@lenator100 Doesn't look too bad sitting in front of your computer, try being on the plane when it hits the runway suddenly, I think you will find it is pretty scary esp when some fellow passengers are in tears and others are saying the landing gear could be broken.
@jas47679 I was getting over my fear of flying as was doing a lot of it, this incident set me back a good bit, I now usually hit the bar beforehand :-)
The sound of that abrupt wind change is terrifying....you could hear the sound of the engines change completely as the wind sheer just threw it down towards the ground. I agree with that guy below, who said be thankful it was a few hundred feet higher, as that would of smashed that small jet to peices and possibly been fatal!! But you cant blame the pilot, wind sheer is instantaneous and almost impossible to prevent, especially with small wing based jet aircraft!!
No, it's actually called wind shear. Other than your incorrect declaration at the beginning, it was interesting. I would have been so scared. I'm surprised there isn't as much fuss from the other passengers.
@Elemarth I'm surprised that he still aborted the landing in wind shear. I would think it would have been more unsafe to try stay airborne in wind shear
I think I was on that flight, if it was Jet2 from Rome, it eventually landed at Robin Hood airport, my boyfriend will not fly Jet2 anymore, it did not really bother me, from Leeds, get used to it.
I actually enjoy the music added to this vid.... and before you bitch and whine about it, try to remember all the vids using "Dreamscape" as their soundtrack and count your blessings.
@walnutgoat1 Afraid I am going to have to disagree with you on this one. I do not believe wind shear had anything to do with this. I think it is most likely the PF was coming in either to slow or flared a little to late resulting in the hard impact. I believe the engine spool up was primarily to try to soften the blow but unfortunately to little to late. I do agree with you though that the decision to go around was very wise. Unfortunately for us, only the pilots know what this was about.
i think it might have been a go around training .. and when the tower asks about the reason , they claim " we had an abnormal landing gear light " .. thats how it happens
It took me a bit to think about how to judge this landing. You can tell there was a drop due to the wind that caused impact and the go around. At 3:15 notice the red building just passed and touchdown occurs right after the long green building. At 7:53 the red building just passed then the long green building and finally the long white building before touchdown where you can see the markers on the runway. Hey at least it wasn't a touchdown in the field short of the runway. Thanks for the upload.
I had this on full screen and my heart was in my throat, I am so glad your ok though, whew. that is one hell of an ordeal man. I'm flying into Dublin and Manchester in a couple of weeks, I hope the weather will be gentle on us lol. Great vid, keeping it together to film while in that. two Thumbs up!
I would like to share this experience. I had the opportunity to take off in a Lufthansa 737 in the middle of a storm. I remember how I was staring at the swinging left wing and to the left engine, wabbleing into its nacelle
Indeed. It is a BAe 146, a plane strong and powerful, designed to operate in bad weather conditions specific to UK. It is smaller than a Boeing 737, but has the wing on the upper part of the fuselage, and has 4 engines. its landing gear is designed quite similar with an aircraft carrier jet fighter, strong enough to withstand brutal contact with the tarmac. I think that an 737 would have crashed or redirected to other airport
Damn... it hit hard! I was in an airbus coming from Memphis to Vegas that hit SOOOOO hard I thought the plane was gonna break in half. Seriously...I was worried for anyone who flew in that plane after wards. Hit SOOOO hard it's the kinda thing you can only experience. As far as I know it didn't blow any tires though. Imagine how HARD that plane that Billy Mays was on hit...it blew tires and stuff fell down out of the bins. I think we forget how BIG and powerful these things REALLY are!
must have had a wicked change in wind direction just before landing, had a drop in air speed, probably nailed the throttle to abort, but still nailed the runway. I wouldn't be suprised if some of the strut linkage needs a looking at after that 500 fpm drop onto the runway.
Wait until you travel at 120mph down the tracks and somebody suddenly steps out in front of the train. When that happens and you still keep your calm and help/comfort the passengers afterwards. Then i guarantee you will have their respect aswell
No hard feelings mate, i was a little harsh with that comment, sorry. I just had a shitty day with lots of irritating passagers. I'm a Danish locomotive engineer if you hadn't guessed :-), well probably not the danish part anyway...
It's quite obvious that you know nothing about trains. Most people think it takes a 5ton concrete block to derail a train or cause major damage, but that couldn't be further from the truth. In a time where the planes land themselves I think it's quite weird to say that pilots are better than most. As one of my instructors once said. "A monkey could operate a train or a plane. It's only when problems arise the training shows itself". But then again. Genius is in the eye of the beholder.
I'm a trainee pilot and basically you have to accept that that plane was set up perfectly to land, the pilot in command was no happy with the way things were going and he always had the power at his disposal which allowed him to go around an approach from a different angle. Why force a landing? Excellent pilots.
You gotta love the amount of "experts" on here, all with their own ideas about why a skilled and trained professional chose to discontinue the approach. My best guess is crosswind or windshear on final, but it would be only an educated guess. I suspect being there would be the only way to know for sure. Great video, cheers for posting.
Those "experts" are probably all playing Flight Simulator. And because they make good landings in that game they think they are just as good as real pilots. The comments on plane video's are filled with these so called "experts".
youre exactly right, i fly gliders, but i cannot also excactly sa, if it was good, bad or what else. so everybody who have never flown a plane (gllider, or aircraft) shutup

Tough to tell from inside the airplane what the abort criteria were -- my guess is that they were sideslipping for a stiff cross-wind and had decided beforehand that they were on automatic go-around if the deflection got larger than X. In other words, I don't think it's pilot error.
We make ourselves less safe, actuarially, when we slur pilots for taking go-arounds. They should be taking *more,* not fewer.
you can here the engines power up before they even land so the pilots were doing a TOGA before the landing and i think that 1 they were to fast on the final and 2 they were trying to land in a crosswind
If they had been going too fast, they wouldn't have had any issues stopping the descent and NOT doing a touch and go. Sorry, but I find the theory of going too fast to be a non-starter. And in case you didn't notice, it was said to be, and appears to be, wind-shear.
Erm, and you don't do a TOGA. You go to TOGA power, you take-off, and you go-around. But you don't TOGA.
i was on a continental flight into chicago midway that did a "touch and go". scary as hell when you're expecting to be on the gound, but i trust the pilots to know when its not safe
The pilot must have aborted the landing because maybe he was landing pretty late and have to trun around and land again...And this time he kinda made it...
What scares me is when the pilot doesn't explain what he is doing after this sort of thing happens! Just a little reassurance that he had to abort and is going around, nothing to panic about.
I was on a plane going back to Ottawa (YOW International Airport) and our ladning gear were'nt coming down. So we circled for about 10-15 min to manually get the landing gear down....the flight attendents had to get the manual -.-
Really that was not that bad

i was on a continental flight into chicago midway that did a "touch and go". scary as hell when you're expecting to be on the gound, but i trust the pilots to know when its not safe

he hit the deck pretty hard the first time around...damn

The pilot must have aborted the landing because maybe he was landing pretty late and have to trun around and land again...And this time he kinda made it...

What scares me is when the pilot doesn't explain what he is doing after this sort of thing happens! Just a little reassurance that he had to abort and is going around, nothing to panic about.

I was on a plane going back to Ottawa (YOW International Airport) and our ladning gear were'nt coming down. So we circled for about 10-15 min to manually get the landing gear down....the flight attendents had to get the manual -.-
