Yes, Maltese are very cute, and intelligent too. In fact, as research has shown, Maltese are amont the most intelligent of all dog breeds, second only to the Border Collie.
It's so encouraging to see videos of Maltese dogs doing tricks. My dog, 4 1/2 months, is a Maltese x Shih-Tzu, and he gets distracted so easily. He knows sit, down, teaching up now, come, go, wait/stay... Hopefully can get him in a school or something. :/
Please read all the posts in the Misty video seires. There you will find answers to all your specific dog training questions as all of my training methods and techniques are explained in detail within the posts.
My Maltese dog ( Biscuit) I kinda of still in the training i want it to learn how to sit but i guess we need to bond some more, I was looking on the internet and found nothing but i suddenly found video's of other peoples Malteses and they are really housekept so i hope that, that could happen to me and anyway I had got the dog for free. ^.^

Thanks for the kind words. And that's why I have posted Misty's videos and try to respond to each and every post... So that others too can learn to train their Maltese to become simply the best pet ever.
There are many good books on dog training and each of them have valuable tips and techniques on how to train a Maltese. Indeed, I have also read many of them and incorporated much of that information into Misty's training regime.
Please got to a Maltese rescue group. There are wonderful beautiful dogs ready for you and not near the cost from breeders. usually at least $1,000.00. I got a 'pair' and Immed spayed and neutered. They are so close. Ricky & Lucy. I love them and they are gorgeous! I need to get a video camera and learn how to 'you tube'. Best of luck and you won't be sorry with a Maltese. They are so loving and loyal. I've always had large dogs, Retrievers. I am spoiled now! no going back!
just type in "Maltese Rescue" in your 'search' google or what ever you use on your computer and put in your city with it. Something should come up nearby and contact them. Some rescues charge minimal for vacs and neuter, whatever it will be much much less than buying from a breeder and you will know more about the dog. A lot of groups will help you, that is what they are there for. Good Luck!
When you give the "speak" command, you also have to go "ruff" (speak) yourself at first. Soon enough, your dog will get the idea that you want HIM to speak when you give the "speak" command.
Misty is soo cute! And smart! I've been thinking about getting a Maltese myself, but i've read that they are resistant to strangers and don't like to be around anyone but the owner.. Also, that they bark a lot. Everyone I know seems to love their Maltese, but it would be great to hear from a real owner. Any help would be great!
I have maltese dog and she is great. No, malteses are cute and playful dog. They like to be with people. My does. She even follows me to the bathroom. You will fall in love with them. But, like all dogs, basic training is a must.
Indeed, I agree that basic training is a must... And the sooner you start, the easier your training efforts will be because a young Maltese puppy WANTS to learn.
By barking out loud (like a dog) right after giving her the command to speak. Yes, I barked a lot at Misty when teaching her to speak. Eventually, she figured out that what I really wanted was for HER to bark!
Hi, I have a very smart maltese male who is about 5 month and can do tricks like beg, high five, speak, sit, down, dance on his backlegs and so on. The only thing I've go a problem with is roll over. How should I do? Ive tried to give him a treat when he just lies down and then looks over his shoulder but I can't go forward. please help!
Teaching your Maltese to roll over is best accomplished by using hand signals in conjunction with the verbal command. Watch the video again and notice the hand signal when the "roll over" command is given. Practice this technique with your dog and you'll have your Maltese rolling over in no time!
Hi, i already teached my maltese how to sit, by pushing her bottom down every time i said sit and giving her a treat. gradually, she did it her self and now she sits! However, i love that BANG! trick ur dog does when she plays dead. How did u managed to teach her that? Is it by positioning her back on the ground and saying bang at the same time and giving her a treat afterwards like sit? thanks.
When you teach your Maltese "Bang" (lay down and play dead) you have to help guide him down on his side after giving him the command, then immediately give him a treat when he is laying down. Eventually he'll get the idea that you want him to lay down when he hears the "Bang" command.
At around 10 to 12 weeks, most Maltese are ready to learn to obey simple commands like "sit" and "down." But do be patient. It takes a lot of time and patience to train a young Maltese puppy. And don't forget to practice each and every day.
Hi I recently just got myself a maltese. He is 14 weeks old but every time I try to train him he prefers to walk to his bed, even with the bed removed he will sit in a corner or anywhere he will feel cosy in. What do you recommend? I used to have a chow chow but she learnt each trick within less than a day so I am being very patient with this one =)
However the only thing I can think of is to use a leash to stop him walking away??
When beginning your training regime, timing is everything. I have found that most Maltese are more receptive to training first thing in the morning after a good nights sleep. That said, begin your training immediately after you dog wakes up first thing in the morning. He'll be both alert and active and hopefully ready to give you his complete and undivided attention.
My Maltese Puppy is able to sit and stay but we cannot teach him how to lie down. We have already tried making him sit and then putting a treat on the ground in front of him in my hand but he just stands up.
Check out your local community center school for group dog obedience and training classes. They're inexpensive and they work wonders for teaching your dog (and you) how to cooperate with each other. Misty attended several of these courses and got better and better after each one. She now listens and completey obeys as a good dog should.
A very important part of dog training is teaching your dog to obey your every command; especially when there are many distractions. So whenever your dog seems to be preoccupied with everything else except you, that's a good time to sneek in a little distraction training because one day, it just may save your dog's life; especially if she gets loose and starts running toward a busy street. Knowing how to obey your "STOP" command will help keep her out of danger.
Indeed, the Maltese breed is among the smartest of all dog breeds. Perhaps because the Maltese breed dates back to over 8000 years and is among the oldest of all dog breeds, they tend to have an edge over most other dog breeds with respect to their intelligence and aptitude for learning.
you are a very good trainer but i did catch some errors. i dont mean to be negitive but at around 1:96 you gave her a treat when she did "bang" when she was suposed to do "down". a lot of trainers do this and its sort of like a pet peeve of mine...
Indeed... Misty was just a five month-old pup in this first introductory video. That's why I sometimes overlooked the response and gave her the treat anyway. It kept her motivated to keep listening and learning. She now has the commands completely mastered so be sure to check out Misty's videos #2, #3, and #4 for even more great new tricks.
The Coton de Tulear is a bigger dog with a shorter double coat. The two dogs are related though. Love your Maltese. How much dig she weigh as an adult? Mine is 7 pounds and Im having a real hard time finding one six and under. Id like two to keep each company eventually.
Two different breeds entirely. Although somewhat similar in appearance, the Couton is considerably larger than the Maltese and often reaches 10 to 14 lbs or more as an adult whereas the Maltese tops out at around 6 lbs.
When teaching any new dog trick, in the beginning, you sometimes have to help the dog "physically" do what you want her to do. For example, when teaching "bang" (play dead) you have to gently guide her body to the down position until she lays on her back with her eyes looking up at you. And once she's in that position (even though you helped here to get there), you say "Good Dog!" and give her a treat. Eventually she catches on and does the trick all by herself.
When training your dog, always use positive "treat" reinforcement only, never hit or scold your dog if he/she is slow to learn, use only single-word commands, have a LOT of patience, teach only one new trick per week, give lots and lots of praise when he/she finally gets it right, and PRACTICE with your dog at least twice per day. Good luck and have fun!

If you want an obedient dog, then it's basically up to you to do the training. You must become the alpha dog that gives the orders.
