Also using the ball of your foot to attack can be quite effective maybe like a punch. Your legs are alot more powerful then your arms so if your accurate and fast you really dont need to be that strong because if you aim at the jaw or artery you dont need that much force. Also I'm sure hes not kicking it that hard or fast because that his method of teaching.
Ball of the foot requires less conditioning than shins (lots of nerves) and is safer than instep (lots of small bones). You have to kick your target at an angle though. E.g. you can't line parallel with a wall and expect to kick directly with the ball without establishing major flexibility in the foot. Angle away a little bit first and try hitting.
TKD roundhouse is fast but weaker. Muay thai is stronger but slower. I like to think this as a good mix of both. Good to know all 3 though
Wow there sure are so many damn haters on youtube. If your wise you will just be grateful to learn new techniques in different ways. I'm currently taking judo and I hear different ways to to different throws pins etc. not evey one technique is going to be done the same way. Also you can't judge a martial arts based off one guy because its the individual that is doing the martial arts that going to determine how good it is.
In a roundhouse kick, it would appear from just casually observing that most of the initial force goes outward away from the body. Wouldn't a more efficient kick be the straight side kick where the force is directed in a straight line?
True, but when you are in that close, the side kick would be tough to pull off. It requires your bent knee to come up in front of you. If I'm wrong, let me know. It's been `14 years since I took a Soo bahk do class.
straight strikes (kicks and punches) have similar attributes. the same goes for hooking strikes. straight shots cover the distance quicker and retract faster. curved strikes are sneakier and can slip around a gaurd. both have good points. using both in combination is a good idea.
both have their ups and downs so you should train both. the ball of the foot can hit harder since that part of your foot is naturally stronger and can take more pain. the top of the foot makes the kick reach more, distance kick, i usually use it during sparring matches.

also, this is a very bad example of a round kick. this guy does NOT deserve his belt.

what's ur opinion on using this kick and kicking with the top of the foot rather than the ball?
