God save these gys on every run and god save their engines :) stay save in every situation :) grate response and very very greate job @ the box. greez Chris, FDNY Ladder Co. 4 Midtown House Manhatten
its funny how they got smoke showing like 3 seconds in and then wait a little longer 2 call it in for heavy smoke showing. love all the guys in the bfd great guys good fire tactics , i find it weird that 22 always beats 31 to may street even though 31 is 1st due on that box. i got another vid of a fire on may street with 22 beating them. o well lol
I'm pretty sure I can tell you what that hissing sound was when they first arrived on scene, we had it a few months ago at one the house fires we responded to. It was an oxygen cylinder, and yes more than likely the power lines came down as a result of the fire.
I completely disagree and this is the statement that would have been popular about 50 years ago!
Take an aggressive engine company operations class the next time you see one available in your area!
Taking time to stretch a line around to the rear, charge the line, commit to an advance throughout the ENTIRE house to reach a fire that was 20 feet away from you in the first place is NOT the way we should be operating in this day in age!
An aggressive engine company will EXTINGUISH fire as they advance. Some fire may be slightly pushed, but if a steady, deliberate advance is made (and the company does not stop at the doorway) , the fire will certainly go out!
A person stating, "ALWAYS ATTACK FROM THE UNBURNED SIDE" has never dealt with the following:
- Vacant buildings - heavier security in rear
- Pack rat conditions - may not allow advance front to rear
- Renovated buildings (front may not be accessible from the rear)
- Heavy fire conditions - preventing an advance to the front from the rear
- Row buildings - Rear not accessible PERIOD, without stretching through another building.
- Preconnected attack lines - May not make it to the front if stretched to the rear
- 2nd floor searches - Stairs usually in front
While the "attack from unburned" theory is nice, it is a theory. It is NOT PRACTICAL in most cases! Stretch to the front, PUT ALL OF YOUR GEAR ON, bleed the line and go through the front door!
Hey I will say this that Co. 22 is the best on the east side, They work hard and play even harder, I have a lot of respect for all there members and know a few as well, I remember when the city try to shut Station 22 down, we all stopped that for the time, Love you all.... and yes I did live there on ashley st near 22
not to take shots i dont know much about BFD...but 2.5? why not lots of fire give it a whack with a big line....the 1.5 or 1.75 being used is going to be laughed at
The house wasnt fully involved only front half was going, the 1 3/4 was preconnected to the pump and a quick attack line,I dont know many that want to wrestle a big line through a house for a fire that was knocked down in ten minutes with the small line.
I would have to disagree with the statement that you ONLY need 1 3/4 2.5 is very effective in high volumes of fire for inital darkening down....nobody wants to work with 2.5 ne more but truth is its very effective! sometimes you have to get over the heavy or bulk issue and just do it!
You are correct that it is very effective for high volumes of fire, but I do not consider this a "high volume of fire". You have nothing more than a 2-3 room fire here.
I believe that had the same company arrived to this fire WITHOUT an exposure problem, they would have stretched and 1 3/4" to the front door and gained their "initial knock-down" as they were pushing through the front door and knocking the other two rooms down.
The 1 3/4" for a one, two, three or four room fire in a PRIVATE DWELLING or APARTMENT building. This fire is well within the realms of an 1 3/4" and it will not be "laughed at" by the fire!
Buffalo apparently chose to give it a hit with a 2 1/2" so they could get two jobs accomplished simultaneously (main fire building & exposure). Nice job!
This building WAS NOT fully involved! 2-3 rooms were burning in the front. Just because fire is showing does not constitute the words "FULLY INVOLVED"
should have made a quick knock down (10 to 15 seconds) then went to the exposure then went back to the main fire dwelling and put it out.......Looks to me like the first in engine did basically nothing and the second in engine put the fire out.
Hinesight is 20/20, They could have gone in and made a quite knockdown but I have other vids where the fire is pushed to the side door and next thing you know the 2nd. dwelling is going. If you watch the vid again youwill notice the second line is being held by two Lt. the one on the nozzle is the lt. from the first in eng. P.S. notice how long it took the second crew to get there shit(Gear) on.
In a situation like this with a rapidly extending fire, the first due engine should do what they did. Protect the exposure, then if conditions warrant attack the main body of fire.
It sucks to be the first due engine if faced with this situation (especially if under-staffed), but in order to operate PROFESSIONALLY, it is what needs to be done.
PROFESSIONALISM is NOT synonymous with FIRST DUE! In this case, it worked out and they got both assignments done and also got the fire building!
Engine 22.....Rocks!!! They have many tough calls to answer........many arson fires.....and ....shootings.....ITS GOTTA BE VERY DRAINING!!!!! I salute them...:):):)
money probs. have got rid of Eng.18, 3 & 22 Have a bigger running area. In 2009 I was told that Eng. 3 Will Change to Feed 3 Because it seems thats all they do. They are the fastest at backing down a street in Buffalo.( 18 Use to be )HaHa
How do you fire fighters deal with live power lines? The fire itself is dangerous enough but damn

Let's see, with Engine 22 as first-in engine, it would be Engines 22, 28, and 31; Ladders 14, 15, and 6. Rescue 1, B46, 56, F-8, and F-20.
