I was so disappointed after seeing the 2012 Beetle, because the engine is in the wrong place, power goes through the wrong wheels, it's too big, too heavy and too complicated, and also too expensive. Many people know that the original VW Beetle was produced by Ferdinand Porsche but few know that he was given the design sketches and ordered to produce the "people's car" by Adolf Hitler himself when he came to power shortly after in 1932. It was Hitler who also ordered the construction of the Autobahn back then when only 1.3% Germans owned cars whereas in America it was 20%. Both designs have stood the Test Of Time. And we thought ol' Adolf was good for nothing except killing Jews, no?

@AccordGTR Yes, but Porsche had been kicking around the basic idea for what became the Volkswagen years before Hitler came along, and even built a prototype (the Porsche type 12). It even already had a similar name: "Auto für Jedermann", or "car for everyone".

Hitler's sketches were just doodles, nothing that anyone could use to build a car without a LOT more blueprinting. All he really did was finance the project, and was (perhaps) the first to describe it as looking like a beetle.

@TBustah Hitler coined the name Volkswagen. Hitler directed Porsche to build the car to his specifications - the story wasn;t Porsche went to Hitler to ask money to build the car fyi. Yes Porsche had a design but it was flawed and so they looked at the Czech Tartra car that Hitler wanted to apply to His country. Porsche talked to the chief designer of Tartra and took some of their features. After the war Tartra sued Porsche for copying 10 engineering patents and won - Porsche paid them $10M.

It doesn't change the fact that Hitler had virtually no involvement with the car. He didn't even care if it succeeded or not, he just used it as a propaganda tool to sway public opinion in his favor.

Hitler came to Porsche, but like I said, Porsche already had the idea. Hitler gave Porsche specs, but they were just basic requirements of what the car had to be able to do.
