The flange keeps the hook from going into the rack. I put the flange "upward" so that when I rack the bar it didn't get hung up on the short end of the flange. And it also keeps the the wood from getting worn down.
Best looking design I have seen yet.
