There was no travel done by Rose, his play was clean...It probably looks like a travel but his first step counts for the dribble crossover he did and then goes for the layup.
I understand what a gather step is, it's essentially 2.5 steps: the gather step( while the ball is dribbled for the last time before takeoff), and two steps after. But, D-Rose took 3 steps AFTER he stopped dribbling the ball. So it's a travel. This is what he did R(gather step),L,R,L. The last step he took while dribbling was his right foot, therefore he should've jumped off his right foot for it not to be a travel. That's like saying Blake Griffin's dunk on Gallinari was not
@robinson1194 traveling when it clearly was. Blake jumped off his right foot, took a step with his left, spun completely around, and jumped off both feet which is traveling. He could've avoided that by gather stepping on his left, then completely spin around and jump off both feet.
@luobronjames and apparently lebron created it and he named it the "crab dribble".
but ya its not a travel, they basiclly call it 2 and a half steps because he was picking up his dribble when he took that first step, if the ball was in both of his hands, thats different
@luobronjames alright smartass...go to 0:12 in the slow motion replay part...he crosses the ball between his legs 3 times (so 3 dribbles)...then after his last dribble, he takes a step with his left foot...then with his right...then he takes ONE MORE STEP with his LEFT foot and so jumps into the air off of his left foot...3 steps is a travel...and even people who don't play basketball can understand that!
@indianslimshady1 The first "step" you're seeing is part of the dribble. He only takes two steps after that. No travel. You might want to learn a little more about the sport.
@blacstar101 im pretty sure i know enough about basketball to see this: at 0:14 or 0:15, he does a hard crossover from HIS left hand to his right and then he heads toward the rim. AFTER he does his crossover and has the ball in his right hand, he takes a step with his left foot, then his right, then his left again. sorry, but thats a travel. if he had taken his first step as he was doing his crossover, then it wouldnt be a travel. but he did his crossover first then his 3 steps.
@luobronjames no by the way it states in the rules this is a travel. after his last dribble he takes 3 steps which is a travel. a gather step is illegal if you take 2 steps after. its called a gather STEP, so you can only take one step after you do it to make a legal 2 step drive to the basket.
@TehScottyBoy as long as his hand isn't underneath the ball or he has both hands on the ball, he hasn't officially picked up his dribble yet. that's how the nba is. maybe not allowed in international competition but the nba purposely allows this.
@luobronjames I know right? I don't get why so many nba fans on youtube still don't understand the fucking concept of the gather step. Are they all just little kids who mindlessly watch highlights and don't actually know how the game is played?
It's like all they do is try to count the number of steps, without knowing how the dribble affects the number of steps you can take. This clip is the most basic fucking drive in in the nba, the one dribble+gather step+two steps.
@ArsenAndVardan yeh fuck gather step. But he still only took two steps AFTER he PICKED UP HIS DRIBBLE. The steps only start counting when you pick up your dribble which is when you start carrying the ball (not when the ball last leaves the ground). Simple explanation for bball noobs
@krugaboog If your hand is on top of the ball while still in a dribbling motion, you can take as many steps as you want. This is similar to a stutter step, when several small steps are taken between dribbles. Once you put your hand underneath the ball or pick it up, this dribble motion is done, though.
Its not a travel because he was still at the motion....
