  • Back when the blues was in 6/8

  • I have never heard Aretha sing a song better.

  • Man cannot produce this kind of talent. SHE IS GOD created Product of LOVE and TALENT> NO MAN can claim he had anything to do with such a beautiful SPIRIT as Aretha. HER father is GOD above.!!!!!!!!!!

  • she's beyond the Atlantic arrangements.

    Let her be free...

  • underrated piano player. SHIT!

  • She is, she is, she is, the Undisputed Queen. Lawd Ham Mursay

  • She sounds fantastic as usual but the video quality is very bad. Long live the queen of soul!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • She can really play too. She was sooooooooooooo very good!!

  • @georgerannie She is not was.

  • classic

  • Thank You.

  • Nobody beats Aretha. she owns this song. However, the Kit McClure Band with Louise Bethune singing lead and Deb Knapper doing an incredible guitar solo, are pretty darn good. Try it!

  • Alright, right on.

  • She drips of Sweet Soul!

  • man she's already bad ass with that voice but then the piano, my god woman-alive, she's AMAZING!

  • yes, ma`am, i feel like hearin` the blues. fuckin` badASS! this tempo is KILT!

  • She is an awesome musician!

  • Study her timing. Whatever, however is she doing this?! She is boiling her self down giving and sharing so much including humor in her music.

  • ...just so we don't forget why Aretha is the "Queen of Soul" She worked that pianio.

  • I am a witness!!

She tore up that piano last Friday in Hollywood!!

  • this gives me chills!! she is KILLING those keys!!!

  • Ooooh WEEE!!! Go Aretha!

  • Now that is what I would call feelin it.

  • THis is the same year of the Filmore concert, isn't it? I wish somebody had THAT footage, especially her and Ray Charles doing "Spirit in the Dark"

  • yes its the same year. she was having vocal problems that year but still always delivery amazing performances

  • SISTA RE -- back in the day ALWAYS played the piano at her concerts..and when she left the stage the audience was exhausted! She could make you feel every emotion she was feeling as she sang and played all you could say was DAMN!

Sometimes when she was home -- she would just stop by her fathers Church on Sunday morning and she turned the Church out equally as well.

Nobody could touch her then or now. She is quite the lady even in 2009!

    Happy 67th Aretha

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! To the one and only Queen in American music. The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. She is 67 today. By the way it was 1967 that she recorded her ultra hit R E S P E C T.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY ARETHA xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • ppl talk about patti...plz!

patti couldnt touch aretha in her hay day! dammit!

  • thats true, thats why shes a legend. We remember how amazing she was, like Whitney. But Pattie has gotten better and held it down. Pattie deserves hers for transending and aretha is a legend, cuz she aint nothing like she used to be.

  • An ex of mine (a singer in a local bar band) sat on my lap and sung this to me in front of a packed bar. At first, I was slightly embarrassed. Then I though, fuck it. That's right, motherfuckers, I've got a big ass dick.

  • thought, rather

  • Unnecessary info, sir

  • Eat shit and die! I, and not you, am the arbiter of the necessity of the various elements of my posts.

  • and now, settle down, sir

  • You can take the girl out of gospel, but you can't take the gospel out the girl, preach it Ree.

  • I haven't read all 135 comments yet and somebody may have already mentioned it, but this seems to have been recorded about the same time as "Aretha Live at Filmore West." The instrumentation, personnel and arrangement appears to be the same, however, the live version is LIVE! and full of indescribable energy and raw soul! Certainly one of the greatest LIVE concerts ever recorded. If you've never heard it and you are an Aretha fan, treat yourself to some pure pleasure and check it out.

  • I believe she's in Italy here. Fillmore West happened earlier in the year. This is the same European tour where she was accompanied by her father, Rev. C.L. Franklin & was around the time King Curtis was murdered.

  • Thank you, comicalk. The info you provided is well appreciated.

  • if anyone needs to download this song.

Hit me Up I'll show you how.

  • A shame I wasnt born black♪

If I try to sing these high tunes I'd end up in hospital...

  • Oh my DAMN, amazing.

  • whoa!!!!!! good vid!

    lets meetup! jp

  • YES! YES! YES!!!

Noone could touch Aretha Franklin back in the day. None of these artist today could handle her or her style back then. She is the Queen of Soul for a reason. Her style demands RESPECT. Gotta give credit where credit is due. Flawless Entertainer, Voice, and Passion for her art.

  • @livvytodd YOU FORGET 1 Thing: Her Piano Playing = So GREAT Here! & Aint NOONE Today that can match her skill and beauty. She has GUTS: unlike the Pretenders Today. And WHY?? This Pathetic Generation Coming Up - Who Can't Even PLAY Piano, Sing In Tune. It Makes me Sad. Our Kids Can'tEven Play Piano Anymore. What has happened to The Blues? Burried Under a Pile Of Junk --- Thrown Into the Closet to Rot. Gen X ---- SHAME ON YOU. Whores and Pimps is all We Got Left. Thank You. ~ttt~

  • @tomthumbtoo All we have is Alicia Keys, well it's really all about who we ARE GIVEN and who record execs choose to GIVE US!

  • @HaliB75 Check out my tribute to Aretha singing this song! I hope you enjoy it!

  • @tomthumbtoo I feel you on this. I remember in our neighbor hood we used to put our bands together and make money or play in the church and got collection and skills.

  • @tomthumbtoo Yes the young African-Americans have disowned The Blues, but some of us white kids are keepin' it alive as best we can, we won't let it die!

  • @livvytodd DDDIIITTTTTOOOOOO!!!!!!!

  • @livvytodd - Strange to recall that it was Carla Thomas who was called the Queen of Soul at the time. But I agree Aretha will always be the greatest!

  • Wow,I didn't know AF played the nano too.

  • SO COOL !!! Aretha is the best

  • Good God Almighty!

  • OMG!!! This great pianist can sing.

Help. First time in my life a woman turned me on. Ugh, I think it's the performance not women.

Oh, well, thought I'd experienced something new, but it's just plain, old being transported by music, yet again. Thanks for posting. Aretha, the Reverend must have made sure you practiced your scales!

  • effortless!

  • thank you for posting this classic

  • This song may be best known as the B-side to Respect.

  • I'll get up, put on some clothes and go out and help them find someone for themselves if I can.

    Too true! ;)

  • I get chills just listening to the vibe that is Aretha. I love listening to just her & the piano, esp. doing anything Blues. Wish I could've heard it live! She is a treasure!

  • I love this song so much. People tend of forget the fabulous piano player Aretha is. WOW!

  • Incredible!!!

  • reeeeeediculous, it would take most great artists a few times in the studio to get it right. she does it live, perfick.

  • I don't care about all those comparisons , this sista is here is a musical complete artist .

  • Oh YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

  • what you say girl!!!!!!

  • As usual there is so much more to the artist than meets the ear. Who knew Lady Soul was such a bad a** piano player? Incredible! Thanks for this sweet vintage.

  • another great thing bout her is she cant read piano music sheets, she learns how to play songs by ear. shes has many talents

  • Unfortunately I have never had the pleasure of seeing her live. However this clip gets me close!!!!

  • it was a big white lady on showtime at the apollo that blew this song up. that's the video i was looking for. i didn't no Aretha sang this.

  • Thats the definition of soul right there.

  • Aretha girl, watch your self!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Her voice is so incredible and her persona so compelling that her magnificence as a pianist is somewhat (well very much) overlooked...it was the same with Nina Simone

  • that performance, the voice, the tickling of the keys of the piano, that is such a stirring performance,... so moving.

  • she is the female elvis. will never be another like her.

  • Aretha has a voice thats a gift from God !!!

  • Nice blues song! She`s got a good voice!

  • thankyou for posting this gem.perfection.

  • Beautiful song (luv it) and brilliant perfomance...her piano virtuosism is perfectly in tune..Well done Aretha!

  • YOWW... THIS IS SINGING! voice sends shivvers ... piano reverbs thru u ... n its got a gramophone fizzle that just males it tastier! EAR SEX

...(metaphor - dont go tryin anythin painful now)

  • We rarely see such talent, cultivated and refined. What a gift she has!

  • She will never be duplicated. YOU GO GURRRL !

  • You don't find many women that play like that. That is what you call putting dirt in your piano. It is a very difficult technique that gives a piano a unique voice. She is just phenomenal.

  • No, that's called putting some stank on it, that's all that is, lol.

  • Aaahhreetaathaa !!! can make me cry

  • i love this song and her piano skils are great. i always try and find this song on any of her cds....such a great song

  • this is on her live at the fillmore cd 1971...easily found anywhere.

  • There is an excellent version of this on Aretha's Delta Meets Detroit cd. In fact, the whole cd is one of those 'can't stop listening till it plays all the way through' disks. P.S. - I've heard Irma Thomas do her own version of this song, and I have to say she also does an excellent job.

  • This clip BLEW ME AWAY! Aretha Franklin is the Awesome Queen of Soul!

  • GO ARETHA! Beautiful!

  • This what you call down home blues and nobody can live, feel it, breath it, and sing it like Aretha

  • WHOOSH!

  • exactly

  • she is really relaying her feelings through the music, i really didn't know she played that well.

  • Amazing! I was more enraptured with her piano playing than her voice on this song, and that's unusual for me because I love to hear Aretha's runs.

  • soul incarnate/made real

  • I'll get up, put on some clothes, go out and help them find someone for themselves if I can! Love those lyrics!!

I didn't know she could play the piano so well and I've been a fan my whole life!

  • Yes she plays just as well as she sings. She is a complete package.

  • agree. the complete package for sure!

  • I love YOUTUBE, she is the Queen

  • As a pianist and singer myself it amazes me what she can do both as the singer and the acompanist.

  • Thank you for puttin this video

  • She is the QUEEN of Soul, I LOVE Aretha!

  • I knew she could play, but not like this....This bumps her up even further in my esteem. Love this! Thank you.

  • This is what it's all about.Ms Ree at the top.

Soulful gospel blues and those piano licks are incredible. Are there any vids from the Amazing Grace performances?

  • Fantastic.

    Thanks

  • Don't send me no doctor!! I like Jerry Wexler's description of her as "Our Lady of Sorrowful Mysteries." Monster talent, artistic soul.

  • Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. WOW, i'm now as much a fan of Ms. Franklin's piano playing as i am her singing. She plays like a man.

  • A man? Babe, she's all woman. Perhaps its time to re-examine your definitions.

  • Awesome O_O

  • I think most people don't know that Aretha is an incredible pianist. She is a favorite among R&B musicians of the day. A lot of her Atlantic arrangements were structured around her singing at the piano with other instruments being added later.

  • yessss...ree plays that piano like no other...a double fisted pianist...so talented..so much to other..and so much she has given us...

  • Whew!!!

That song made me feel so gooooooooood! Can't nobody say you can't play that damn piano. The best performance of this song.

  • tearin' it ""UP""!!!!!!!!!

  • Still and Always the Queen.

  • She sounds her best when she plays... she is rockin'the house singing the blues, lol...

  • it's so true... Aretha when she accompanies herself at the piano is a force of nature. She's a great stand-up singer, but she belongs at the piano, like Ray, Stevie, Brian McKnight... All of them are just better behind the keys than standing up at the mic. If only record people would get it through their heads that not every singer is a dancer

  • Aretha is just amazing. Not only is she The BEST singer in the world but she also plays the piano beautiful. She truly has some skills on the piano!
