@MrHockey691 Sorry, but you are wrong. The remaining Japanese air power had been removed in January 1945 and moved to other locations, I believe Taiwan and Okinawa. Thee were a few aircraft left for kamikaze strikes but these were destroyed by TF 58 sweeps weeks before the invasion.

The wanted the airfields for fighters to escort bombers to Japan and for bombers returning that couldn't make it back to the Marianas.

Sorry, no airpower on Iwo.

i dont think it was very smart of the Japanese General to let the entire American Army get on the beaches b4 they started firing..not smart at all..especially with only 86,000 men against 122,000 battle hardened Americans..

@barats1 It's really a smart move in my opinion. Since they have limited supplies, the element of surprise becomes their greatest weapons. Letting the American troops pile up in highly-concentrated numbers on the beaches before firing simultaneously from multiple angles of attack. Plus, the numbers of Japanese on Iwo Jima was around 18,000 men.

@barats1 actually it was very smart because it funneled them into a kill zone. This way the sand would slow down the infantry. It also allowed the element of suprise for the Japanese. And it also gave the Americans less time to spot artillery positions and muzzele flashes.

Your also forgetting the fact the Japan had been at war far longer then America and that it was the Japanese who were more battle hardened. The Americans biggest advantage was numbers and resources.
