James and Larry are the best.I remember my friend let me hear The Barkays and I was hooked at the age of 7,lol....Been funking since then,lol.....I got their greatest hits and I roll me a stogey and jam my boys riding around my hood.
I hate to nitpick, but since this is one my favorite cuts EVER, I gotta point out that this is definitely not live -- they're lip syncing (most people probably know this). I was so excited when I searched and saw that there was a live performance of Holy Ghost! But alas...
But thanks for posting anyway. Even a lip-syncing Bar Kays is better than most of the hum drum twiddly dee dum out today. :-)
Ironic how today all these s0-called hip people of today are like watered down and their perceptions are so out of touch with reality to the point they will believe anything somebody or some unknowned source tell's them.
I was born in 62 and lived through all this great music and if I could have one decade back it would be the Rocking 70's Everybody was on point all genres of music..
I had a limo business in the 70]s in north carolina did a lot of shows with mr alexander ane the bar kays there one of the very best, my name charles,Charles the first limo service, from roscoe's limo service remember me
I have seen the Bar-kays dozens of times. This band NEVER got the accolades it deserves. I've seen them open for other groups and simply destroy them (I'm not going to mention any names) This may be the best LIVE funk band.
Man I'm a bit disappointed - I expected more kicking and general anticsI know when I hear this song, I start actin' a pure monkey FOOL and do NOT care who sees!
@bmuhamad You are exactly right. Song sat for three years and still didn't get much play for another five years. Think when they first recorded this in the early 70's who was doing anything close, way ahead of it's time.
I understand that when they first recorded the song "Holy Ghost". The Record Company, Stax, put the song on the "shelf ". They thought the song was too advanced and their fans weren't ready for this song or some type of organized rebellion from church group...would be forthcoming...
watched unsung! Rick james before he became the super freak! used to go and watch the Barkays perform and took lots of pictures, can't you tell . He took the style and dress from the lead singer Larry dobson of the barkays!
these cats were featured on TV-ONE'S UNSUNG this past week and i can't stop watchin' it....their story is absolutely incredible. they showed footage of the plane wreck that killed OR and most of the band...NEVER KNEW THERE WAS A LONE SURVIVOR - THE TRUMPET PLAYER BEN CAULEY....his recollection of that day was chilling. there was actual footage shown of the rescuers pulling OR's body out of the chilly waters....for any "old school lover", unsung's documentaries are a "must-see".

THIS song close the book on FUNKY preacher 70's R&B and FUNK .MAURICE WHITE gave good feel good lectures BUT LARRY AND JAMES TOOK "ERRBODDY TA CHUCH'' on this one . well...well ..well......
Right its got a lot of Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers style. I used to go to see them at Summer in the Parks for free! When B ustinj' Loose came it was off tha chain!
@GsShay you are sooooooooooo right!!! lol larry's hair look betta' than ANY WOMAN'S weave!!!! lol but, this song is THE STUFF!!! i love the part where it stops @ 2:27 and shifts into an even STANKIER groove.....and then here comes the drums!!!! WELL!!! WELL!!! WELL!!!! ain't no' mo' music like this....70's fah Life!!!
