Come definire tale perfezione?
Tebaldi has grace, very sweet voice and pretty high range. She must have been twice as good when younger. She has to be in the top five greatest sopranos of all times.
She sound beautifully but i cannot compere her to Callas, she is LA Divina... btw I didn't understood a word. Where is the diction? :/ I love her though!
@humangeorge We all get old. Nobody can sing at 50 the way they sang at 25. It's a depressing thing really. They also lowered the key by a half step.I still think that she sounds good even if she's clearly not at her prime here.
@erginakif I didn't want to critisize this wonderful diva, You asked and i answered. Though I think she shouldn't have transposed down the original key, it is not a desirable thing. If she couldn't afford in the original key to take the high B, she shouldn't have taken this thing. For example, Callas has never allowed herself such things, though I think that it is foolish to compare this two giants, because they have absolutely different voices!
Has anyone else noticed how little she opens her mouth.when she sings.......is this something she did throughout her carreer or only in the last years of her career?
Its interesting how so much sound can come out of so small a mouth opening.....
Is this part of her vocal technique? Has anyone else ever wondered about it??
Anyway - Bava Renata! The most beautiful voice ever!!!!!!!

Where does she get that hair? Her voice had hardened by this time...not easy for her at all. But, with that said...who today has this star quality and diva demeanor?
I agree that she is amazing and that this was a great performance, but it is still second to Maria Callas, in my opinion. As beautiful as Tebaldi is, she doesn't sing this with the same expressiveness that Callas does, and her face remained the same throughout the aria. Callas did not just sing with her voice but with her body as well.
What a fantastic voice. This was right before she retired from the stage. When she retired she still had a powerful and lyrical voice, unlike someone else who should have retired after weight loss wrecked her voice in 1955

Hell then I say get some good mezzo to sing it, most can you know if it is transposed down.

i first saw this video i thought " pity abit too fast not quite the old days". after seeing the others including Gheorghiu its imediately apparent that even this late, Tebaldi is on a diferent planet. Clarity,Diction ,the sound always forward clear . the breath is shorter, but she manages to produce twice the effect of the others with apparent ease. From old tebaldi to young tebaldi there is a loss.Time has robbed us,but Compare her with the others and you realise just what makes her immortal.
Tebaldi knew she couldn't compare to Scotto, Price, and even Callas in this role. It's interesting to note that she had it transposed down significantly.
she's older here. it just proves that she's human too event thought her vocal beauty seems supernatural at times. This was not her best but she's definitely one of the best of all time
Beautiful. A real lady who sang like an angel. Those who are not singers can't know how taxing it is on the voice to sing aria after aria. Thank you for posting this.
Again you.Your miserly work is too evident. You were sending several messages in several Tebaldi videos everyday trying to discredit her but in a cynical way.Don't you know Renata voice is one of the greatest soprano of ever period ? I am sorry for you and your hidden hatred
i was lucky enbough to her Tibaldi at the Met in Tosca and I dare say before she even opened her mouth you knew great sounds would come out of it. Her stage presence spoke for itself and when she exteneded her are she was a goddess to behold and when she sang even if she didn't act her singing was spellbinding. Loved Tibaldi. She was great I am a singer I know. Dont be ignorant go to the opera and learn.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Tebaldi voice problems began when she decided to turn to heavier roles and to make her voice darker when she was around forty. A pitty. The voice became laboured with screaming high notes. The artistry was the same but the voice... That was a wrong step. And a certain teacher "helped" her to darken her sound from lyric to dramatic...
There are a lot of ignorant comments about singers here, meanspirited too. Every artist has something to offer. The fanatical worship of Callas should be taken with a grain of salt. Tebaldi and Callas were both great artists, and both were originals. One is not "better" than the other, just different.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
but when one has a better singing technique than the other, it's very hard to appreciate both artistry equally...not naming any names...but to anyone with a musical ear, its obvious who has the better voice.
Indeed, both ladies are no longer with us, they have passed into history and legend. We shall have to be content with the testimony they left us. Like Wagner and Brahms the controversy belongs to the past, we have the pleasure of enjoying them both. Here Tebaldi was at the end of her great career, she retired from the stage in 1973 aged 52. She left no sad memories of an embarassing decline unlike some singers today (male and female) who will leave behind a ghastly legacy of shame.
nadinaoz, your comment seems rather naive in light of the great number of transpositions that have gone on over the years. Callas sang "Casta Diva" in a transposed key all of her career, while tenors have regularly transposed whose high tessitura no longer suits their voice. You may not like it, but audiences around the world accept it, and love their artists from the beginning to the end of their careers. I am actually quite amazed at how fine her voice sounds here.
When the part of a soprano or a tenor needs to be transposed so that he or she can sing it... everybody knows what it means. There's no place for doubts about it. I see no point of discussion here. Bye.
Don't make me laugh Telltaleheart79, Tebaldi is in fine voice here nov 1973, and her voice is technically well fited, Callas was retired since 1965 and her only '73/'74 tour comeback was a disaster.Tebaldi voice remained till the very end, 1976
This is one of the very few arias she could normally sing in an acceptable way , but still in here she is too old and of course all this concert was a disaster.
What do you mean "she could sing few arias in an acceptable way"? Her voice is still as beautiful as ever with such persuasion. Granted, she's transposed it half-step down, and the money note wasn't as long, but still she delivers a performance to die for, far from a disaster.
Tebaldi was not a great actor and in this was part of so called "an old school". Here she is at the end of her career, what a charm and what a voice ! Not like some other rivals who did sing too long with almost no voice left...
Ok was Tebaldi sick during this concert it was horrible her wording was off this aria omg who am i kidding this song it was not and aria it was just talking on stage and no acting were is the beauty and what happen at the end its te aspetto its not te aspeeeeeeeeee were is the TTO people omg lol
There isn't any excitement here; she is going through the motions. After so many years of performing you would think she had a connection with her audience.
I know that people love her for a reason. I am sure that she took her 'trade' quite seriously. This is why I do not feel comfortable trashign this performance. I just think that with all of the limitations she suffered with her voice, she shoudl have offered something more wherever she had a surplus. She is a great singer but listening to this leaves me yawning. The excitement just isn't there for me.
Its a spit into the audience!!!! Its like she says " I dont bother acting at all, youll take it like this" What about the composer???? What about serving the art at any given time???? Callas was so right about her!
Come definire tale perfezione? Anyone who negatively criticizes this great artist must be both deaf and truly DUMB!!!

she's older here. it just proves that she's human too event thought her vocal beauty seems supernatural at times. This was not her best but she's definitely one of the best of all time

TrovadorManrique 3 years ago
enderezo 3 years ago
enderezo 3 years ago

Tebaldi made her debut in Rovigo in 1944.
In 1946 she made her LaScala debut

Beautiful. A real lady who sang like an angel. Those who are not singers can't know how taxing it is on the voice to sing aria after aria. Thank you for posting this.

E' una Tebaldi decisamente declinante.

Grandissima Tebaldi!

There are a lot of ignorant comments about singers here, meanspirited too. Every artist has something to offer. The fanatical worship of Callas should be taken with a grain of salt. Tebaldi and Callas were both great artists, and both were originals. One is not "better" than the other, just different.

but when one has a better singing technique than the other, it's very hard to appreciate both artistry equally...not naming any names...but to anyone with a musical ear, its obvious who has the better voice.

This is a good performance towards the end of her career. However, it's just average. She was very well-liked by opera goers.
swdanielson 4 years ago
The one and only Renata. Only she can sing "... e un po per non morire al primo incontro, ed egli..." like she did. Brava.
osvaldito55 4 years ago
May she rest in peace. I do not believe
there was ever a soprano that the Met
Opera audiences loved more. She had a way
with an audience unlike most singers.
Her warmth always came across.
She thrilled me many times in performances
at the Met Opera in NYC.

A lesson of italian singing.
No matter tempo changed and vocal decline.
End of the aria is incredible.
And the public understood it very well.

filiodecallas 4 years ago
Oneguin65 4 years ago
nadinaoz, your comment seems rather naive in light of the great number of transpositions that have gone on over the years.

Malibran key for Callas,Caballè....
saverioorlando 4 years ago
When the part of a soprano or a tenor needs to be transposed so that he or she can sing it... everybody knows what it means. There's no place for doubts about it. I see no point of discussion here. Bye.

A little respect please. I agree the concert was a mistake, but so were Callas' comeback performances. Both sang when the voices had gone.
Telltaleheart79 4 years ago
Don't make me laugh Telltaleheart79, Tebaldi is in fine voice here nov 1973, and her voice is technically well fited, Callas was retired since 1965 and her only '73/'74 tour comeback was a disaster.Tebaldi voice remained till the very end, 1976
stome3139 4 years ago 2
This is one of the very few arias she could normally sing in an acceptable way , but still in here she is too old and of course all this concert was a disaster.
suxmdbab 4 years ago
What do you mean "she could sing few arias in an acceptable way"? Her voice is still as beautiful as ever with such persuasion. Granted, she's transposed it half-step down, and the money note wasn't as long, but still she delivers a performance to die for, far from a disaster.
vitellia 4 years ago 4
Tebaldi was not a great actor and in this was part of so called "an old school". Here she is at the end of her career, what a charm and what a voice ! Not like some other rivals who did sing too long with almost no voice left...
embenadorfinearts 4 years ago 2
Ok was Tebaldi sick during this concert it was horrible her wording was off this aria omg who am i kidding this song it was not and aria it was just talking on stage and no acting were is the beauty and what happen at the end its te aspetto its not te aspeeeeeeeeee were is the TTO people omg lol

There isn't any excitement here; she is going through the motions. After so many years of performing you would think she had a connection with her audience.
patjan1992 4 years ago
I know that people love her for a reason. I am sure that she took her 'trade' quite seriously. This is why I do not feel comfortable trashign this performance. I just think that with all of the limitations she suffered with her voice, she shoudl have offered something more wherever she had a surplus. She is a great singer but listening to this leaves me yawning. The excitement just isn't there for me.
rksu747 4 years ago
Its a spit into the audience!!!! Its like she says " I dont bother acting at all, youll take it like this" What about the composer???? What about serving the art at any given time???? Callas was so right about her!
