Last week at my school I mentioned that I run linux at home and a student says " hey i run linux too!" I was like "Ok name some linux distros" he's like "Ok there is linux xp, linux 7..."
I was saying there is no such linux -.- here let me try, there is Ubuntu, Slackware, Zenwalk, Red hat linux, Fedora, Grml, Knoppix... " I can name millions by memory. So he was suprised like "woah i... yeah i know that" I know he's just being a goof. Just thought I'd tell that funny goofy school story.
@grouchypus, interestingly. The mac having special hardware is a common misconseption. In fact Mac's have the same hardware, including the same graphic cards and hard drives as PC's. The only difference is that Linux in more secure due to harder crypto and better control over slack space.
@SolarisZen The REAL difference between Macs and every other system out there is that Macs don't have a standard BIOS, which makes it a pain in the ass for hackintoshers.
@SolarisZen no I agree with Linux first- becuase Linux is free and with Wine- you can run windows executables, but Windows is MUCH better then macs, bc macs cant run any games or any good applications, also apple computers cant be upgraded hardware, if you want a new graphics card in an imac- you have to buy a new god damn mac. get Linux and dual boot Windows 7
@SinX26Group However if you want to play video games then Windows is the way to go. While there are games for Mac and Linux Windows has a lot better driver support for graphic cards and has bigger choice of games (and programs for that matter). I think you should go with Windows simply because it still is mainstream OS (btw Apple is name of company that owns OS X and Mac is name of their computers MacBook Pro etc...) peace :D
@SinX26Group I take your joking. but in the olden days Mac used to refer to Apple pc + os while PC used to refer to IBM PC + OS(Dos/Win). Linux is always itself no matter where.
Leopard shirt looks awesome. I hate to say that Linux doesn't keep up with the latest trends, most of the new versions still have the dated UI. We have to hunt for themes to replace those ugly UI layouts? It will happen in the future but this video is a lie.
@megamanxtreme2 I think the designer, boutique and vintage clothes markets are different from even the consumer OS ones, but from MacPup to Zorin5, things are looking up. Except this video, which needs to be shot or produced in 720p and encoded with more care.
@Cineenvenordquist Nice, I didn't know about those, they have to be rare. Fedora Core 16 is looking up but when they showed OO, the layout was dated on the window. I'll try out Zorin since it's a big file.
@JIHLucky7 umm no. the first personal computer was from apple. soon after bill bought DOS. windows didn't even come out until after they took the UI from an apple model.
i had ubuntu 10.10 but while i was updating the kernal it froze so i had to force shutdown after that it stoped loading. now i am back to windows on a new pc. i like Ubuntu except for the no games part and the freezing part
Have they come out with a kernel (3.2?) that doesn't turn my battery from 7h is windows to 2h30 in Linux? I really want to go back to linux but it just eats all my battery :(
Linux is not user-friendly (compared to a user with 0 tech knowledge), plus most PC's come with Windows (7) installed anyway, so no one really "pays" for Windows; for most non-techies it comes pre-installed on their PC.
I like linux but i don't believe that linux is ready for desktop and the average windows user and i dont think programmers trying very hard to make it.
I hate very much dependencies... i know know they are resolving automatically lol
I hate to edit textfiles to configure my system.
I hate that it don't have many apps and almost NO professional apps.
Mac osx would make the difference if it could run in any pc.
It is the single fastest growing/changing software known to man. (the kernel.)
Anyone who can understand C programming can help the development, right now, without any signup.
It runs on 85% of the world's supercomputers.
I can render 3D graphics (not video games) faster, get better recording/editing quality, use an android to get video from a surveillance I set up, install it on my router, and do anything Windows and Mac do, for FREE.
Ok... Linux actually CAN run modern video games, that's not the problem... (As long as you have the required hardware and drivers)
The main problem with linux and videogames is that companies don't develop games for linux, since it has no (read: little) market share... There are of course some developers working for linux (and/or windows as well), for instance, the people at frictional games (Amnesia: The dark descent, or Penumbra)...
@t0m4t3 So how does that affect people who like video games and use linux? Is it easy to play mainstream games, or is it a massive hurdle of driver installing and hacking every time?
@32BitJunkie If it's a linux compatible game, it will, of course be ridiculously easy to play that game. If you want to play a windows game, you may use WINE, but it will need probably some hacking, and it will lose some (It really depends on wine version, the most modern, the better) speed.
@IamDUFF C is kind of an older language at this point. It's best to move on to newer languages with more features such as C++, Java, or C#. I personally prefer C# but any of those three languages would be suitable for a modern operating system. I'm not saying C is useless and obsolete. It's just that if you want more developers for your platform, C# and Java are easy to learn.
@drolandcorp Not all of the games though. Especially not the new ones that invoke the latest DirectX API's. As far as I know, DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games are not compatible with WINE and many DX9 games have issues as well. Currently, WINE is only good for more simple games like Counter Strike. But it's useless for modern games like Gears of War, Mass Effect, Halo 2 Vista, etc.
@Generalkidd true, i failed to consider that, but there are other programs, such as crossover that can allow even DX11 games to run, for a small fee of course.
@drolandcorp If you're going to pay to use crossover (proprietary), doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of open source though? You might as well just use Windows which has native DX11 support with no compatibility problems at all. And from what I read on their website, CrossOver currently does not have support for DX10 or above. DX9 is a bit glitchy. Plus, not support for anything above .NET 3.0 which is necessary for many new games. If you're a gamer, you really need Windows.
@IamDUFF As a 16 year user of Linux, I might take this moment to quote the (often quoted) Jamie Zawinski - not because I'm not clever enough to be quotable, just that he often gets there first - "Linux is free if your time is worth nothing." I now run a Mac desktop fulltime, but figured out quite some time ago that crappy second class hardware support just isn't what I want out of life. My Mac? Its literally switch on and its all automatic, because I'd rather code than configure.
@goingwithzed That JWZ quote's outdated; at least for the money shopping with MacOS feels like with each item something is cared for, sometimes effusively. But sometimes I like chocolate, I mean; Samsung, say. Linux has more bounty hunters than tentpole pixelsmiths. Microsoft...has started to maintain their code!
@IamDUFF yeh, but tbh, if i want to, lets say, play minecraft, I don't want to learn programming to be able play that, no thanks, ill stick to my good computers
@1ma4ighter The problem with open source is that it tends to lack the quality and support that proprietary software when backed by multi-billion dollar corporations have. OpenOffice is no where near as good as Microsoft Office. Businesses and schools prefer Microsoft Office over OpenOffice anyday despite the price difference.
hey, I've been to school. . .two questions in my math paper for my last final were wrong
and those idiots put the memo in our final business paper, instead of the question paper. . .
I understand why they'd use microsoft office. . .btw: how much more do you think i know than them about software? i build software. . .they teach young children to grow up and become people who can't judge between good and bad software and ultimately don't know how computers work
@1ma4ighter And you're wrong about open source always setting the trend. Take Kubuntu and the KDE Plasma desktop. It's obvious that was based off of Windows Vista's Aero interface. Open source depends on people who can invest their free time in order to improve the project while proprietary software depends on how many billions of dollars are invested. Money tends to win over voluntary generosity.
@drolandcorp Except back then, KDE was nothing like Vista. KDE was more like Windows XP back then. About 1 year after Vista was released, KDE was upgraded with the new Plasma Desktop so it has several effects that imitate Vista's new Aero interface.
@1ma4ighter It doesn't matter how much older Kubuntu is. KDE didn't support the Plasma Desktop until AFTER Vista was available. Generally, if you want something new, it'll be available as proprietary software first. And proprietary software tends to be better too. Adobe Photoshop will always be better than any open source alternative for awhile. The tools available are amazing and usually well documented. Plus, you get support from the corporation.
@JajajxDDADAKAJAJJA Are you serious? While I personally am not a regular user of photoshop, I do know for a fact that it *currently* provides more tools, more convenience and more support than any other photo editing software out there regardless of proprietary or open source. Likewise Microsoft Office is no doubt better than OpenOffice or iWork or any other office suite out there.
@Generalkidd Actually no. Most people (especially governments) are moving to OpenOffice because microsoft office has broken ODT support, which is the international standard for documents.
@barbariandude However, the US government specifically still uses primarily Microsoft products such as Windows and Office. The majority of large corporations also use Microsoft products almost exclusively. And whether it's true or not that people are switching doesn't really matter. A shift of a few percentage points of market share is negligible. MS Office market share has hardly changed and continues to dominate the world.
@Generalkidd That is actually the best part about Linux: Because the waist majority is lazy and stupid we can foresee that in the near future Linux will not be represented very great in the desktop-market. This has a big advantage: It will stay secure with almost no need to really secure your computer, while being the best and most easy to manipulate software available. And all that for free. Thank you, Microsoft.
@leonavis That's not necessarily true. While Windows does have the most viruses compared to any other platform, that doesn't mean Windows is more vulnerable. Take a look at android which is having an emergin ging virus problem now. Android is based on Linux. Personally ive never had a virus while using windows. Im careful about what i download from the internet. Windows is in reality pretty secure with daily security updates. How long does it take Linux to get major updates?
@Generalkidd Not long. And, that was my point, there are no viruses made for Linux desktops; it's not popular enough.
Android is something different, because it is quite popular.
Even if you are skilled and experienced with PCs, you cannot compile your own Windows-kernel with only that hardware supported that you use. You always have lots of programs and libraries that you would never install. That is the great thing about Linux: It is your choice, not your maintainers.
@leonavis Linux and Win 'desktops' are both unpopular; so viruses are written to the common apps, with the advantage that they may work on Mac lately. This ruins the otherwise good chance that Mac Malware merely wants to change a color scheme and fix some ugly menus, add throw pillowsֻ
@Generalkidd Linux gets major updates much faster than windows, Also you get updates for all 3rd party software with Linux. Windows does not update your 3rd party programs and usually give late updates every 2 weeks on a tuesday. Android is not using package managers for apps and the people infected are downloading free apps from China with Malware that exploit Apache or Java on the Android.
@66THELAW Actually, it's been demonstrated that virus apps including paid ones are up on the Android Market. Some are meant to imitate popular apps and people who don't inspect the app closer or read the reviews are likely to get infected. 3rd party apps have always been up to the developer for updates. That's the way most corporations prefer to do updates. Adobe even has their own update manager for all their programs.
@Generalkidd True . I prefer desktop Linux OS's like debian and Mint because those are much safer than Android, since you can download anything you want that's signed in the package management. Android tablets and phones are good. You just need to know what you are downloading. With desktop linux all your programs get updated through the package management and software sources. Most of the updates I get are for 3rd party programs. From Firefox, VLC, Kdenlive, Rhythmbox etc..
@Generalkidd How does one cite in comments if URLs are discouraged, anyhow? GSA $ acquisitions obviously do not include Linuxֻ Also, if Office is both growing and bloating, am I missing the print bibles over 2000 pages and disuse of 95% of the code; or are they searchable audio podcasts and agency coverage these days?
@JajajxDDADAKAJAJJA Just befause theres some stuff not everyone will use doesnt mean it should be excluded. At least one person out there needs that feature. Therefore, because many open source software lack specific features, proprietary versions tend to be more favored because all the tools are right there. No need for plugins or expansions.
@Generalkidd The research antedating Vista, Plasma and Gnome3 bits was farther from and wide of a Microsoft Patent; though they've tried, too. Win7 Mobile, you know. You could almost pin it down if you looked to game toolkits, but it's kinaesthetic sensibilities in the end. Voluntary generosity is an effective money unless you want to buy short puts.
@9chaos1forever1 Supposively so. Honestly, if I had to pick a operating system for ME, it would be what I'm using now. Linux + Some Recent Windows Version = :D
If it was for the ones , like us , who know what to DO with a computer to it's maximum potential.. Linux would be my choice. Let alone most viruses are for windows, Linux has saved me countless times on clearing out those viruses.. since.. well.. Linux isn't affected as much by Windows viruses! :P
@RuneScapeDiehard4659 Linux is most lilely not effected by viruses cuz they are targeted 4 mainstream users on Windows. I am sure if the tides were turned & Linux was the primary OS it would have the same viral problems. I however have retired from most PC usage & tend to only use it for Intelligent banter like this & looking up stuff for my 360 games. I do not even use a virus protector, slows things down too much. I can deal w/most probs. & if not, Format C: ;) Ur rite bout stupid limit.
Ubuntu it's almost there. It just keeps getting better. While Bill Gates described it as an academic project, Balmer later went on to describe it as the biggest threat to Microsoft.
I tried to use Linux, I really did. The experience I got was so entirely frustrating that I'm not going to bother ever again. It's sort of like Windows or OSX, except nothing works the way a normal, reasonable person would expect, and you can't run any of your normal software or play most games. And yes, I know about wine and similar programs, and I'd use them if I were a masochist who didn't mind gaming at half the frame rate I get on Windows with the same hardware, if the game works at all.
@Mistraker Linux and Windows are obviously not for the same audience ..
Truth be told, from my experience with linux, I believe that if the games were developed for linux too(the games are made for windows, and why they don't play, not because linux has some problem, same for all kind of software) they would actually run better.
If the reasonable way for a computer to work is to plug in a game and play, then you mistake it for a gaming machine.[limit]
@Rigardoful Linux is meant to provide some other capabilities, too.
That "reasonable" people can't probably imagine.
btw, reasonable and not knowing their computer is different.
Linux allows you to customize everything, you just have to know how to.
Windows is for those who don't know computers. Since I don't mind gaming much, I can do anything better and faster on linux .. Big deal, like I'm a professional photoshop artist or something to miss such thins .. xD
@NathanGNU No, a PC is a 'personal computer' which contrasts greatly from the huge computers used in early businesses. You said 'everyone who uses a computer is using a pc', which of course is not true.
This advertisement applies Windows doesn't have theming abilities. Which is wrong. XP had, and still has, thousands of skinning abilities, Vista is catching up, and 7 is still relatively new. But it's catching up!
@Mistraker I know, but it's a lot harder to find anything you can find comfortable in on W7. So did XP when that came out. But now, 10 years later, there's literally millions of skins.
@zhoulingyu I'm sorry, but you're talking science. Bullshit that I have no use for in the area I expertise in.
What I do is photography and video. Microscope images? Scale? What the fuck is this nerd shit?
Windows productivity doesn't exceed anything. Neither does Linux, or Mac. Those are OPERATING systems. They're just the core. You don't get productive with a core. You use programs to be productive. Like Maya, Photoshop, Flash, AutoCAD.
@zhoulingyu I'm guessing you were trying to run it on some archaic system designed for [at best] Windows XP, and or not maintaining the system due to your pirated copy. I manage thousands of Windows boxes and they RARELY have blue screen issues. Those that DO have it are usually old ass servers such as G2s or the like that 2003R2 or later simply doesn't support.
No, I got Vista from OEM and Windows7 from Microsoft CD. It was genuine.
My box is HP CQ 45, which had a lot more BSoD when running Vista. Windows 7 fixed that a little bit.
Technically, Windows as a micro-kernel system should not crash due to a driver error, Monolithic-kernel system like Linux should. But ironically, Linux never crashes.
In Linux I can use 5 lines dirty but useful scripts to rename, create, manipulate unlimited amount of images, files and folders. Windows can't.
@zhoulingyu 1. When a driver calls an invalid command or access some part of the hardware it's not supposed to, or in a way it's not supposed to, it most certainly will cause a crash. Additionally, with respect to your comment about 5 line script blahblahblah, you're COMPLETELY wrong. Windows console scripting is EVERY bit as capable as the Linux shell, whether bash or otherwise. You can't do anything more in Linux shellscript that you can't do in the Windows console.
First Q: Let me remind you HP is a USA brand, which promised it is compatible with Windows, not Linux. Funny! "Shit" USA company? Further more, your PC might also be produced in China. Your argument is not valid.
Second Q: Windows do have power shell in Win7 In WinXP, we also had similar stuff. But how can I evoke a command from file browser? from keyboard short cut? and more? So don't be silly, Windows do not worth that much money, and certainly do not worth praising and worshiping.
@zhoulingyu That was one of the most poorly assembled messages I've ever seen. Just because something is branded with an American label doesn't mean it has to be designed for Windows. 2. What argument are you even TALKING about? your above comments are not even remotely related to the discussion. With regards to power shell, I assure you I can accomplish pretty much anything without it. YES, you can run programs from browser window. YES, you can use keyboard shortcuts. Try again, you fool.
incidentally WTF is an HP CQ 45!? Wait nevermind I got it. LOL aCompaq. Still, it's fine. 1. BIOS update and 2. driver update. Pretty sure you're full of shit asserting Windows had any problem with this laptop's made in China hardware compared to Linux. Most likely you had a shit ton of stuff on there, and since you're more familiar with it, you were tweaking it and customizing shit with a shit ton of shareware, etc.
@chemao1978 i'd like to see you prove the nt kernel being as fast and reliable as the unix OR linux kernel. i'd be more impressed if you could also prove that it is more efficient and useful. windows was praised for closing security holes that it shouldn't have had to begin with, and it closes them faster because it has so many more of them, making it a disproportionate comparsion. pyrok1netic is almost blindly hateful and angry to an unnecessary level but isn't wrong about anything he said.
@schmidtbag Actually, if you actually READ the security bulletin reports (as I used to be required to weekly, until promoted), you would see that number of security holes located for Windows and Linux was consistently comparable. I won't argue which kernel is faster because we all know that the linux kernel is much smaller and responsible for fewer management actions than the NT kernel. That said, the difference between the operating systems as a whole is quite comparable. But Windows... is easy
@rasmusn91 well there isn't much of a problem in that. i use linux extensively but i'll open windows exclusively for gaming. no os is perfect at everything so use them for what you need them for.
Ladies and gents, we got ourselves a windows cheerleader (@ctsincebay). Everyone go to his channel and give him hell. He has a DELL, by the way......bwahahaha......(D)oom (E)very (L)ast (L)aptop
@ctsincebay Chill man I like windows too (Dual Booting) I'm not bashing windows users, I'm just saying that linux is awesome because it can compete with windows while being almost totally free. But windows is cool because of its compatibility and easy usage. You see both have their own uses. There's no reason to bash linux. Any one who is moderately serious about programming uses linux, and anyone who wants to do video editing uses windows or a mac. Thats the way it is.
@schm147 ... no, the thing that was actually funny the first fifty times I heard someone say this... is that you are a typical "mac" user that does not know that OSX is really just closed sourced linux...but then one remembers the colloquialism "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups."
@schm147 Interestingly enough, I remember the Apple computers crashing plenty of times. I also remember using iMacs in college... holy shit those were slow as hell. They were like the top of the line ones supposedly for graphics... and yeah, they sucked like shit. Newer macs are fine, I SUPPOSE... but don't play most games, and offer NOTHING extra for that premium price (aside from a pretty box). Hey it's funny you made a joke about cars. Apple is like Lexus! Looks beautiful but is slow as hell.
@ctsincebay Don't play most games? haha you obviously know nothing about Macs. Macs can play any game. Yeah, Macs are slow as hell. That's probably why in all the Mac vs. PC boot-up times videos, the Mac wins every time. winBSODows, lol.....Vista was the biggest fail since justin bieber's birth.
@schm147 LOL, when you run the windows operating system on Apple hardware it doesn't count as a "Mac" any more. Also, you're clearly the dumbass because most of those "boot speed tests" are rigged with the apple having SSD and the PC having platter HDDs. My laptop boots in 20 seconds, and it's not even a fast one!! How's yours?
It's funny to see that no one can seem to grasp that so many million of the web servers in the world are running versions of Debian linux with Apache. Or how many database infrastructures are built on either Red Hat or SUSE linux.
@Modafuckaz Your username really fits you, asshole. If you can give me a GOOD reason, not "because it sucks" or "it cant run windoze shit" then I'll believe you. Fuckwit.
72 dislikes don't like leather (and I don't blame them)
Hi I'm Micro$oft, and I make my income by exploiting human rights (all forms!)
Hi I'm Mr Mac, and I make my income by overcharging customers for the same crap.
Hi I'm Linux, I'm gonna make my income by many hard working people I will not be paying and will make the same damned thing. And I won't sell out. Honest.
@ShroedingerWatcher ... obviously not one of the smarter cats in the experiment... regardless, experiment after experiment has shown that people do far superior jobs on things that they want to do over things that they have been coerced to do... the people that work on linux enjoy it and do it of their own free will because they enjoy it... not for a paycheck. Fail...

Linux is not user-friendly (compared to a user with 0 tech knowledge), plus most PC's come with Windows (7) installed anyway, so no one really "pays" for Windows; for most non-techies it comes pre-installed on their PC.

I can use ANY Linux distribution for free.
And then some.
IamDUFF 2 months ago 44
@IamDUFF I know C. Why can't Linux run modern video games? Maybe I can help.
32BitJunkie 1 month ago
@32BitJunkie
Ok... Linux actually CAN run modern video games, that's not the problem... (As long as you have the required hardware and drivers)
The main problem with linux and videogames is that companies don't develop games for linux, since it has no (read: little) market share... There are of course some developers working for linux (and/or windows as well), for instance, the people at frictional games (Amnesia: The dark descent, or Penumbra)...
t0m4t3 1 month ago
@t0m4t3 So how does that affect people who like video games and use linux? Is it easy to play mainstream games, or is it a massive hurdle of driver installing and hacking every time?
32BitJunkie 1 month ago
@32BitJunkie If it's a linux compatible game, it will, of course be ridiculously easy to play that game. If you want to play a windows game, you may use WINE, but it will need probably some hacking, and it will lose some (It really depends on wine version, the most modern, the better) speed.
t0m4t3 1 month ago
@IamDUFF C is kind of an older language at this point. It's best to move on to newer languages with more features such as C++, Java, or C#. I personally prefer C# but any of those three languages would be suitable for a modern operating system. I'm not saying C is useless and obsolete. It's just that if you want more developers for your platform, C# and Java are easy to learn.
Generalkidd 1 month ago
@IamDUFF and now with the lastest WINE (also free) you can play 3d windows video games
drolandcorp 1 month ago
@drolandcorp Not all of the games though. Especially not the new ones that invoke the latest DirectX API's. As far as I know, DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games are not compatible with WINE and many DX9 games have issues as well. Currently, WINE is only good for more simple games like Counter Strike. But it's useless for modern games like Gears of War, Mass Effect, Halo 2 Vista, etc.
Generalkidd 1 month ago
@Generalkidd true, i failed to consider that, but there are other programs, such as crossover that can allow even DX11 games to run, for a small fee of course.
drolandcorp 1 month ago
@drolandcorp If you're going to pay to use crossover (proprietary), doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of open source though? You might as well just use Windows which has native DX11 support with no compatibility problems at all. And from what I read on their website, CrossOver currently does not have support for DX10 or above. DX9 is a bit glitchy. Plus, not support for anything above .NET 3.0 which is necessary for many new games. If you're a gamer, you really need Windows.
Generalkidd 1 month ago
@IamDUFF As a 16 year user of Linux, I might take this moment to quote the (often quoted) Jamie Zawinski - not because I'm not clever enough to be quotable, just that he often gets there first - "Linux is free if your time is worth nothing." I now run a Mac desktop fulltime, but figured out quite some time ago that crappy second class hardware support just isn't what I want out of life. My Mac? Its literally switch on and its all automatic, because I'd rather code than configure.

@goingwithzed That JWZ quote's outdated; at least for the money shopping with MacOS feels like with each item something is cared for, sometimes effusively. true, open source always sets the trend and the others never catch up
1ma4ighter 2 months ago
@1ma4ighter The problem with open source is that it tends to lack the quality and support that proprietary software when backed by multi-billion dollar corporations have. OpenOffice is no where near as good as Microsoft Office. Businesses and schools prefer Microsoft Office over OpenOffice anyday despite the price difference.
Generalkidd 1 month ago
@Generalkidd
hey, I've been to school. . .two questions in my math paper for my last final were wrong
and those idiots put the memo in our final business paper, instead of the question paper. . .
I understand why they'd use microsoft office. . .btw: how much more do you think i know than them about software? i build software. . .they teach young children to grow up and become people who can't judge between good and bad software and ultimately don't know how computers work
1ma4ighter 1 month ago
@1ma4ighter And you're wrong about open source always setting the trend. Take Kubuntu and the KDE Plasma desktop. It's obvious that was based off of Windows Vista's Aero interface. Open source depends on people who can invest their free time in order to improve the project while proprietary software depends on how many billions of dollars are invested. Money tends to win over voluntary generosity.
Generalkidd 1 month ago
@Generalkidd hate to burst your bubble, but kde was around before even XP was marketed.
drolandcorp 1 month ago
@drolandcorp Except back then, KDE was nothing like Vista. KDE was more like Windows XP back then. About 1 year after Vista was released, KDE was upgraded with the new Plasma Desktop so it has several effects that imitate Vista's new Aero interface.
Generalkidd 1 month ago
@Generalkidd
do you know how much older than windows vista kubuntu is?
oviously not
1ma4ighter 1 month ago
@1ma4ighter It doesn't matter how much older Kubuntu is. KDE didn't support the Plasma Desktop until AFTER Vista was available. Generally, if you want something new, it'll be available as proprietary software first. And proprietary software tends to be better too. Adobe Photoshop will always be better than any open source alternative for awhile. The tools available are amazing and usually well documented. Plus, you get support from the corporation.
Generalkidd 1 month ago
@Generalkidd Adobe photoshop is bullshit compared to Krita
JajajxDDADAKAJAJJA 1 month ago
@JajajxDDADAKAJAJJA Are you serious? While I personally am not a regular user of photoshop, I do know for a fact that it *currently* provides more tools, more convenience and more support than any other photo editing software out there regardless of proprietary or open source. Likewise Microsoft Office is no doubt better than OpenOffice or iWork or any other office suite out there.
Generalkidd 1 month ago
@Generalkidd Actually no. Most people (especially governments) are moving to OpenOffice because microsoft office has broken ODT support, which is the international standard for documents.
barbariandude 1 month ago
@barbariandude However, the US government specifically still uses primarily Microsoft products such as Windows and Office. The majority of large corporations also use Microsoft products almost exclusively. And whether it's true or not that people are switching doesn't really matter. A shift of a few percentage points of market share is negligible. MS Office market share has hardly changed and continues to dominate the world.
Generalkidd 1 month ago
@Generalkidd That is actually the best part about Linux: Because the waist majority is lazy and stupid we can foresee that in the near future Linux will not be represented very great in the desktop-market. This has a big advantage: It will stay secure with almost no need to really secure your computer, while being the best and most easy to manipulate software available. And all that for free. Thank you, Microsoft.
leonavis 1 month ago
@leonavis That's not necessarily true. While Windows does have the most viruses compared to any other platform, that doesn't mean Windows is more vulnerable. Take a look at android which is having an emergin ging virus problem now. Android is based on Linux. Personally ive never had a virus while using windows. Im careful about what i download from the internet. Windows is in reality pretty secure with daily security updates. How long does it take Linux to get major updates?
Generalkidd 1 month ago
@Generalkidd Not long. And, that was my point, there are no viruses made for Linux desktops; it's not popular enough.
Android is something different, because it is quite popular.
Even if you are skilled and experienced with PCs, you cannot compile your own Windows-kernel with only that hardware supported that you use. You always have lots of programs and libraries that you would never install. That is the great thing about Linux: It is your choice, not your maintainers.
leonavis 1 month ago
@leonavis Linux and Win 'desktops' are both unpopular; so viruses are written to the common apps, with the advantage that they may work on Mac lately. This ruins the otherwise good chance that Mac Malware merely wants to change a color scheme and fix some ugly menus, add throw pillowsֻ
Cineenvenordquist 4 weeks ago
@Generalkidd Linux gets major updates much faster than windows, Also you get updates for all 3rd party software with Linux. Windows does not update your 3rd party programs and usually give late updates every 2 weeks on a tuesday. Android is not using package managers for apps and the people infected are downloading free apps from China with Malware that exploit Apache or Java on the Android.
66THELAW 1 month ago
@66THELAW Actually, it's been demonstrated that virus apps including paid ones are up on the Android Market. Some are meant to imitate popular apps and people who don't inspect the app closer or read the reviews are likely to get infected. 3rd party apps have always been up to the developer for updates. That's the way most corporations prefer to do updates. Adobe even has their own update manager for all their programs.
Generalkidd 1 month ago
@Generalkidd True . I prefer desktop Linux OS's like debian and Mint because those are much safer than Android, since you can download anything you want that's signed in the package management. Android tablets and phones are good. You just need to know what you are downloading. With desktop linux all your programs get updated through the package management and software sources. Most of the updates I get are for 3rd party programs. From Firefox, VLC, Kdenlive, Rhythmbox etc..
66THELAW 1 month ago
@Generalkidd How does one cite in comments if URLs are discouraged, anyhow? GSA $ acquisitions obviously do not include Linuxֻ Also, if Office is both growing and bloating, am I missing the print bibles over 2000 pages and disuse of 95% of the code; or are they searchable audio podcasts and agency coverage these days?
Cineenvenordquist 4 weeks ago
@Generalkidd it dont provides more tools
it just provides shits that you never will use
JajajxDDADAKAJAJJA 1 month ago
@JajajxDDADAKAJAJJA Just befause theres some stuff not everyone will use doesnt mean it should be excluded. At least one person out there needs that feature. Therefore, because many open source software lack specific features, proprietary versions tend to be more favored because all the tools are right there. No need for plugins or expansions.
Generalkidd 1 month ago
@Generalkidd The research antedating Vista, Plasma and Gnome3 bits was farther from and wide of a Microsoft Patent; though they've tried, too. Win7 Mobile, you know. You could almost pin it down if you looked to game toolkits, but it's kinaesthetic sensibilities in the end. Voluntary generosity is an effective money unless you want to buy short puts.

Vista isn't as good at multitasking as Ubuntu.
Cause Ubuntu doesn't hog resources.

Cause Vista eventually dies for some reason.

Mistraker 3 months ago
@Mistraker Linux and Windows are obviously not for the same audience ..
Truth be told, from my experience with linux, I believe that if the games were developed for linux too(the games are made for windows, and why they don't play, not because linux has some problem, same for all kind of software) they would actually run better.
If the reasonable way for a computer to work is to plug in a game and play, then you mistake it for a gaming machine.[limit]

@Rigardoful Linux is meant to provide some other capabilities, too.
That "reasonable" people can't probably imagine.

Windows can't.
zhoulingyu 3 months ago

But how can I evoke a command from file browser? from keyboard short cut? and more? So don't be silly, Windows do not worth that much money, and certainly do not worth praising and worshiping.
zhoulingyu 3 months ago
@zhoulingyu That was one of the most poorly assembled messages I've ever seen. Just because something is branded with an American label doesn't mean it has to be designed for Windows. 2. What argument are you even TALKING about? your above comments are not even remotely related to the discussion. With regards to power shell, I assure you I can accomplish pretty much anything without it. YES, you can run programs from browser window. YES, you can use keyboard shortcuts. Try again, you fool.
chemao1978 3 months ago
incidentally WTF is an HP CQ 45!? Wait nevermind I got it. LOL aCompaq. Still, it's fine. 1. BIOS update and 2. driver update. Pretty sure you're full of shit asserting Windows had any problem with this laptop's made in China hardware compared to Linux. Most likely you had a shit ton of stuff on there, and since you're more familiar with it, you were tweaking it and customizing shit with a shit ton of shareware, etc.
chemao1978 3 months ago
@chemao1978 i'd like to see you prove the nt kernel being as fast and reliable as the unix OR linux kernel. i'd be more impressed if you could also prove that it is more efficient and useful. windows was praised for closing security holes that it shouldn't have had to begin with, and it closes them faster because it has so many more of them, making it a disproportionate comparsion. pyrok1netic is almost blindly hateful and angry to an unnecessary level but isn't wrong about anything he said.
schmidtbag 3 months ago
@schmidtbag Actually, if you actually READ the security bulletin reports (as I used to be required to weekly, until promoted), you would see that number of security holes located for Windows and Linux was consistently comparable. I won't argue which kernel is faster because we all know that the linux kernel is much smaller and responsible for fewer management actions than the NT kernel. That said, the difference between the operating systems as a whole is quite comparable. But Windows... is easy
