Not sure how ticking off your fellow citizens by holding up rush hour traffic on a Friday afternoon (on a regular basis, as that) is going to somehow persuade them of the merits of your position. Most people in my city would just find a way to introduce your elbow to a rear view mirror. Either that or give you a Coke in the ear.
I totally disagree with the methods of Critical Mass. I ride the streets of Boston every day and I feel like CM puts me at a greater danger than if people just cooperated instead of intentionally antagonized those who share the road with them. It gives cyclists a bad name. It makes people think that we all have no respect for the laws of the road.
The idea is cool but the way it's handled is not. I think one of the main problem is that there is no "Leader" to properly organize the ride. I think at the very least, stay on the bike lane or something. Other then that the video was good.
I agree! I don't like it when the bikers cross into the oncoming lane and interrupt oncoming traffic. It's sufficient to stay in one traffic lane. However, when 500 or more bikers are participating it's impossible for all of us to stay in the small bike lane. It's the same concept as a march... taking the street to try to raise awareness about something. A march violates traffic laws; marchers can't let cars drive in the middle of the march either! Otherwise, bikers should obey traffic laws.
They ride together through red lights to keep cars from driving in the middle of the group which would make it unsafe? How about riding on the correct side of the street instead of head on with incoming traffic? Bike awareness and respect for the cyclist? How about respect for the rules of the road? I understand the dangers that some of these drivers are to cyclist because I ride also but I will never ride with CM if this is how they try to earn the respect of drivers.
Nice! Check out our vids of CM in Philly... we could use more good outreach like this because Philly has a big bike population but most of CM is very punk rock--not a bad thing in and of itself, but can be cliquish, making CM seem like it's not for everyone.
its a website I and a couple friends created to help get more people going to critical mass, to us its a fun event that sends out many positive messages. We understand that people at cm ride for many reasons so we support no specific cause. It is merely for information and a place to share your cm experience.
I recieved permission from cheencheenvideo to post this. Thanks for the great addition to the CM community!
well this video itself wasn't badly made but I fully disagree with the premise. Most people have to or choose to drive a car. Holding up traffic and riding in the street (which is designed for cars not bycicles) just makes people idle their car in traffic that much longer and makes them wait to get home. So if you wonder why people get mad at this whole thing, that's why.
We are very aware that's why people get mad. I don't like to anger people, but the pros tend to outweigh the cons with the bike awareness that is spread by this event, in my opinion. Also, while modern streets are designed for cars, in Chicago and many other cities streets are for bikes too. There are bike lanes on many of the streets, and in Chicago if you are under 13 you can get ticketed and fined for riding a bike on the sidewalk; you're supposed to ride it in the street. Thanks for sharing!
I checked out the web page a little bit. Looks like a great resource. Thanks for putting my video on it! I also did a related video about train transportation (Amtrak vs. Shinkansen) which you can find on my YouTube page as well, in case you're interested.
I'll check it out. Well done on this one btw. Just to let you know, WiserEarth is open-source / wiki based. So you can get on there, create a profile, and edit any page you like. So feel free to add anything you've made to the site.
This just makes it LESS safe for bikers. That's why as a biker I hate Critical Mess.

Most of these people dont even ride a bike on a daily basis. Theyre just out there cuz they have nothing better to do at that time. How pathetic.

Critical mass is illegal, the cyclists should be arrested for mob action, along with getting tickets for every stop light and stop sign they run.

Anyone caught running a redlight or a stop sign should be ticketed. Simple as that. Would you want car club to do a critical mass? I think not.
BestTits 2 years ago
They do that pretty much every day in the big US cities.
OmegaDude22 2 years ago
I lived in a city that did not have a critical mass. Motorist were very evil and the police threatend me for riding by the law.
If motorist want critical mass to end, they need to start driving with respect and by the law.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
have you noticed that blocking off cars with 500 cyclists is going to make them use up more petrol as they constantly accelerate and decellerate?
yes, you may be saving petrol by cycling, but you are causing drivers to use more petrol
