Hey Squirrel I just payed for my buggy but when I break it in I cant see what tep it is cus I dont have a tep gauge would a spit \ water test be ok or is there a other way to see if the tep is ok?
@Squirrelod well I would love to get one but I live in england right now could always get one on ebay but kinda well maybe have to wait in tell next month to get it so maybe spit test :/ will have to do?
I TRIED TO BREAK IN MY TMAXX 3.3 BUT THE GLO PLUG JUST FIZZED UP NITRO THEN I CLEARED IT OUT I HAD TO PUT THE SPARE GLO PLUG IN IT STARTED UP, BUT IS IT BAD IF ITS LIKE 55* DEGREES OUT SIDE?
@evanzabarsky20 You dont have to have one. I use a Ryobi sensor and I have a hobby Duratraxx as well. They help,. But, once you know how to tune, see the audible and visual signs, then you will rarely use them.
@alexa5a Take the cooling head off and move the piston down by moving the flywheel. When it is at the lowest point of the swing then you will see it. Mark that on the flywheel so that you know where it is without removing the head.
I will add this to ask squirrel and show you on that video coming up.
I did my break in on my XST 24.7 and now it idles for about 5 or 6 seconds and then dies. What do I do to get it to run? I'm new to this hobby and I bought a Jato 3.3 and this XST. The Jato was already broke in and already had a lot of upgrades as far as aluminum parts and the Vantage exhaust.
@ReturnScroll Its your engine and you can do what you want with it. However, every engine needs a break in to conform the sleeve with the piston. Its a custom fit that only break in allows. No engine is above that. If you want your engine to last longer then a break in is done.
I have a question. How do I get my piston to dead bottom centre. I got a rtr kit with the engine already on. From looking down I can see the piston is at the top. I have tried using the pull start to manipulate it so It falls to the bottom. But it merely falls and rises back up. The flywheel is impossible to move with fingers. Any tips would be much appreciated.
Remove the head and look down at the piston. Move the flywheel so that the piston as the bottom part of the piston swing. Once there, take something sharp and scratch your flywheel so that you know that is BDC. BDC will always be in the same place.
Another area to look is the exhaust port. When it is flush with the exhaust then it is at, or near, BDC.
What do you define "reaaaaaaaallly" hot as? Is your LSN needle set right? Do you have binding in any of the driveline. Are you running on the ground or suspended?
250 f +. i had to cut it off when it got to that temp so i wouldnt damage the sleeve. i am running suspended with the wheels on. i just though about setting the LSN, so i will try that out...
Running suspended will increase motor temps. You could have an air leak. I have a video on how to determine if you do on the tank and engine. You should tune HSN first and then LSN. Before touching the needles you should determine stock needle locations so that you can return them.

Ive seen all Ur vids and i fell that it could have been the fuel. i got new fuel, NO CHANGE! plz help. i want to be able to accelerate from 0 to 55 without the engine cutting out or bogging down.
that happens with nearly EVERY RC Car, if you idle for too long you build up more fuel... so when u floor it it will just douse your plug... Best way to do this is either run fairly lean settings, or better yet keep the glow plug on the car... hold it in the air.. Floor it so you burn the excess (with the glow heater on). Once you do this, remove the plug and your good to go..
Just dont idle for 2 long, even pro racers will constantly rev there engine during count downs.
I can almost garuntee your idle is set to high and to compensate for it you have a very rich low end. What you should do.
-Start your car and get it up to temp.
-Slowly start to lean out your low speed needle. At the same time lower your idle via the idle screw on the engine. (screw the screw outward to lower the idle)
-Do this slowly and turn the needles about 2 hours at a time.
i want to do ur method but i cand because i dont have the room to go fast can i put my car on a block of wood to breake it inwerte the wheels arent touching the ground at all?
You are a life saver! Feel like helping me out with a tough one even HPI cant answer? I just got a Savage 4.6 and did the bench break-in for a few tanks. Is the engine still not broken in enough to roll or is it fried? Thanks.
helloo, i just bought an XTM XT2, ii ran it on optifuel 16 for the break in process, and after a litre of fuel it was ready. i then went to a shop to buy more fuel, thinkin i was buying more optifuel 16, but i bought byron & co race fuel, I only noticed this once ide filled my tank. Click on my name, then find the playlist tab at the top, and find the play list on RC setup. Watch vid 18 (I think that is the one) on throttle set up. Your issue is that your default throttle or idle screw setting is applying throttle. The video will help you solve it.
I say it that way as my experience could be different for someone else. My opinion is that I love the .28 and the .27 that it replaced. It also varies on skill level, break in, etc. Its a opinionated question with a opinion comment.
I see. Yet Piccos are still pretty expensive. I guess I will go with the O.S. as I have heard alot of good things about them. What about Nova's? Their new Plus 21-4. It seems like a great engine. So how amny gallons do you have on your Picco? Have you had to replace the bearings yet?
Yeah Ive mixed opinions about those V-specs, they are good and the parts are easily available. I'd much rather have an Italian motor though. Oh well, I guess a v-spec and a Dynamite 086 would kick some ass... What other engines do yo run besides that Picco?
Well what would you say about Piccos in general? I mean I hear they have alot of carb problems and such.. I really like the specs on the P7 Evo 3, but from what I hear it isn't all that good.
What would you say is the best .21 motor for racing? A picco, Sirio, OS, etc?
hi SQUIRRELOD i agrre with u, any break in method is fine, i just bought a new S. XL 5.9, what do u think about this manual brake in method and waht do u recomend me? please answ, i wanna run
Hi Squirrel, just bought a kyosho inferno mp7.5, sat infront of my pc and watched your videos, all of them, thank u for being such a good sportsman and sharing your wizdom with the rest of the world, so on behalf of all you watchers, thanx. Weven watch and listen to u here in Belgium, keep up the good work.
On your method you say around tank 2 you are working to lean the engine. Are you turning the needle screws at this point? If so which needle and how much? If not how are you leaning the engine? Thanks
hello i have watched all of your videos and i have learned alot from them so thank you for your videos but after you have done the traxxas method like i am tomorow after i have done it all is it defenetly broken into please answer i maybe breaking into day or tomorow great videos thanks
i bought a dna racing buggy and i have done the brake in methods and such and the glowstick dies after 1 start but after i get it started i pull the gas a little bit and it stalls any ideas please help, its a brand new car and i would love to have it moving.
i got a dna a few years ago and i couldnt even break mine in it kept dying but the few times i was able to kepp it going as long as the tune was a little rich it would run decent ffor a few minutes
im breaking in my new rebuilt engine and its getting up to 262 degrees and i have my HSN set to 2 3/4 turns out from fully closed so what do i do to get the heat down to 200 or 210
Richen the HSN, ensure you have a hole in the shell for cooling, ensure that you have no air leaks in the engine, ensure that you are geared correctly, ensure that the sleeve was installed correctly as with the rest of the engine.
Yes, go to traxxas website, follow there procedure, its almost the break-in bible of nitro engines. Break-in the engine for a few tanks and do not forget to put the piston at BDC) Bottom Dead Center. Do remember running your engine on 30-40 degree weather is hard to tell the engine temps, hear how the engine accelerates and always have blue smoke out of the exhaust, at least during break-in. Good videos.
is it really necessary to break in the engine to the fact that you would go half throttle for 2 seconds. is this for all engines or is it ok not to do this with engines that are already built into the car (pre-installed)
hey i was looking at some fuel on the internet becuase i'm gonna get my first nitro-rc car and i found some fuel that was special for break ins, do you think i should buy it??
i got my first rc when i was 14 about 3 months ago i was working in the summer droped in a new engine an O.S .21 RG-X verry nice engine much much better than the stock gxr 28 from the inferno us sports. ive always wanted one when i finnally got mine it was the happiest day of my life. :)
I started out with nothing. I joined the military, got out after 9 years, and I have a college education thanks to my years in service. I worked my ass off and everything that I have anyone can have. Just work for it ;)
Well, you are 13. Im a little bit older. Give it some time ;)
Just do good things and work hard. I work 50 hours a week, 2 weeks left for my 4 year, I run a forum, and I am a editor for a magazine. Its all work and it all pays off =)
nice work dude,i'm a mechanic who has built and raced big cars and have been offered the engine and tune on a sprintcar...850hp on methanol and glow is a whole different game.good stuff mate..you've helped me and my glow engine ...cheers.
i have just bought a brand new hyper 21 and i took the glow plug out and turned the engine over and the piston and sleeve get really stiff at the top can you help me?.
Can you quickly run over what i should be doing when using your breal in method eg
Tank 1 - 1/4 throtle for 2 secs then let it slow down and repeat making sure the temp doesn't go over 200 (I tried searching your forum for a written explaniation but couldnt find one)
what temp should it be hitting on the final tank when you get up to the full throtle runs
If you are slowly tuning as you go, like I usually do, then it will be the close to the temp for your application. For example, MTs should be between 23o to 250 so you would want it not to exceed that temperature by the end of tank 5 for a quick tuning tank 6.
hey i was thinking on geting a micro-t and geting all the hop ups like shocks and brushless and making it a buggy do u think it would be a waist to do it on a mirco or should i get like a 1/18 scale buggy...i want something good for home and the track
always a pleaure to watch your videos.i have a xray 808,novarossi 367 plus 2 motor,futaba 9351 and 9452 servo,futaba 3pk 2.4 and jp03 pipe.loooooooooooot of money,but they worth it..
It really depends on the buggy or truck you want to get. A Ofna or losi buggy are alot of fun and durable. Can obtain great speeds as well. Trucks are not as fast or nimble as they are higher off the ground. They can go over more terrain. There are also stadium trucks (ST) and Monster Trucks (MT) where the mt has more clearance.
Im a buggy guy. But, if you are torn, get a truggy which is a combination of the two.
Understood on not wanting to spend alot of cash. But, do you want to spend less cash now to have a RC car that will break constantly and have to custom order very expensive parts OR do you want to pay a little more, have a reliable kit that can take a beating, and pay less for parts?
Stay away from Exceed. Buy HPI, Ofna, Losi, AE, Traxxas. You will have the best experience and pay less later on with them.
if u dont want to spend a lot of money and get a reliable truck(dont no that much about buggys ask squirrel) but i suggest get a traxxas t-maxx 2.5 or e-maxx if u want electric
Fantastic vids and as a noob I thank you for taking the time to run through this process..everyone has a different opinion on how to break in so when I got my rtr(yes I know, its an rtr so shoot me)RC8, I went by their book specs..one thing I did notice on this vid is that at 5:10 you stated if temp is above 200 to richen by going clockwise..oops! Just to let you know so people dont start leaning and temp goes up and then blamo!
Id do the new school or one of the other ones in the video. The WOT method looked like idling the engine at a faster rpm than idle to me. Running the car on blocks (with no ground resistance)is actually not a good thing (though it looks like he backs off to not engage the clutch). But, again, with nothing describing it other than a 30 second clip to go off of...
I run a NovaRossi .12 on my RC10GT, and far as I remember even NovaRossi says to cycle it. Funny squirrel I need a piston/sleeve (after 1yr) and its 130.00 , thats killing me but i but it.
Oh I agree! They are awesome engines but the cost is staggering. Nova actually recommends heat cycling as well per their website.
I had a Nova Rossi and would have another happily. But, my straw was on a Sirio .27 where the replacement sleeves and piston was 150 or so and that is when I started to look at the 130 to $200 engines and they perform well as well. STS engines are like 130 to 140 and kick ass as do the LRPs, piccos, etc. The most I will pay is for a OS 30.
Just for Info, Idling a few tanks will help to smooth out any high spots in the chrome plating of the sleeve. I run only RB novarossi and Werks Italian race engines and have been running nitro for many years. I would NEVER heat cycle a highly pinched race engine with out 2-3 tanks idling at about 180 degrees... then go and do a normal heat cycle break in. maybe hes just not used to REAL highly pinched engines. like that LRP (name brand lab

hey, i have a Hobao Hyper 7 4.6 Mach 28 , and i was just wondering if this break in procedure sounds ok
tank 1 : tapping the throttle driving slowly and idoling
tank2 : increased speed
tank 3 : increasing speed to half tank on a brick.
Tank:4 : Half throttle on ground
Tank 5 : short bursts of full throttle?

How many RC cars do you have ??
Naxxy28 2 years ago
lol, just read all the comments and people have been asking "how good is the picco?" and "how much luck have had with your engines?"
but all you reply is
"i love my picco"
popcornreviews 2 years ago
I say it that way as my experience could be different for someone else. My opinion is that I love the .28 and the .27 that it replaced. It also varies on skill level, break in, etc. Its a opinionated question with a opinion comment.

I love my picco
popcornreviews 2 years ago
No man.... I reallly "love" my picco. I just never could figure out why they called it an "exhaust port" when it is really an input...
Squirrelod 2 years ago
I see. Yet Piccos are still pretty expensive. I guess I will go with the O.S. as I have heard alot of good things about them. What about Nova's? Their new Plus 21-4. It seems like a great engine. So how amny gallons do you have on your Picco? Have you had to replace the bearings yet?
5Toesss 3 years ago
Yeah Ive mixed opinions about those V-specs, they are good and the parts are easily available. I'd much rather have an Italian motor though. Oh well, I guess a v-spec and a Dynamite 086 would kick some ass... What other engines do yo run besides that Picco?
5Toesss 3 years ago
I gave up the expensive Italian engines years ago. I run Picco, OS, STS, LRP, etc.
Squirrelod 3 years ago
Well what would you say about Piccos in general? I mean I hear they have alot of carb problems and such.. I really like the specs on the P7 Evo 3, but from what I hear it isn't all that good.
What would you say is the best .21 motor for racing? A picco, Sirio, OS, etc?
5Toesss 3 years ago
I love my picco. For .21 I like the Vspec.
Squirrelod 3 years ago
WAit are you having good luck with your picco? Im between the Picco P7, Sirio EVO IV, a Nova and that O.s. V-spec.
5Toesss 3 years ago
I love my picco.
Squirrelod 3 years ago
Nice, my sirio and an 053 Dynamite is gonna ROCK!
5Toesss 3 years ago
Is that a Picco P7 engine?
Or what? Im getting a new Sirio Kanai EVO IV soon :)

Its a .28

On your method you say around tank 2 you are working to lean the engine. Are you turning the needle screws at this point? If so which needle and how much? If not how are you leaning the engine? Thanks

how do you check your temperututre and if you need something where do you get it from
alistoke2k7 3 years ago
You need a temp gauge. You can buy that from a hobby store or a automotive store.

im breaking in my new rebuilt engine and its getting up to 262 degrees and i have my HSN set to 2 3/4 turns out from fully closed so what do i do to get the heat down to 200 or 210
jrocks420 3 years ago

Good videos.
psiturbo 3 years ago
is it really necessary to break in the engine to the fact that you would go half throttle for 2 seconds. is this for all engines or is it ok not to do this with engines that are already built into the car (pre-installed)
ryan000s 3 years ago
This is for all engines and it improves the life span on your engine. It is highly encouraged.
If this break in method is not for you then realize that I proposed 3 methods. Pick and choose.
Squirrelod 3 years ago
ok thx alot
lulu1394 3 years ago
hey i was looking at some fuel on the internet becuase i'm gonna get my first nitro-rc car and i found some fuel that was special for break ins, do you think i should buy it??
lulu1394 3 years ago
Buy regular fuel. Break in fuel is not needed.

do 1/16 scale go fast, cuz im gonna get 1 soon and i can get 1/10 or 1/16 wich 1 shuld i get
dirtynate13 3 years ago
I prefer size when it comes to RC. Personal preference.
They go decently fast. you can always get a better pipe, engine, increase the teeth on the CB, and lower the teeth on the spur

Squirrelod 3 years ago
im very new to nitro cars and dont uderstand y u cant start up and drive?
duckpk10 3 years ago
Hi,
Can you quickly run over what i should be doing when using your breal in method eg
Tank 1 - 1/4 throtle for 2 secs then let it slow down and repeat making sure the temp doesn't go over 200 (I tried searching your forum for a written explaniation but couldnt find one)
what temp should it be hitting on the final tank when you get up to the full throtle runs
vieri32 3 years ago
If you are slowly tuning as you go, like I usually do, then it will be the close to the temp for your application. For example, MTs should be between 23o to 250 so you would want it not to exceed that temperature by the end of tank 5 for a quick tuning tank 6.

aglaia1952 3 years ago
squirrel, what vehicle would you refer for me to get, a buggy or a truck? im new to rc's
sesoccerstar09 3 years ago
It really depends on the buggy or truck you want to get. A Ofna or losi buggy are alot of fun and durable. Can obtain great speeds as well. Trucks are not as fast or nimble as they are higher off the ground. They can go over more terrain. There are also stadium trucks (ST) and Monster Trucks (MT) where the mt has more clearance.
Im a buggy guy. But, if you are torn, get a truggy which is a combination of the two.
Squirrelod 3 years ago
thanks, that helped...the only thing is im not looking to spend alot of money on my first car...what do you know about the brand exceed?
sesoccerstar09 3 years ago
Understood on not wanting to spend alot of cash. But, do you want to spend less cash now to have a RC car that will break constantly and have to custom order very expensive parts OR do you want to pay a little more, have a reliable kit that can take a beating, and pay less for parts?
Stay away from Exceed. Buy HPI, Ofna, Losi, AE, Traxxas. You will have the best experience and pay less later on with them.
Squirrelod 3 years ago
if u dont want to spend a lot of money and get a reliable truck(dont no that much about buggys ask squirrel) but i suggest get a traxxas t-maxx 2.5 or e-maxx if u want electric
netgear132 3 years ago
Fantastic vids and as a noob I thank you for taking the time to run through this process..everyone has a different opinion on how to break in so when I got my rtr(yes I know, its an rtr so shoot me)RC8, I went by their book specs..one thing I did notice on this vid is that at 5:10 you stated if temp is above 200 to richen by going clockwise..oops! Just to let you know so people dont start leaning and temp goes up and then blamo!
onlyrotary1989 3 years ago
argh! well, it happens! I dont get nervous on the vids but it is a rush to get 20 minutes worth of info crammed into 10. Good call though.
I have a rtr 8ight with pro options. Either buggy is a sweet kit!
Welcome to the hobby! It is a great one if you do it right! :)
Squirrelod 3 years ago
Id do the new school or one of the other ones in the video. The WOT method looked like idling the engine at a faster rpm than idle to me. Running the car on blocks (with no ground resistance)is actually not a good thing (though it looks like he backs off to not engage the clutch). But, again, with nothing describing it other than a 30 second clip to go off of...
Squirrelod 3 years ago
I run a NovaRossi .12 on my RC10GT, and far as I remember even NovaRossi says to cycle it. Funny squirrel I need a piston/sleeve (after 1yr) and its 130.00 , thats killing me but i but it.
Techcaveman1 3 years ago
Squirrelod 3 years ago
Just for Info, Idling a few tanks will help to smooth out any high spots in the chrome plating of the sleeve. I run only RB novarossi and Werks Italian race engines and have been running nitro for many years. I would NEVER heat cycle a highly pinched race engine with out 2-3 tanks idling at about 180 degrees... then go and do a normal heat cycle break in. maybe hes just not used to REAL highly pinched engines. like that LRP (name brand lab
