  • C'est très beau et si loin de nos bruits occidentaux..

  • Utsukushii!!!

  • Beautiful sentient and meaningful. But most in the west the people don't understand such beauty!

  • how on earth do they keep their knees bent like that??? it looks so painful...

  • @WolframvonBielefeld9 probably not when you're used to it...I take martial arts, the first few times the horse stance was incredibly painful and now i dont feel it at all....

  • i wish youtube had japanese fan dance steps because i would like to learn this!! except this video dosent help munch iver tried google and ask.com a anyone know how i can learn this besides going to a dance school?

  • Insanely soothing, incriminatingly peaceful, majestic and buoyant in beauty.

  • How utterly beautiful

  • Sayuri??!! JK lol

  • I love the girl kimono it so pretty

  • I want to know song's name of this Japanese Fan Dance.

    Please >^<

  • awesome great job

  • Mizuage was practised before WW2, but when the geisha-districts re-opened, mizuage was no longer practised. Why are there so many people who does NOT know that geisha/geiko are not prostitutes???? O.O It's too common that a person thinks so!!

  • One of Japan's greatest cultural aspects? Young girls were often forced to become Geisha's and though, yes they learned music, and dance, but it wasn't through freedom to pursue their passion, it was to please and tease men. They are like birds with clipped wings. One does not have to have sex to prostitute. Prostitution is using talents for an unworthy cause. If you consider giving up your life in the pursuit of man pleasing worthy, then it's not - but to me that's questionable.

  • @MissBettieS Well not necessarily. Becoming a Geisha means gaining respects in the society, which would be a dream occupation for girls who often had to be a "business tool" for their family and women could not gain respect in society otherwise. Also, the number of girls "forced" to become geisha are not as many as you think... and it is zero in modern days. It's like Pop idols today... and they're definitely less slutty than, like, Western singers, some of them forced by their parents for sure.

  • @seikatake88 I think 'forced' is relative to ones situation, and often having to choose what is the lesser of two evils, and in the case of original Geishas that was the case. The naive young girls may have seen it as glamorous but their lives ended frequently by their own hand. I can't find any beauty in a woman beingtrained and formed like a bonsai tree- as for being "slutty" an arbitrary sexist term, I think subjegation is the immorality. We'll agree to disagree.

  • @MissBettieS Take a larger perspective, even the "men" they had to please were set in a larger social system, in which the Shogun tried to maintain his authority by diminishing other landlord's economic power. Thus the famous Yoshiwara district was built for people to waste money for prostitudes... And eventually Yoshiwara nurtured most of Japanese arts at time. It's undeniably the part of Japanese history, and I would value more how Japan preserved it instead of hypocritically denying it.

  • @seikatake88

I appreciate what you said about Japan preserving it instead of hiding it, and I do agree with what you say, but my only real point is a personal one. I can't find it beautiful or culturally beautiful even putting into the context of the times. Also I didn't mean to order you to "agree to disagree" I forgot to put the "have to" in there. Thanks for the discussion (really) it's nice to have a response instead of insult slinging. I find that rare on youtube.

  • A dancing flower she is!

  • what a lovely dancer. Do you know which school this would be?

  • I love enka I could listen to it all day and wat a beautiful dance I love japan

  • @Arachnah Also Memoirs was a combination of stories from various geisha. according to the author that is

  • What is this song?

  • @johnnytangghostdog please do not say things like that about Japan, its culture and its people, as it is disrespectful, rude, and racist. Keep those kinds of comments to yourself.

  • What a lovely dance...

  • lmao only old people are there

  • Way to show us your dance accent!

you should check out our dance accent channel!

Let us know what you think of our dance accent.

  • @Arachnah i agree, people think that there just prostitutes but there not there keeps of tradition, now if people wanted to see a prostitute they could have gone to the red light district

  • @Arachnah In defense of the film, Its important to remember that memoirs of a Geisha wasn't suppose to be a documentary, it was suppose to be a story. On top of that, it was a story meant for western eyes. Many things in the movie were exaggerated and changed to enhance the story and to bring you into what the characters are feeling. That is just how film is; entertainment, not education. However, it is unfortunate, what happened with Mineko Iwasaki. irresponsible on the authors part. >:(

  • One day you will marry a Japanese girl.

  • Actually I was learning a dance for this song, but it's totally different! Anyway, although I don't think it's a GREAT dance performance, I think she does pretty well still!! I know how hard it is to learn, and relaxing your movement and making it more natural yet still precise, is harder than one might think haha.

  • BEAUTIFULL AWESOME AMAZING PEOPLE !!!!!!

  • sorry guys but she is far from being a good dancer when she uses one hand the other plays in stead of being still

she may know the katas but she lacks focus and precision

and by the way memoirs of a geisha is just a comedy here in japan we all laughed at it

it may flatters your quest for exotic japaneseness but really this is everything but geishalike

  • sorry guys but she is far from being a good dancer when she uses one hand the other plays in stead of being still

she may know the katas but she lacks focus and precision

  • Our group should have some fan dance or some other similar thing as a "filler" between drum numbers... it would add to our repertoire. Unfortunately, the only member of our group who would have any interest in such a thing has enough on her plate as it is right now.

  • last night i saw the movie " memories of a geisha " ............... loved the movie and come to know about them . the r so talented and beautiful of course :) just love japanese culture .... from samurai , ninja to geisha..... just awesome :)

  • @Musiclover181994 if you want to meet real geishas, forget Memoirs of a Geisha, is just a lie about the world of Karyukai.

(sorry if you can´t understand, but I´m from Chile)

  • Oh my gosh her fans were hypnotic. At some points I couldn't follow how she did them

  • i love japan

  • Japan is the master of taking something that seems so simple and stark and turn it into a beautiful expression of art and movement. The wood prints, flower arranging, tea ceremonies, dancing, so many other classic Japanese traditions are always so precise and well executed that it turns something simple into something extraordinary. I love Japan.

  • I think Japanese Dancing is amazing. It looks so cool, it's almost intriguing.

  • I recently bought a kimono at an anime convention and craft center that was traditionally made in japan and was shipped over. I do believe that this woman is the original owner of my kinono, for it looks identical :)

  • Well, she sure does have technique, but from what I've already seen, Japanese dances have an obvious lack of emotions, which is compensated by technique. So I guess it's alright.

They look more like external martial arts forms (kata, poomse and so on) to me than a way to express any kind of feeling, unfortunately...

  • @Lassionbabe its been that way for hundreds if years. People over in japan arent taught to show many expressions. the dances are a reflection of that.

  • What do you called this dance with fan ?

  • @MsCute0005 The song is called "飛梅の賦” (tobi ume no fu) maybe can translate as "Poem of the Flying Ume". It's a reference to Michizane Sugawara. This dance is different than what I learned. Honestly the choreography seems odd to me and doesn't fit well. Though at one part she put the fan to her ear, might be "listening" for a sound in the distance.

  • at the start the way she is walking looks like she really needs the toilet

  • I don´t know why you´re all talking about geisha and geiko here, this person is obv. a nihon buyo dancer

  • i dont get it

  • @Arachnah you are right about the association between prostitutes and geisha in the western culture are skewed but the geisha world is so secretive and i don't thing the novel (which i loved) was too off i will more likely believe that they will deny some aspects of being a geisha because of how it looks from a foreign culture's POV i don't think the author would go through the trouble of being as accurate as possible by traveling to japan and interviewing retired geisha just to write lies

  • @Arachnah Yeah Meiko don't sell their virginity anymore. It's only a ceremony now.

  • @DominoShadow of course its not anymore its against the law now...the movie and book are historical accounts of the society

  • @cutiefbaby Well it's not againast the law, it's just not morally acceptable aymore. And what boko and movie are you talking about?

  • @cutiefbaby Memoirs of a geisha..the author put alot of research into that book...and yes it is illegal it becam illegal in the 1950s as a form of prostitution

  • this odori vid rocks, she was taught well. Is she fujima ryu or hanayagiryu?

  • her hands...are so beautiful...!!!

  • her kimono is so utterly gorgeous... this dance is really beautifully done :)

  • how graceful :)

  • Who cares what her hair looks like? I bet to the people in the audience, most (if not all) of whom know nothing about Japanese dances, this looks pretty BAMF.

  • what is the name of this dance?

  • Actually before the war, a maiko's(a Geisha apprentice) virginity would be auctioned (the original "mizuage") it was outlawed in 1959.

  • Very beautiful dance.

  • i'm a black gurl and i would luv 2 become a geisha because i think it's(or that's)

wonderful ;-) but i'm gonna have 2 take some lessons first though

  • @KaramelLolaBunnie91 I wish you the best of luck. in the entire history of Tokyo the only lady not of Japanese decent to become a full geisha took 15 years for her training and she had been living in japan since she was five. the geisha are like magicians and vary rarely share their secrets. i personally would also love to be a geisha but im a guy so <)

  • @ISHODEN ur so sweet(blushez) ^_^

  • @KaramelLolaBunnie91 I would recommend walking on your heels with your knees slightly bent for long piriods of time or actually getting geishas clogs so that its not so painful. X) i wear my normal japanese clogs for half an hour and my feet want to die! So ya thats my first advice, good luck and good travels. :)

  • @ISHODEN thankz can we b friendz

  • i do not know much of anything of this traditional danceing. but from watching this woman, i must say that she was flawless.

  • This young woman is doing traditional Japanese Dance. She learned the dance in Japan and performed it in USA. She is very good. The Kimono is authentic and beautifully worn. Notice the lovely foot work.

  • @Arachnah Oiran and Taayu , the prostitutes dressed also in kimono and with white makeup, also went through a mizuage, but for them it was losing their virginity by doing it with the customer that bid the most. This really ruind the reputation of maiko geiko and geisha in europe and america.

  • Merci beaucoup.

  • @Arachnah Yes i agree, i look at them more like artists ^^ I like watching them dance XD

  • @Arachnah the movie is different from the book, the author mentioned this in the book, the book is better than the movie, it's one of my recommended read.

  • Amei , simplesmente a tecnica japonesa é unica !!!

  • I completely agree with DeadlyChinchilla, life has improved greatly for women. Poor farmers sold many of their daughters to the houses and they had to work a good 15 years until they had enough money to "pay" their way out.--That is if they didn't die from syphillus or just plain exhaustion from the long hours. It's funny to think that this lifestyle is now celebrated and considered beautiful when it really was miserable.

  • @Phoenixkidd Everything about being a geisha was hard. like you said they could be stricken with syphilis, but they also suffered from skeletal deformation, respiratory blockage and poisoning from their makeup. i watched an autopsy of a semi-mummified geisha and the bone deformation was horrific.

  • @ISHODEN Not that Im so sickko who likes to see dead things, but Im actually rather curious of what that looked like. Where did you see that? Im trying to find it and I'm having no luck. where did the skeleta deformation come from?

  • @Fayyzz so you say you got a skeleton in your closet

  • When women were women..LONG TIME AGO...

  • Long time ago? You mean back when little girls were sold into virtual slavery in the geisha houses? Yeah, "women were women" then... back when they had no power save selling themselves. I'll take modern times, thanks.

    Beautiful dance though.

  • nothing less than beautiful.

  • this is stunning they have alot or dedication to this major kudou's

    love watching odori

  • In my opinion, her hair is too casual and her movements are too stiff.

I read Geisha, A Life before I even knew MoaG existed. I cherish that book and read it all the time; Mineko Iwasaki is one of my idols. The movie MoaG is pretty to look at, and that's it. That bastard near ruined Mineko Iwasaki's reputation.

  • I'd say that Japanese traditional dance is kinda stiff... But she is a professional dancer, I can see it. Some poses are breathtaking, her movemets r very precise, fan work is incredible, wrists r very flexible.. Again just my opinion. Btw, she isn't a geisha; she is a dancer.

  • Oh, I know she isn't a geisha. If I thought she was a geisha I couldn't call myself a geisha fan. ^^

It is very obvious that she's a professional dancer. It's a beautiful dance, she does an amazing job, but I'd like to see the dance performed softer with more fluidity. We all have our preferences. =D

  • I completely agree. And tough this dancer is good posture wise, she is not as graceful.I have seen some great Japanese dancing , and I find their fine movements and flourishes so sensual and beautiful. This is really ot there.

  • I'm not sure this girl is supposed to be a geisha.

  • @xcuppiixcakex that fancy hair takes HOURS to do if you don't have a wig, most dance groups don't use the big hair unless its an important preformance, other than that, its just a bun

  • @xcuppiixcakex She is not suppose to be a "geisha" this is more a "noh" style of dance. NOT everyone in a kimono that's dancing is a "geisha". Much in the same way seeing Leonardo DiCaprio in Romeo and Juliet doesn't make one an authority of classic English play writes, seeing the movie that dare not speak it's name, "played by a caste of Chinese" doesnt make one an expert in Japanese performing arts.

  • Watashi wa Nihonjin no kimono totemo suki,

dakara tachi-no kifujin kimono onaji desu. ^^

  • really luv the way she dance..

  • I'm looking for a Japanese fan dance video that I could maybe follow along with for the school culture collaboration and I think I found what I was looking for. ^^ Except I need fans. xD

  • i love japanese fan i have 2 blue dragons 1's

  • It is not necessarily accurate. but can you say that it does not say something for what their lives have always been and have now become?

  • She´s Cutee :3

  • That's why you have Oiran. Oiran Geisha are actually prositutes and traditional geisha are artists. Watch Sakuran

  • There is no such thing as "Oiran Geisha". Oiran are just called oiran, not gaisha at all.

I rather liked Sakuran (I preferred the manga to the movie, though, but the movie was not bad).

  • Oiran aren't geisha at all, although they are similar. Geisha dance and sing, ect, but TYPICALLY were not expected to have sex with someone they are not in a relationship with. In some areas, geisha were high class prostitutes (but still not an oiran.) Oiran were expected to be highly artistic and educated in order to be legendary lovers, geishas' role was to be irresistible as an artist and celebrity. Typical prostitutes were expected to be classy, but that's about it. Loved Sakuran too, btw.

  • Shes tiny!

  • Yup, shame indeed...

  • you cant criticize a geisha if you haven't read/seen memoirs of a geisha. Their lives have always been hard, even harder now that people arent into traditional music and common whores walk the street dressed like geisha.

  • very true... it pisses me off when people say that geisha are whores, infact they are artists, entertainers... the word geisha itself meant artist... 'gei' means 'art' and 'sha' means 'person... artperson=artist.

  • Memoirs of a geisha is just a film/novel, and even though it is very well made and beautifl to watch, many facts and details aren't correct. Do you believe everything you see on TV? I wouldn't say I know the space very well only coz I've seen star wars If you get my point!

  • "common whores walk the street dressed like geisha".

What? What are you talking about?

  • k just like to point out we don't consider ourselves geishas. We just consider ourselves to be Japanese Dancers. So don't call them geishas, thats a lifestyle, this is just dancing. Like tap or ballet.

  • MoaG is a work of fiction based on Iwasaki Mineko's life... which Arthur Golden shreaded to pieces. If you want a real story on a real Geisha read Iwasaki's autobiography.

  • that kimono is sooooo pretty

  • ah how lovley japan rules!

  • nice, beautiful dance.

  • Now THAT is a small woman.

    Beautiful song/dance though.

  • It wasn't just me than, I thought maybe it was because she was bending at the knees that made her seem small, but it wasn't. I can't judge her size though. She might be small then me and I'm only 5 ft 1in.

  • WOW! Beautiful song, dancer, dance, lighting, everything. Thank you for uploading! Can anyone tell if this is indeed a maiko? Her hairstyle and obi tell me no, but her skill makes wonder...

  • may i know whats the title of this song?

  • that spining thing looks sweet
