  • Why was Robert Mitchum not ever nominated for an Academy Award?

  • I'm crazy about this movie. Gish and Mitchum were two of the most unique talents in the history of cinema. Together, they're pure magic

  • Such A Fantastic Film. Not Only is Robert Mitchum Terrifying, He's Also Fantastic To Look At. :3

  • preachers a legend haa

  • Isn't it interesting how she says "lean on Jesus," but he never mentions Jesus. What a false prophet he is.

  • @BoundaryShift Part of what drew Mitchum to accept this role was that in is youth he had travelled the country, bumming in hobo camps, and he encountered real backwoods communities where, in his own words "people would believe anything a man said as long as he had a bible in his hands." So it is kind of a warning to beware charlatans and false prophets in a way.

  • Lilian Gis is the best:)))

  • "This is the story of love and hate... this hand made Cane kill his brother... these 4 fingers go straight to the soul" - Radio Raheem

  • Robert Mitchum absolutely favorite actor.

  • Only a weird fat bastard from Yorkshire could direct something as brilliant and spooky as this!

  • Man. This movie is so creepy. And no cheap thrills, either. Robert Mitchum was perfection.

  • Great scene. Absolutely brilliant. The sense of tension here is almost palpable.

  • Some say that the screenwriter James Agee, who won the Pulitzer Prize for his novel "A Death in the Family" had a large role in directing the film with Laughton. Agee also wrote the Depression era classic "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men". He died young.

  • I never understood the ending of this - he was put to death, right?

    I hope he was.

  • One of my favourite film noir

  • We just finished this movie in my film class. I loved it. Extremely well made.

  • tell me that owl @ the end is the model for the bounty hunter in star wars

  • Charles Laughton was one ugly sunavabitch but he sure as hell could direct a movie.

  • Who disliked this? It's bloody brilliant!

  • The urge to walk around late at night singing this song is too tempting.

  • @petertedonefilm And the guy could sing too.

  • I hope I never hear that song outside while I am inside sleeping...

  • I'm spooky!

  • I love Bobbys lush voice He'd made a homicidal maniac seem cool Jesus rules

  • This is such a brilliant scene with so many sub-text. Charles Laughton never got the credit he deserved for brilliant directing when this was released.

The juxtaposition of the serial killer and a old woman singing the christian hymn while he stalks her; one good, one evil.

Even the owl and rabbit scene-- so much depth.

  • Leaning on Jesus...and your gun.

  • Religious people are spooky as hell.

  • 1:30

    che che che che

  • She sings back at him because she's showing him she's still awake and not afraid to give that bastard a face full of buckshot.

  • It IS a hard world for little things goddammit.

  • At 1:29 he disappears completely... weird... is he a ghost or what?

This was such a strange movie, but so beautiful and quite intense in some moments.

  • His voice. <3

  • @meltingonion I know, I love it. :) So deep but warm.

  • Too scary

  • Phenomenal, simply put.

  • Thank you for the sermon, Mr. Mitchum . . . oh, no, don't worry about it. I didn't need to sleep tonight anyways . . .

  • scariest movie ever!! mitchum is devilish in it

  • best scene of the whole movie

  • @Amarcarts But there are so many to choose from! However I would agree that it's one of the top ones. It's eerie and almost magical in ways.

  • Robert Mitchum was one bad m...

  • awesome

  • awsome

  • I love how this movie shows the difference between crazy people and sane ones.

  • This movie scared the beegeebee's out of me the first time I saw it. I love it everytime I see it. I just watched it again today. Love it. Mitchum had a very nice singing voice. I hated him being in Cape Fear, and will never watch it. Too violent for my taste, Love Night Of The Hunter.

  • @DIANNEELEE Oh, you should really give Cape Fear a chance, it's fantastic, and Mitchum is great in it! It's not actually not that violent, it's mainly suspenseful with a few (very short) violent moments, which aren't at all graphic. Really, if you like The Night of the Hunter, you should really watch Cape Fear, I can't praise it enough. Not as good as NotH, but a really excellent film nonetheless.

  • @WolfQueene-Thanks! Nice reply. I am not usually so ready to change my mind, but now I will have to watch Cape Fear for sure. Thanks again. Now.....About Titanic and a really old one I have never watched either, Deliverance...LOL. But my sister is worse...She won't watch Edward Scissorhands. One of the most beautiful movies ever. And The One And Only...Johnny Depp...

  • @WolfQueene You were so right. I just watched Cape Fear with Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck and it was great. Thanks so much for bringing my attention to it.

  • From UK a riveting and superb film!

Mitchum reminds me of my grandad - a lovely man!

But a little scary in this.

    fantastic!!!

  • I can't say how much I LOOOOOVEE the lighting and photography in this film...I literally can't! I'm lost for words. lol.

  • MoMA recently held a Lillian Gish retrospective and she was so magnificent in "The Trip to Bountiful" that I couldn't believe it.

  • a lesson of cinematography

    a lesson of mise-en-scene

  • Probably one of the most twisted songs... goes from a Bible song, to a scary freaking song sung by a twisted preacher.

  • This film was a major influence on the Coen brothers. This hymn is used (Iris Dement version) in the closing scene of their True Grit remake.

  • Holy shit. I need to see this.

  • @PrezPendejo Check out who directed it, the great Charles Laughton.

  • A truly awesome scene. The black and white photography in this film was truly masterful. It's like a dark children's fairy tale. This and that amazing under water scene were two of the great shots in all cinema. An artistic masterpiece.

  • Great scene! Great movie!

  • Regardless how you criticize various aspects, the film is great storytelling. That's what missing these days to a large extent, simple, straightforward storytelling. It's from the simplicity that the complexities emerge; may sound paradoxical, but it's very true. One needn't search very deeply or go very far to see its validity.

  • @Bootmahoy88 It's difficult to have that aspect in cinema no matter what the time period, you could find it sorely lacking in mainstream films from the 50s and 60s. This film was not appreciated at all during its time. There were a lot of controversial scenes that had to be cut. For example, where the cut to the owl preying on the rabbit in this scene? It makes the scene so much more powerful.

There have been great films made today, There Will be Blood was masterful imo.

  • @Sshelly34213 There Will Be Blood was great up until the last 20 minutes. That last scene in his bowling alley was just ridiculous.

  • @researchsiempre Why? It was am ambiguous scene and a strange one. I think it deserves some interpretation and not just the phrase, "it ridiculous." That's not a proper critique. Was it a dream and a fantasy of his to kill Eli? Had Daniel become so far away from morality and people that death meant nothing to him?

Was it symbolic? Post modern society at the turn of the century saw the destruction of the creation myth of Christianity and people blamed it one capitalism.

  • @researchsiempre There are so many ways to interpret this that you can't just cast it off as "ridiculous!" And move on...

The film Tootsie is ridiculous and I love it. It's not about the subject it's about the portrayal. I can tell you're not a real film buff by making such a statement.

  • @Sshelly34213 yes i can. 'there will be blood' was great and the last 20 minutes was like they just needed to come up with a way to end the22 hour movie regardless the fact that it made no sense for daniel day lewis character to kill the preacher man.

  • @Sshelly34213 real film buff? lol. i can tell you haven't a clue what you're talking about.

and why are you bringing up tootsie? it was a completely different genre than' there will be blood.'

  • @researchsiempre No you can't, stop being a smug little shit.

Because Tootsie is inherently the most ridiculous idea for a plot ever devised. You're complaining that the end of There Will be Blood was ridiculous...I fail to understand why you can't make the connection. Does your brain work differently than the rest of ours?

  • @Sshelly34213 your brain clearly works differently if you think i'm going to conforn to your opinion. i don't give 2cents about tootsie. the last 20 minutes of there will be blood didn't work--bottom line.

  • @researchsiempre Oh my fucking God, can you stop acting like a mother fucking troll for two seconds?

Shut the fuck up. If you didn't get what I was trying to say-really laughable that your brain couldn't make a small connection like that-then just move the fuck on. Stop dragging out this fight for all eternity, I'm not going to deal with your pussy high school drama crap. Grow the fuck up. I've stopped giving a fuck about trying to explain why not all movies today are 100% shit.

  • @Sshelly34213 lol, take your meds, ASAP.

  • @researchsiempre Oh god just shut up already, there are no meds for people like you. Why are there so many smug little shits like you on the internet? Those who must state their opinions in a factual manner? Not only that, but nostalgic losers who want to go live back in the 50s because apparently, "it was better!"

I love how a valid expression of anger="you're fucking crazy!" No I'm fucking angry asshole, get that straight. Why? Because you're arrogance made me angry.

  • @Sshelly34213 wtf, your crazy ass again? your opinion was stated in a factual manner, or why keep arguing back and forth(delusionally)) unless you believe yourself to be right? you're not angry, you're crazy. there was no logical reason to get 'angry' over some anonymous person's(me) comments. so you must be crazy. get it now? take your meds and get over it.

  • @researchsiempre Don't even fucking go there, first of all, I shared an honest opinion with you. I was being friendly and you came back with this shitty condescending ass post.

You're the only delusional one here, go back and read you posts and tell me you weren't coming off as hostile and snotty.

No I'm not crazy, you're just an asshole. Go fuck yourself.

  • @Sshelly34213 you're the one cursing and becoming unhinged over a comment. hate to see what you do in traffic. you're a nut.

  • @researchsiempre Just looking at your comment section of your profile suggest that you have a problem getting along with other people.

  • @Sshelly34213 lo. yes i admit, i don't get along with racists, sexists or communists--and proudly so.

    and you're still a nut.

  • @researchsiempre No I'm certainly not, I am a rational human being who acted appropriately to some random troll who was unnecessarily rude to me.

    1. I did not reply to you, but you felt the need to reply to me

    2. you replied to me in a hostile and disagreeable manner

    3. You insist that I'm crazy for acknowledging this

I'm not going to play this crap with you, just stop talking to me and I won't bother you. It's that simple. You created your own drama here and you're going to end it.

  • @Sshelly34213 you're far from rational, judging by your comments. i stated my opinion and you had to keep replying as if somehow you could make me agree with you. it won't be happening, so get over it, loon.

  • @researchsiempre Oh just shut up already, do you ever get tired of badgering people? I mean how long ago was this conversation started? By the way a conversation YOU started. I'll get over it when you apologize to me for being a condescending asshole.

By the way, I doubt the only people you've had conflicts with were sexists or racist, I call out any racist comments I see and I've had very few problems with anyone on this board. You have a personality and attitude issue.

  • @researchsiempre When you act condescending and nasty, don't expect people to not blow up over that. Of course I blew up on you.

  • @Sshelly34213 you blew up over yourself. i just sat back and laughed.

  • @researchsiempre I never replied to you pal, you're the one who replied to me over something that had absolutely nothing to do with you. You instigated this fight because you probably go around youtube looking for that type of thing, judging from your profile comments. Just leave me the fuck alone, I don't want you responding me. I actually think I should block you because you're clearly just a troll.

  • @Sshelly34213 yet you still keep replying--take your meds.

  • @Sshelly34213 And that is YOUR opinion--stop stating as fact. That's where you got into trouble with me.

  • amazing movie with a magnificent cinematography.

  • There was one very funny part to the movie..... The way Peter Graves extracted Robert Mitchum from his bed when they were in jail. LMAO.... Mitchum hanging there like a dam bat ! ... and as "corny" as that scene was it somewhow "fit" and didn't diminish from the overall greatness of this masterpiece

  • @BobSTK when he stepped on a cat

  • Comment removed

  • 5 people are leaning on the everlasting arms.

  • Charles Laughton's directing ability is even greater than his waist measurement.

  • love robert mitchum havent seen full movie yet looking forward to hope fully i can get it on dvd

  • @tracytcb111111111111 It costs $10.99 on Amazon Australia, free P&P lol. Bargain.

  • @planetrockford thanks for that i live in australia so thats good ill get it as soon as i can thanks again

  • do you know why he didnt simonmoves? for somereason this movie was a flop when it came out, so much so that critics and movie goers talked mass shit. this is the last film he made,he killed hiself after being called a failure. its fuckin sad. this movie stands out as one of the best. id hold it up to films like To kill a mocking bird and wizard of oz.

  • @TheEricisdead Put down the pipe moron.

  • @goldenlover101 right after you take the pipe out of your ass GoldenLover? i bet that means you like to be peed on.

  • God damn it Ruby! thats what she wanted to say lol

  • this is a great movie-in every way-way ahead of its time--yes its a pity Charles Laughton didnt direct more of this movie callibre--just an amazing movie--shelleys in the water again..beautifully photographed-

  • Charles Laughton had a prolific acting career, one of the greatest! He had such POTENTIAL to become a master director, perhaps, given more opportunity, even surpassing Hitchcock! The Night Of The Hunter is certainly at the ranks of Citizen Kane!

  • great set piece!!!

  • One of my favorite films ever - but the book was even better.

Does anyone know what became of the adorable little boy from the film?

  • Well I just saw this movie and I think it's absolutely beautiful.. But scary? No, not at all scary.. Intriguing, yes

  • INCREDIBLE SCENE ...WOW !!!!

  • Thanks for the high quality upload. I'm using this as an example for the film class I teach, and I can't tell you how nice it is to have these crisp, clear clips

  • One of the most beautiful and horrifying films ever made, this scene is a prime example of that. A masterpiece that is truly timeless.

  • I watched this in my 7th grade language class a few days ago& we thouqht it was freakin awesome. It'll keep you on the edge of your seat!

  • This is a classic screenplay by James Agee -- his other is Bogart and Katherine Hepburn in "The African Queen."

    +

It's the only movie Charles Laughton directed; working with Agee soured him on ever directing again.

    *

Davis Grubb's novel about the Great Depression in the Ohio River Valley, is also a superb read.

    *

Mitchum never got scarier than this. But Gish, the first silent movie superstar, electrifies the movie, her Good is the perfect match to Mitchum's Evil.

  • 5/19/13 Expect us

  • This film has a very classic creepiness. The scene where Mitchum chases the kids with his hands out can only be described as a perfect boogieman look.

  • LYRICS!!!! NOW!!!

  • awh man i have this stuck in my mind!

  • Comment removed

  • This is one of my absolute favorite movies, and this is my favorite part. In my opinion, it's the creepiest movie scene ever.

  • what actor can sing as good as bob mitchum nowadays none!!! my favorite song I saw this on the 4;30 movie 1971

  • there's something inherently creepy about a lone preacher singing a hymn.

  • watch this for my critical media exam for english everyone like it.. especially Robert Mitchum singing :D

  • and so why are we scared, she's on our side and has the loaded gun? but mitchum plays the role of a sociopath with such power...this part was made for him.

  • Do you have Bringing in the Sheaves?

  • I love this 'sing-off' its so smart!

  • I think this is the only piece Laughton directed for the screen.

  • The best hymn ever - sung by the scarriest preacher ever. Well, in movies anyway.... If you like the movie, read the book to get the backstory on Mitchum's character.

  • Fantastic film. I first watched it as part of my Film Studies course a few years ago and it was the best out of every one we watched.

  • when she walks up with candle at 1:31 you can barley see him get of the stump and make his way towords the house

  • I love this part-

    where they both sing together.

  • Are they singing together, or against each other?

  • together but she`s religious in a good sense, whereas he uses it to kill people.

  • Comment removed

  • excellent lessons to learn

  • The part where they both sing is priceless.

  • lol it kills em bc she want to hamr him lol but she sings haha

  • Mitchum loved to sing.

  • and in this instance,he does it well.

  • I watched this is Turner Classic Movies. I've not seen too many movies that were as suspensful as this one. When John and Pearl were docked after a night of sailing, I expected Powell to be standing over them. This movie is a masterpiece, there's just no other way to describe it.

  • @ukcat54 Good mornin', children.

  • We watched this in my pitch-black English class.

When it got to the part when he steps on the cat, we all screamed!

    Amazing movie.

  • An epic masterpiece.

  • One of the greatest movies ever made

  • Only Lillian could show so much in silhouette - the tension, the fear, the readiness.

  • ehhhh soooo creeeepyyy..

  • Great film shame they dont make them like that any more.

  • I heard someone was remaking this a few months ago. I was never happier to hear that something was a rumor lol.

  • "It's a hard world for little thing". If Charles Laughton realized that himself, he may have made more amazing movies like this one.

  • @xswqaz1

shame they dont make them like that anymore? what do you mean? they make better films these days and I am not talking about the filming-equipment or special effects... just look at the amateurish cuts (the james-bond-hole-zoom when the children are in the cellar), the too obvious references to biblic events and persons, the unnatural looking zoom at the beginning from the helicopter and the rather teatrical/gestical than realistic acting (which remained from the silent film era).

  • @CondomCorruption You don't know anything about filmmaking. "Night of the Hunter" is one of the best, most well shot films ever made. The photography was truly masterful. Its DOP SHOULD have won an Oscar.

  • @CondomCorruption I think it reminds you of the silent film era due to its influence of German Expressionism and use of the surreal. All of those strange camera movements are meant to give the impression of something creeping in the shadows. The acting is outdated, but it was the mid 50s. Method acting had not even graced the cinema world yet, so one must take into context the type of film this was for its day. The direction and symbolism of this film were visionary.

  • + *****

  • I remember my dad seeing this back in the mid '50s and thought the movie was great.

Certainly a minority opinion by the ridicule and scorn it got by Reviewers of the time---

So much for anything they knew!!

  • great cinematography. love this motion picture. love this duet. hehee

  • This part of the movie really gives me goose bumps... Great story, setting and acting.

  • Even though she's in her 60's at this point in her career, she's still got that luminous beauty of her youth. She's also great in this movie because she kicks the bad guy's a--!

  • I agree. She remained radiant. Her acting in this film is awesome.

  • Great movie, if you haven't seen it yet, rent it.

    =^,,^=att

  • never saw it before tonight on tcm.

    1. My new favorite Mitchum movie.

    2. "Raising Arizona" ripped 'em off - "hard world for little things"

    3. Sideshow Bob copied the knuckle tatts.

  • this is a great movie. Have it on dvd and am watching it on tcm right now. It does show how money can corrupt and bring all kinds of trouble with it. It is so worth watching.

  • her silhouette and the candlelight flooding the shot are the most shocking! good ol charlie.

  • oh, man...my favorite scene in a GREAT movie. Still gives me the chills...

  • if i had a cell phone, this would be my ring tone

  • I found the singing duet oddly beautiful.

    Creepy, but beautiful.

  • Comment removed

  • By far one the most underrated movies you will ever see.

The lighting is second to none

  • The lighting is half the movie. It really helps set a tone for the film.

  • This first rate film is a good reminder of those who profess the faith are not always what they appear to be.

  • I belive it is about how money can corrupt and turn good people into monsters.

(Let's say this guy is a Judas preaching the Word )

  • This was based on a true story, the killer pretended to have scruples but wasnt pretending to be an actual preacher.

  • That would make sense, as I recall Mitchum found out about the money while he was in prison indicating he already was a sociopath and not a preacher transformed by the knowledge of the money.

  • Mitchum's character professes to be a preacher, he assumes the role of the spiritualist, acting as the literal "wolf in sheep's (or shepherds) clothing".

Lillian Gish's character is the actual spiritualist, her spirituality is evident in her course of actions, rather than her words and appearance.

  • He can really sing!

  • well...yaa hes a singer. duhh !

  • great movie-a new generation has to know it

  • ummmm...

  • Lillian Gish is Legendary

  • this is one of the best and scariest movies ever made. Lillian Gish, Robert Mitchum and Shelley Winters are excellent.

  • @blancface i just love the use of light and shadows in this film, a master class in film production.

  • @an5200 agreed!!!!
