Canary Gruberova, Lardserrat Fatallé, La Stupida, Off-KeyAnna Netrebko wished they could sing this assoluta role like onlye Callas could; and the only way Tebaldi could sing this was if she was in one of her dreams.
Yes, we were very lucky to have heard her live then. This and several other performances that I was fortunate enough to have seen were life shattering experiences which I will never forget.
Callas is the only one I've heard who doesn't scream her way through this aria. This is probably one of the most demanding mad scenes and she still sounds settled and glorious in this finale, which usually sounds frantic and forced!!
@jgdmol4l If you had said this about some of the later Callas performances, I would agree, but here in 1957, she's rock solid. The coloratura is phenomenal, every single one of the many trills is true and perfect and alive, and the final high C is touched perfectly effortlessly. I don't think we'll hear singing of this greatness in our lifetimes.
@Shahrdad So true, and .. if you listen to a variety of the sopranos attempting this caballetta, you will find that NONE OF THEM, sing all the trills, with such accuracy.. and cleanliness. This is rock solid Callas, and exciting too.. ( she does not transpose the line up to make it more comfortable, instead, she puts out a wall of sound in the range the piece is written in.. ( she had the voice).
It's wonderful to hear a real dramatic soprano sing this - and one with such fantastic musicianship and expression. Callas is to this day unrivaled in this repertoire.
There seems to be a curse... no soprano could sing this aria properly ever after. I am not a Callas inconditional worshiper, but it is clear that there are two arias: this one and Mozart's "Marten aller Arten" that couldn't be sung again as they should . So if one wants to hear these 2 arias well sung, one has no other way that to hear these old bad sounded recordings by Callas.
that sheer understanding of the music... and perfect mastery of the concept.. and total gift and Godgiven HOLD on the voice.... just made the perfect moment.
Thank you for having that excerpt from Anna Bolena..Callas is UNIQUE in this role...Nobody can do beter than Callas....many have been trying, but very little can approach Callas here !!!!!
This cabaletta, without embellishment is interesting just the way it was written. i see no reason for modern day sopranos to take such liberty with it.
What a voice! Maria Callas was a marvelous bel canto singer and she set the bar high for the sopranos who took on the genre after her - Sutherland, Caballe, Sills, etc. Callas could sing anything that was Italian and dramatic. Really it all goes back to Callas and her contribution to the opera
You are right, mainly with the technique that is being taught today so the students can sing until they are 110. At universities they make dramatic voices sing Mozart to "tame" them down in volume and size=castrating a potential dramatic or who know voices on this level. Most teachers today cannot (do not know how) to deal with a dramatic voice, they freak out, they think it is gonna ruin their vocal chords etc... it's too sad. I cannot hear anyone today but the golden age ones! SAD but true!
Thus is simply phenomenal. I adore Gencer, Sutherland, Caballe and SIlls - but Callas here is a woman possessed. SHE IS BOLEYN! - And those trills!!!! They're not a vocal exercise - they are part of Anna's human tragedy: her descent into death as she ascends the scaffolding to her execution. Every time I hear this recording, I'm drained! It's as if she has channeled Anna! VIVA CALLAS!! Unica e divina!
I just listened to about five other famous sopranos do this piece. None even came close to this. And now I'm wondering why I didn't go straight to Maria...
This was intense and great. You should people listen also to Beverly Sills singing this. I'm not saying it's better/worse than Maria's -- just it's different and as good as it possibly can be sung.
I agree wholeheartedly!!! Sills owned Donzetti's 3 Queens while she was singing. Callas' greatness lies in her ability to get at the heart of the music in the way that sopranos of the 19th century did. Magnificant!!!!
Listening to this Anna and then the Sutherland version i couldn't believe the over inflated comments peaple where giving Sutherland. They seem to put her on this elaborate pedestool all the time even when she obviously stinks it's sickening and so phony.
It is not just about the voice, it's is the emotion that this voice mediates. This is not simply a vocal perfection, this is the most tremendous feeling, which opera should actually be. Maria, with you art is forever gone!

Gracias Maria Callas!
What a performance! Callas was unstoppable as Anna and, I would add, remains incomparable in this role. I never tire listening to the La Scala performance on CD with Guillieta Simionato as Giovanna. Viva Callas!
Callas will always be my all time favorite. Period. Viva La Divina!
That being said, I still also have to say that I also love Sills in this opera as well. TOTALLY different from La Callas, and yet still magificent it its own right.
I had the fortune to talk in person with Leonie Rysanek who attended a Callas Bolena at LaScala and Miss Rysanek told me that when Callas started to sing, Ghiringelli looked at her (Rysanek) both in the same box, because La Callas was in dreadful voice

Perfect Bel Canto style, phenomenal inner rhythymic pulse, fabulous dramatic intention, flawless pronunciation, thrilling forward motion and incredible phrasing with awesome dynamic gradations, and this is a live performance! Few singers get to me the way this woman does, and she has been dead for thirty years!
Yup - forward motion - a superb description of her dynamics. Eventually one feels that she is in charge of the music, the conductor and showing the composer how it should be done!! Tremendous. Astute contribution from you, Billyguns, thanks.
All those who have heard this scene, but never with all the trills, there is this cabaletta to listen to. Every trill is done flawlessly, in full-voice, and full of the drama it's meant to convey. She will remain untouchable in this repsertoire.
Shimmering, perfect portamenti and unafraid to dig into the chest: this is the Callas I love and worship. She is supremely untouchable in this repertoire!!
Wow! Yet another triumph for Maria! She is so amazing! There isn't anyone who can (nor will there probably ever be) match this type of singing. She is truly the greatest! Thanks for posting this video, and I love your choice of pictures! Brava Maria!!!
Wow! I am speechless! That was awesome! I just love how Maria sings and how she is always so expressive. That is why she is the greatest! Thanks for posting this and I love your choice of pictures, Maria is so beautiful!

Yup - forward motion - a superb description of her dynamics. Eventually one feels that she is in charge of the music, the conductor and showing the composer how it should be done!! Tremendous. Astute contribution from you, Billyguns, thanks.

Maria! No one can ever come close to your perfection! This phrase, these adorations, this timbre - the one and only perfection in this art!

My absolute favorite rendition of this cabaletta! I've never heard anyone bring such passion and contrasting emotions to this music.

What can we say? Nothing, One can just listen and be hypnotized by her magic...10/10!!! Maria, You're the greatest!!

Truly, one of La Divina's finest and greatest. This type of singing is, in fact gone.

Yes, truly. This is one of her greatest performances and greatest triumphs.

Grazie belcantismo!
