Sitting in a Montmartre hotel on Rue Caulaincourt, the car passes the building my hotel is now just before the Montmartre cemetary. Its 1AM, and Im thinking to myself why would anyone want leave this beautiful city, its a fairy tale. Going to take a walk to Basilica Sacré Cœur now to enjoy the view of the city at night. I love this city!
This video is great until you read more about how it was made. Still a classic of course. But there are some parts where the car is definitely not going as fast as it should have been given the gear and engine revs.
@TheChosenOne360 the Wikipedia article, which all the "authorities" on here appear to be referencing, is vague and where it is not outright incorrect, is unsubstantiated. This film is a 36 year old classic. It has influenced thousands of other films at a minimum. If you're not someone who already shoots motion footage, get down to a decent library and read a book about it ... there are plenty.
The car is a 4-door Mercedes (director's own) and at times it reached 200 km/h according to Lelouche himself (see 2006 interview). The dubbing from the Ferrari engine is beautifully done and adds to the drama. The short film is all about passion (see exquisite blonde dawning from the stairs) and could never have been done in our heavily controlled "nanny-era". What a relief that a) it was made and b) it was safe!
Can you imagine, on how many people's nerves he much have got with his motor-noise? Pity, he wasn't stopped and fined by the police! Besides: In this grey morning light Paris looks outright ugly, even Montmartre. How childish!
I found it interesting at first but after a while found it disturbing with the recklessness of going through red lights and watching people run out of his way. Then it became boring as it stretched on. I switched the sound off after a few minutes as it became cliché.
Why this "what car was it" debate keeps going on when everything about it is written on the comments and why people keep telling me what I've already said is beyond me.
@rms216 only the sound is a Ferrari. It could have been a vegetable wagon for all the difference it would have made. LeLouche chose to use his Mercedes. I doubt it was for the suspension, that would have been too dumb. He probably used it because it was roomy, quiet, easy to see, and respectable enough so people wouldn't be too surprised when he went the wrong way down a one way street. In other words, the right equipment. The object is only to seem daring. Just conjecture.
@notwhitney Im fully aware of that, i forgot to throw in that little tidbit of information, he drove the route again in a Ferrari and dubbed the sound over the original footage recorded in the Mercedes, i believe...
@CalabreseMPC Mate, it's not that hard to strap a camera to an RC car and add sound effects - i'll stick with driving my car on a sanctioned road and getting real footage.. ;]
Claude Lelouch was arrested after his 1976 film, C'était un rendez-vous, purportedly featuring a Ferrari 275 being illegally driven at high speed through the streets of Paris, was first shown publicly.[citation needed] Recent claims made by the director himself, however, suggest he drove his own Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 in the film and dubbed the sound effects of a Ferrari 275GTB to achieve the V12 sound effect
@TheLichy1 Yeah, the only other possible explanation is that he recorded the image on his Mercedes and then recorded the sound of a different car. Which is impossibly high tech shit that no human would ever imagine., so it makes much more sense to declare that the 5 speeds that we're hearing are really three and that this is a V12 sounding V8.
@VegetativeHorse I have to agree, it's no lazy V12 for cruising about and I've never heard an automatic downshift like that, especially on a 1970s Mercedes!
@VegetativeHorse He recorded this on one car, I think it was a Mercedes but can't remember which. But the sounds IS from a Ferrari 275 GTB. You can hear the sound is adapted. Some gear shifts don't quite sync to the car's nose diving or lifting, and when he's redlining you can hear the loop.
@solracaraca Since the other possible explanation was the only one that made any sense, I must have been sarcastic. Now I wish people would stop arguing about what car it was because they wouldn't bother to read the comments. Thanks for the video anyway.
@bohemianracer Why on earth is this debate here? In the making of video LeLouch says that he shot it with the benz because it needed to have a smooth shot and the mercedes had a hydraulic suspension, but then went through and recorded the sound on a ferrari so a viewer could experience the feeling of power and gearshifts audibly.
@khurley424 LeLouche said a lot of things. He was wrong about the suspension. It makes the image cloudier because it micro-vibrates the camera body. He's said many things over the years including the claim that he was going 280+ kmh. This just isn't so. He could have been going 40 mph or 80 mph. No one could know. Obviously at times he's going less than 20 mph. All he has to do is move faster than the nearest moving reference point to appear fast. Watching the film, you'll never tell
@notwhitney It's quite easy to calculate the time required to cross a certain known distance. I race cars and am quite used to doing this. I think his top speed is around 140-150 kph. It's illogical to assume that he lied about why he chose the merc, even if he was wrong. Which he wasn't, hydropneumatic suspension is indeed very suitable for this kind of work. People still choose old citroens as camera cars for this reason, just go to a horse racing track and you'll probably see one.
@chairsoft101 I think he just wanted to see if it could be done, and luckily for us he managed to do it! I can't imagine doing this anywhere today, let alone Paris! :)
Cool vid, but the sound track doesnt match the speed... I dont know how many here ever drove a car at full throttle, but the camera clearly shows a much lower speed... other, the tire noise is way too late.
@lgomgf I think (crude calculation here) that the car must be running around 150 km max, while a 275 GTB would hit the rev limit around 250. The sound makes if feel faster, but still it's a fast (and reckless) ride anyway :-) I think that the film is flawed due to dubbed soundtrack (not too badly made imo) but it's understandable, asthe Merc's hydropneumatic suspension made it a good camera car but must have sounded quite dull). Still a nice film with an appeal even for those who aren't car nuts
@VegetativeHorse you're just quoting what everyone has known and written for over 30 years about this film. You know very little about shooting from a moving vehicle or developing the impression of speed. The Ferrari, had it been used, would have made a similarly stable picture. Likely better, since auto suspension actually adds vibration to the camera body. Sssshhh, such a secret!
@VegetativeHorse Lelouch said he was going over 200 on some long straights, which the car is definitely capable of, still, I don't know if we can believe him^^
But if you divide distance/time, you come up with an *average* speed of about 80 km/h over the whole journey, which is still quite impressive considering the sharp turns and narrow streets later on in the video. What's more impressive though is the number of red lights he ran without slowing down even a bit.
I'm thinking he replayed the film on a screen in front of the car, (I'm assuming he was using his personal Ferrari 275 GTB) that was on a dyno to record the engine sounds and dubbed the squealing tires later. You can hear a Ferrari on a dyno here: watch?v=DOQFKgvA9AU
@rdboy10 No reason to doubt that as it sounds exactly like a 275 GTB. I was thinking about how he may have done it and reached the same conclusion. Maybe he just raised the car as it sounds like it revs quite quickly. Quite a complicated job to match it that well though. Also, not that it wasn't sick to drive through Paris like that, but I get the impression that on the soundtrack, he simulates braking later and stepping on the throttle earlier.
@TheALNURO1 Sounds like a missed gear change, like it jammed for a second. It's probably simulated since it is known that Lelouch drove a 6.9, V8, Mercedes-Benz 450SEL on this film, but he dubbed the sound of what is clearly a V12 engine instead.
Lelouch strapped a camera to the bumper of a Mercedes-Benz and started on a 9-minute wild ride on the streets of Paris at 5:00 in the morning. He dodged traffic, drove on the sidewalk, whisked around the Arc de Triomphe and went against one-way traffic all at speeds up to 140 miles per hour (225.3 kmh). He never stopped the car during the entire ride and treated everything in his path as an object to avoid. After almost 10 minutes of high-speed, terrifying driving,
(continued) Lelouch parks his car at the Sacré-Coeur Basilica just as a woman ran up the stairs to meet him for a date. Lelouch opened his film to the public, and was arrested after the first showing for endangering the citizens of Paris during his reckless driving stunt.
Sitting in a Montmartre hotel on Rue Caulaincourt, the car passes the building my hotel is now just before the Montmartre cemetary.
