It touch a defender and then the offense can catch it, but not too offensive players in a row. That's the whole controversy about the Immaculate Reception - did Franco Harris catch it after it bounced off a Raider defender or was it another Steeler?
Yes. In the early 70s this was illegal. The rules have since changed. This is what the immaculate reception was about. It occurred on Dec 23 1972 and if the pass did hit Jon Frenchy Fuqua it would have been a dead play. That is the controversy.
