  • Wow....never realized just how great 80's Kansas sounded!

  • P.S Leftoverture is the first rock and roll album I ever purchased with my own money in my life. (;

  • Wow this is horrible...please someone tell me this a different band from the days of Carry on my wayward sun!!?? NOOoooooooo..........!!! No really this is the worst song I've ever heard in my life. Is this what happens when people start believing in silly stories from the desert, changing rocks into bread, etc, etc??

  • @ScrapMetalBomb

I respect your opinion, but if you don't like this song, then why are you watching this video?

  • @trucker274 Only because I LOVE so much of what Kansas has done in the past. This is a huge disappointment to me, to see brilliant musicians in decline. It happens all the time, guys get so big that they forget how they did it in the first place. That said I owe a lot to these guys and have huge respect for them but they need to be called out on this one. I sing for Scrap Metal Bomb ( video on my page) You probably wouldn't like my stuff either but it's just an opinion. LONG LIVE KANSAS!!

  • lol every one griping and argueing, just chill and enjoy. Dont forget to throw in Brad Delp as one of the greatest vocals of the time! Love Steve and them all, thanks for so many memories:)

  • great band.

  • The Steve Walsh of today sounds nothing like the one from Kansas's glory years. I do like this song but this ain't Steve Walsh imo.

  • @bucky468 This is from 1988, not today........And I'd argue that Power and ITSOT contains some of his best stuff.

  • @dchris24 His voice sounds much different than it did back in 1980. What happened to his voice?

  • @bucky468 Cocaine.

  • @markjroberts43 Walsh was a coke addict? Is that what you're trying to say?

  • All their stuff starting in 1986 was great. You don't hear these songs like the ones they had back in the 1970s.

  • great singer!!!almost the best grtz

  • gay ballad

  • @tacomonster98 If this is gay, apparently you're a flaming homo for checking it out, douche....Go back to your mom's basement, she needs some more meth cooked.

  • @tacomonster98 Do u know anyting about music?

  • I saw Kansas in 1991 when they had Steve Morse on guitar. Steve Morse did the opening set with his band and then played the Kansas set. Blistering guitar. They didn't do ANYTHING from this album, nor did they two more times in the '90s when I saw them. The only "oddity" was "Wheels," which is on the box set. Walsh's voice may be shot, but look at how long he's been at it.

  • Steve's eyes look so sad in this video....so sad.

  • come on steve tour chicago.

  • I wonder if he got paid money to include the word "rumblefish", which is clearly not a word meant for lyrics..LOL.

  • @debbiechickie5 its the fact that they could fit a word like that in there lyrics instead of oh baby oh baby

  • @debbiechickie5 He didn't because he didn't write the song, unfortunately. Great lyrics, and definitely something Walsh WOULD write.

  • @debbiechickie5 LOL! Not only was "rumblefish" included, but it was sung in a very convincing Elmer Fudd voice. No offense, Steve. You're still my favorite and always will be.

  • Isn't this a similar sound to what is so popular today with Daughtry, nickelback and 3 doors down?

  • @shire2005 um. no.

  • @shire2005 Not in terms of vocal ability. Walsh is incredible! Go to this song:

    Kansas i can't cry anymore.

  • Marvellous

  • @ts8586 the sounded spot on

  • wow. this is a beautiful song. never heard it before.

  • I just saw Kansas a few weeks ago and they played this song. They announced it was the very first time they ever played it live!!!!

  • @baconstealer1 I heard!! Damn, I hope I can see them this year...

  • Saw Kansas during this concert tour and Walsh's voice was still as great as ever. (In fact, through the 1990s, during the beginning of any concert tour, Steve's voice was still Right On. 200 gigs a year, along with smoking and drinking and whatever did finally take its toll. No opera singer could have survived all of that.

  • Best band I ever heard!:)

  • Walsh is the greatest rock vocalist EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I agree with dcrhis, Walsh could only be rivaled with Perry.

Coverdale??? don´t make me laugh!!! Take a listen to what`s on my mind, I´ts you, and On the other side. If you still think Coverdale is better you must have suffered some severe brain damage!

  • I guess your just not mature enough to exchange opinions without name calling. Oh well, I should have known but greatest rock vocalist ever. Thats really pushing it But you know what they say opinions are like aholes everybody has one.

  • i agree - waay too much of that "if im not into something everyone who is, is stupid"

  • Nice veneers

  • As much as I liked Walsh I really dont think he can be compared to Coverdale. In some ways its 2 different types of music. All you really have to do is listen to Still of the Night and its over.

I am more of a Kansas fan than a whitesnake fan and really not into the whole on line debate/comparison thing.

Both are great musicians in their own right. Walsh played a great keyboard as well. I saw Kansas about 2 years ago and walsh was shot vocal wise.

  • Whoa.....Seriously? While I'll agree that they are 2 different vocalists, no way can you compare "Still of the Night" with a Walsh song. Yes, Walsh is shot at this point in time, but in his hey day, he was up there with Perry.....Leave it at different types of vocalists........Walsh in his prime could only be rivaled by Perry with HIS STYLE...Coverdale had his own.

  • Kansas Albums are so cool

  • And what has Syracuse done since?

  • Championship basketball and the band Kansas are whatsup.

  • A great song from an underrated CD!

  • My fav Kansas LP.... ever.

  • 1 of a Kind Voice. = 1 of a Kind Band.

KANSAS NEW DVD LIVE in August :

    " There's Know Place Like Home." K ?

  • what a great voice!!! tell me who was better during that time??

  • There was none better than Steve Walsh! I love him!

  • I thought his vocal from the next album(spirit of things) was as good as ever if not a little different. Then on glassolalia it was magic!

  • This song has quite a spirit.Christ...Godspeed*

  • man, the fretless bass on this song...raises the fur on my arm.

  • As for the comments about Steve's voice... age is always a factor in any vocalists career. Steve gave 100% all the time and stretched his voice night after night. That has more to do with the sound than anything. Cigaretts are by far the worst thing for you voice and lungs. How many singers smoke? He's still a great musician period. That's what counts. I defy anyone to sing as well as he did. He had it when he needed it.

  • :How many singers smoke?"

Tons...including Freddie Mercury when he was in the studio. Just sayin.....

  • david coverdale while singing and recording his songs in the studio. bet they can do that?

  • Who is they? Walsh did it plenty, and I'll take him over Coverdale in his prime anyday.

  • Any band who wants to eat has to have commercial appeal. 8 minute songs don't get played on the radio. ITSOT is a great album. Walsh says it's his favorite. Certainly one of the best Kansas albums, at least in the top 4 or 5.

  • Kansas is an awesome band. My daughter, also had an opportunity of seeing them, front row, center, when she was 4 years old. She loves Kansas, especically Carry On! Anyway, Kansas is a very positive band!!! Thanks for sharing this song!!!

  • I will stand beside this band of players anyday...

  • guess it shows diversity and being able to change with the times. what kind of crap are you listening to these days?

  • A real gem, definitely not in the traditional vein of the "classic Kansas sound". In the Spirit of Things was made in the late 80s, a time where 70s classic rock music simply wasn't happening. Notwithstanding, Kansas managed to come up with one of its best, yet more under-appreciated releases. Steve Walsh's soulful and pasionate singing here is breathtaking.

Walsh's solo album Glossolalia is also one of the best kept secrets in music. It takes a while to get it, just like the best music does

  • So WELL SAID Rockberto! Your comments about ITSOT are just right on...couldn't have said it better (and I am known to GO ON and ON ;-) )

As for Glossolalia, I had the same reaction to it...just a masterpiece...and so underappreciated except by those of us patient enough to let it really sink in...OK, so now here I go...cueing up 'Heart Attack'...you have GOT to LOVE Mike Slammer's playing. Don't even get me started on 'Streets'... ;-)

  • tell your daughters to go back to their Hannah Montana. lol Today's genenration wouldn't know musical talent if it squated over their face and , well you know.

  • Thanks. My college age daughters were brought up on the original Kansas LP's. My younger one is 21, and prefers Cream and Pink Floyd to anything else.

  • My apologies. I thought you were saying Kansas in general was meh. There is way too many who don't know true talent.

  • You're a good parent, jopinofcabra! Congrats to you!!! My own daughter saw her first Kansas concert at age 3 (don't worry, it was an outside festival concert!) and she still loves Kansas above all others! Rock on to you and your daughters!

  • For all you Walsh fans, You need to get your hands on his CD release from last year call "Shadow Man". It's the best Rock I've ever heard and the man can still sing his ass off!!!!!

  • It amazes me that 20 yrs have already come & gone since I went to see these guys play when they came out on this album tour. Palace Theater, Albany NY

  • This tune makes Windows sound like Song For America. (wink)

  • I love Kansas. This is a great song....

    Steve Walsh is awesome....

  • KANSAS RESPECT

  • Isn't Morse in this video "Stand Beside Me"? I think he's the blonde guy that we see a time or two. I was thinking that this was the last Kansas Album that Morse was a part of.

  • Yes, that's Steve Morse. He joined Kansas for the "Power" album and left afert "In The Spirit Of Things", the album this tune's from. They asked him to join and he said he would when Steve Walsh came back. He left because he felt too confinded guitar stylewise.

  • Song writing of the highest order! One of my favourites from In the spirit of things.

  • I agree with you....so good song writing...unbelievable

  • I loved this cd, "In the Spirit of Things." Vastly underrated.

  • This single was out at roughly the same time Cheap Trick's "The Flame" was. That song went to #1 pop while this one reached #13 rock. I feel I should've been a much bigger hit. Someone pointed out though that A&M were too focussed on Tiffany to really get behind Kansas. It's too bad. "Once In A Lifetime" is another song off of In The Spirit Of Things that could've been a monster single. I mean it's way better than anything White Lion was putting out.

  • Was this around the time Walsh was getting strung out on drugs? he looks skinny and emaciated here and I know that on the 1992 performance "Live at the Whiskey" he was wasted! He was still able to sing his ass off but sometimes looked and sounded a little silly. Glad he got his shit together!

  • Kansas' Stand Beside Me is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

  • By far the best song from that album was "The Bells of St. James." They never made a video for that one? That could have been their next "Carry On."

  • Without a doubt, "bells of St. James" was the best song from the "In the Spirit of Things" album. I wish there was a video for that one. I never knew there was a video for "Stand Beside Me". This is a very underrated album.

  • one of the bands favorite albums also, as far as walsh, williams and ehart. all kansas music is severerly underated.

  • one of my fav projects after Kerry Livgren left the band

  • I love this song, from my very favourite Kansas album. AMAZING music.

  • Hey all Kansas fans. Is there a video to the song Wheels? The track was issued on one of their box sets. One of my favourite songs.

  • Walsh's voice, though not what it used to be, can still sound pretty good as long as he doesn't wear it out. I think he sounded great on the DVD. And I've seen them about 5 times in the last 5 years. On a few nights, it sounded worn out. But on two it sounded as good as it did on the DVD.

  • He gave us the loud scream, singing, grit, yelling, emotion, we asked for. With 30 plus years-tours, plus STREETS tour, his vocal cords paid the price. He still has GREAT days & very good. We age too.

They push 70-100 shows per year, as they signed the worst contract, in R & R HISTORY. (Except CCRevival)

    Cheers. K still ROCKS 2007 !

  • great song i hear it so long as i can

  • Obviously your kickass and my kickass aren't the same. I still enjoy listening to him alot and I wouldn't say that if he couldn't sing. So maybe I exaggerated in one direction but you certainly went the whole 9 yards in the other direction and I have to respectfully and wholeheartedly disagree with you!

  • Walsh was obviously worn thin(literally)from drug use. It was no big secret that he had a problem for a while but recovered nicely and then became a fitness nut.The guy is 56! so all you naysayers should cut him some slack. He still kicks ass!

  • No he doesn't kick ass any longer he can't sing.

He was a fitness nut long before the 1990s.

  • sad that they were reduced to that

  • hear hear

  • "In The Spirit of Things" was a great album! These guys are and have been my "All Time Favorite" band. Going to see them tonight at Sunset Station in Henderson, NV. Loved them, then AND now!

  • Wow...I haven't heard this song in 15 years. Hopefully I'll get to wait another 15...

  • I so love this too!! Ghosts and Bells of St. James are really great songs as well.

  • anymore videos from Vinyl confessions, drastic measures, power, or in the spirit of things!

  • Super! Comme tout ce que produit kansas!

  • OMG

    I LOVE THIS SONG

In The Spirit Of Things is Kansas' best album

    everything is so perfect

  • I loved this whole cd! Never saw this on MTV, didnt know there was a video for it. Would love if that had a video for rainmaker!

  • How did Steve Walsh get so darn skinny in the 80's.He looks like a bag of bones almost. Was it the drugs he was doing. He was a much bigger guy in the 70's. All the Kansas guys were...except for Phil Ehart.

  • You're right, I think the drugs had begun to take their toll by now. His eyes are sunken in, jawline is very sharp/bony, his face is drawn. Look at his videos from the 70's & early 80's, his eyes are wide, face & jawline are fuller and softer. He either went on a huge crash diet or it was the drugs, and he is open about the lifestyle he led during that phase. A real shame. He has/had probably the best voice in modern music. Kids-don't do drugs!!

  • we all stumble in life, and to pass judgement on steve walsh is just flat out wrong. i believe it was more an image change at the time, the 80's everyone, was trying to blaze into a new direction. i'm sure walsh had his share of drugs in his lifetime but that does not make him a bad person. and yes, i agree kids stay away from drugs as they can sometimes make you see reality and we would not want that. rock on..........

  • No passing judgement, I don't think Steve is a bad person. You read entirely too much into my posting. However, the facts are that he had his demons during that time period-he does not hide it. And it is a fact that drugs will change your appearance in the ways I described earlier. Obviously he has moved on and is living clean now--he'a a good role model in that respect. BTW, what does this mean? "drugs...can sometimes make you see reality and we would not want that" ???

  • His voice was starting to change too. Maybe it was just age and the years of touring at this point, but later, the coke messed his throat up and he needed surgery to fix it. Check out the Live at the Whiskey videos for an example of what coke did to Steve and his voice. I'm sure glad he rose above it and conquered his addiction.

  • It was his throat? I heard it was his nasal passages were destroyed. He always sounds like he has a cold. I guess maybe a combination of both. He had a great voice, but I've gotten used to his voice now and it's not so bad.

  • Maybe the coke hadn't affected his voice yet here but he was definitely on it at this point! Look how thin he is in this video! It's almost scary!

  • @rickyon This is when he was teaching step aerobics.

  • @debbiechickie5 He was really teaching aerobics?

  • @AxonHilock LOL.no. :)

  • @debbiechickie5 Haha, somehow I don't think I'd be very surprised if he was, he seems like a deep, interesting guy from what I've gathered. I wasn't even near alive in the '70's to be able to see Steve Walsh in his prime or know his whole story, but I still want to meet him, and talk about life...

  • Cool, never saw that one before, don't know if there were other videos from ITSOT.

  • I wonder if they ever made a video for "The Bells of St. James" which clearly is the best tune they did during the Morse era.
