why is it that in 1963 they had a vehicle called the peel p50 that could do 100mpg and they cant even get close to that nowadays?

I'm sure you've seen a peel p50! Its a 1 person bubble! its less practical than a moped!
FYI We now have cars in the (in europe anyway) that are capable of 70+ MPG on a combined run, thats with four seats, air con, a boot and > 100 bhp. I'm thinking of BMW's new mini.

have you seen Jeremy Clarkson driking one, sure you can on youtube, its hilarious. As you say it has a different sort of practicality. He takes it up in the elavator and drives it around the offices, lol.
the 60's cooper may be more efficient than the petrol version new min, but not the diesel. Its all about the diesel! Apparently diesel in the US and Canada is not of good enough grade for new generation diesels from europe? I think...
