Well he's an idiot then. What constitutional mandate does the government have to run health care? None. Hawaii has just over a million people, if they want to pay for one another's health care costs then that is their problem. Hawaii is incredibly expensive to live in, the price of goods and services is far higher than the mainland. Add additional taxation to support socialized medicine and then wonder why the state has one of the biggest gaps between rich and poor of anywhere in the USA.

it's because hawaii is a resort state, plus an isolated island, so goods need to be shipped in, which jacks up the cost of living, which can create a large class gap, unless average income is high enough (which it isn't). without health care people die. also, In Canada (where i live), your life isn't ruined if your not rich, and you break your leg skiing, and have to pay a $26,000 hospital bill.

@randekio: What you British subjects don't understand is that Americans have traditionally embraced individual responsibility and the free market, not socialism. If you break your leg skiing, why the hell should I have to pay for it? Take responsibility for your actions, don't rely on the nanny state, which never gets anything right, to save you. Government health care also decreases choice in doctors (fewer specialists too!), raises taxes, and leads to longer lines and inadequate service.

Socialism is the redistribution of wealth by government, i.e. stealing from you to pay for someone/something else. I'm not quite sure why you don't understand this concept or why you think that there is any such thing as "free" health care. You can't "oppose" going broke when you get sick because you have no inherent, natural right to health care. You have a right to life, liberty, and property, not a service. You have no right to force someone else to pay for your hospital bills.

The bank bailout is an example of corporate welfare- stealing from taxpayers to subsidize corporations that acted irresponsibly. If it's taxed it means all of us are paying for it whether we choose to or not.

Also, The Government has no right to force a healthcare plan on me or anyone else...The fact that my income is just above poverty line does not mean that others should have to pick up my slack. * Balancing the resorces amongst the populous without discrimination to work ethic or ability = Socialism. look it up.

I would gladly pay a tax which enabled small business to offer benifits and wage increases. But that will never happen. @KoopdaVillain602 i agree with your idea of a tax to help small business. this isn't about addicts, this is about being able to get care when you need it, even if you can't afford it. your government (i'm canadian) is/was corrupt, and that is why there was no health care for so long. they were trying to save money. maybe obama's program isn't perfect (we're still improving on ours as well) but it's a start. just look at the success universal healthcare has had in other countries.
