  • I was using windows live movie maker, and when I first imported it it didn't work... then it after like a minute it started working, but it was choppy, and now it's normal. IDK what happened, but this was helpful.

  • Bro i cant tell you how happy I am that you posted this. I've been trying to finish my sponsorship for awhile now and i couldn't send my video in it's original form. You saved me on this one. Props to you.

    -Thanks

  • you are one smart puppy--thanks you so much--it saved me $40

  • I can play the files on my computer through this process- i can not, however, get Movie Maker to see that they are video files. It recognizes them as audio files. Any suggestions?

  • it only imports video

  • If you use a Mac, use Handbrake to convert the MOD files to m4v files, using the NTSC framerate (23.x FPS). Then open the files in Quicktime and export the file as a MOV file. It's a long process, but it's the only solution I found without paying for software or compromising on quality.

  • G'day @jpraab That comment was more helpful than the other 5 videos I've watched trying to work out this .mod dilemma. Thanks mate!!!

  • @k1tchify I asked a lot of videophiles about this problem. Most of them had no idea what I was talking about, and all these tutorials require you to buy something or produce an inferior quality.

  • @jpraab Sir, I belive you are the smartest person in the world right now, HOLY SHIT...

Thank you so much! I have tried everything. Honestly i was going to go to go to best buy and buy whatever they had there to get this done... Finally an easy (oh and did i mention FREE) solution! WOW, thanks agian... :)

  • @ufcfan96 No problem, guys! This took me about 3 hours to figure out. When I tried this solution (or others like it) I kept getting horrible quality degradation. A friend suggested I try Handbrake, and I finished out the process using Quicktime. Pass the word on!

  • thanks :)

  • Thank you thank you thank you!!!!! Yes, everyone's hating cause you went the long way to tell us to change the file name but if you hadn't shown me where the file extension box was I wouldn't have known nor would I have gone ahead with conversion when it said video might be unstable. KUDOS!

  • Dude, thank you so much! I have been flddling around with 4 .mod files for hours. You saved me. Thanks again. kym

  • this is a good video:D it helped alot

  • There is a lot if criticism of this video but at least you said it and others don't bother. They have taken much longer telling you how long you took to tell us all how to do it than you took actually telling us. Well done!

  • How come when i import it unto windows movie maker, it automatically imports as audio/music instead of video?

  • Comment removed

  • thanks. it was a bit helpful. hehe. although the converted file doesn't work on "Windows Live Movie Maker"

  • Thanks mate, very useful!

  • Tried this and it did not work, maybe its because I am running XP Pro, idk. Your vid was useful for others tho.

  • Does Teresa know your using her computer? lol, jk

  • you are awsome :) i can't thank you anymore :) defo subscribed

  • Thank you! Very useful :)

  • God you take so fucking long to say two sentences...

  • JedCrewProduction it dosnt work!!! :C

  • Thanks so much! I was so frustrated because I couldn't find a free converter. Now I feel foolish since this was pretty easy. Ha ha!

  • THNKS!!

  • works fine wish l found this 6 months ago thanks

    nice work.

  • Guy is trying to be helpful and you guys are trashing him. Dont you have some puppies to kick?

Thx for this bud. It was helpful to me.

  • convert it into mp4, then into windows movie maker, then into wmv

  • DUDE this works perfectly in W7, I followed the steps, put it into windows movie maker, then i saved it as a movie in wmv, then it weas good to go, and I could finally import it into adobe after effects :D thanks alot c:

  • This doesn't actually convert the file type. Changing the extension likes this "fools" the software into reading it, but will always end up causing a problem with viewing your video. Download a free .mod converter and don't listen to this video.

  • Thank you so much! Worked great for me in Win7

  • Many thanks, it worked! (windows 7) ;)

  • thanks man it works for me!!

  • Thanks

  • this is RESPECT.... thanks a lot !

  • This is a good trick in principle but it doesn't work if your .mod is in widescreen--the aspect ratio info is lost when you swap, and the image will be squished down to fullscreen.

  • i tried this but it says MOV001.AVI is not a valid Windows Movie Maker project file.

  • Thank you very much, very helpful!!!

  • thanks so much!

  • mine work but when i load it with SOny Vegas it ONly has Video

  • It took him 3 minutes and 40 seconds to say "change the file extension from .mod to .avi"!

  • @JedCrewProductions: please let me know which version of your WIndow movie maker since it does not work for my Window movie maker 2.6

  • @tdandhg you don't need windows movie maker. just change the file extension.

  • Thanks!

  • You need almost 4 minutes to say a sentence: Change the file extension from mod to avi... respect.

  • Worked for me. I have a JVC however.

  • IT DIDNT WORK ON MINE. NO SOUND NO VIDEO.

  • I put it on adobe After Effects but the picture wont show up. What do I do?

  • hello i have a jvc and my files are in moi and i tried the same steps in your video and it still wont work please help me.

  • Thanks bro :D now i can mess with it in after effects

  • @MrSuicidalShoe I use after effects to! I cant use it because I cant get the mod to change to avi :(

  • Doesn't actually work for me, and it seems like it doesn't work for a lot of other people either. Plus, the video is extremely difficult to watch and makes me physically nauseous.

  • Hey buddy thanks you just saved me a bunch of headaches trying to get WLMM to work. All it needed was to change the extension like you did I appreciate it. Take care.

    -Joe

  • Just get a decent free player like VLC or Media Player Classic and you can watch your videos just fine without needing to do anything at all.

If you want to edit them, do yourself a favor and get Sony Vegas or Pinnacle Ultimate. Save up fifty bucks and buy one of those two programs and then you can just drag and drop your MOD file right in the track. It is worth the money to have a full-featured video editor. Relying on Windows Movie Maker for your video editing is way too elementary school.

  • Spot on. Just saved me hours of messing around. Worked first time. Easy peasy. Thanks

  • I really enjoy watching 4 minutes of tutorial video that could have been summarized in four seconds. Two minutes into the video and all you've managed to do is get the file onto the desktop.

  • @tmtigd Don't be a pessimistic douche just thank him, it worked didn't it?

  • will you lose quality

  • Save your self 3.40 minutes.. Just rename the file from "whatever.mod" to "whatever.avi"

  • @Yefatbastard tried that and all it did was sy the files were corrupted

  • @WILKINSTV

Well the good news is, you can just name them back and you are at least right back where you started..

  • Its really awsome - thank you (from Hungary)

  • Thank you. Very helpful. Helped me out of a spot

  • wow it actually work thanks

  • I had to watch 2 minutes of video just to get to the point: change the file extension. What the hell?

  • thank you!! this was perfect

  • It doesnt let me drag it onto windows movie maker.

  • Thanks man.

  • Your not converting the file by doing this..

Take this video down and stop wasting everyone's time with this bullshit..

  • Thanks so much for this it helped me out cause I am doing a Alice: Madness returns nightmare playthru so check out my channel please.

  • The file C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\MOV004.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again. help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks alot man, it worked for me anyway, because cba to spend like £40 on a video converter

  • THANK YOU!!!

  • All you did was rename the file extension. That doesn't convert anything. You can see that you you already had the codex on your system for opening *.MOD files. If you didn't, this wouldn't work for you (or anyone).

My god IF ONLY renaming a file extension actually converted files!! That would be GREAT! But, of course it doesn't work like that.

  • @courtneysfoster It worked for me.

  • i have a fs300 and this didnt work when i imported it there was no picture or audio.

  • works real good. Genius

  • thanks so much. worked perfectly.

  • the conversion works but WMM says "...could not be imported. An interface has too many methods to fire events from"

  • This is bad advice. You cannot simply rename a .mod file into .avi and have it work. Movie Maker is reading the file headers to determine the type of file and ignoring the .avi extension.

.MOD files use MPEG-2 video and AC3 audio. (You would be more correct renaming it to .mpg or .m2v) Movie Maker supports MPEG-2 so it is able to open the file as long as it is named with a supported file extension--whether it's correct or not.

You have not converted the file!

  • Please retitle your video to "How to Rename a File"

  • STOP SHAKING THE FUCKING SCREEN WHEN YOU ARE NOT DOING SOMETHING!!!!! OMG!

you stupid kid! Stablizeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee and why is ur audio different? step ur game up

  • Wonderfully simple - thank you for sharing!

  • Cheers Mattey :)

  • THIS IS AMAZING! YOU JUST RENAME THE FILE AND ITS AN AVI AND CAN BE EDITED IN MOVIE MAKER.

    THANK YOU FOR POSTING!

  • Thank You SO much! I have been looking for something like this and knew there was an easier solution than what I have been doing! You are awesome!

  • OMG... way too easy

  • the video lost quality :(

  • thank you very much friend! lets see if the image quality is the same

  • Thank you this worked great! Nice tip.

  • HAY THANKS THAT WAS REALLY HELPFULL

  • wat version of movie maker u using?

  • For me it dosen't work

  • I converted it, but when I tried to copy it to Windows Movie Maker, this was the error message that I got: MarciandLisa1.AVI could not be imported. An interface has too many methods to fire events from any suggestions?

  • I followed instructions. this didn't work for me either. I got audio, but no video. I have windows XP. any suggestions?

  • IT WORKS!!!

  • ok. i was able to change my .mod to a .avi but when i dragged it to my window's movie maker and hit play, there was no video, just audio. can u help me out? :)

  • @drawfreak instead of using the timeline got to show storyboard. add the video to it and then go back to timeline and it will show the video

  • @drawfreak movie maker already supports .mod files, u don't have to change it. :)

  • @StealthyHax No it isn't, I just tried and the file wasn't even viewed when I wanted to import. I tried dragging it and it wouldn't allow.

  • @drawfreak Same Here...

  • @drawfreak Use VLC Media Player tons better than WMP

  • @drawfreak

Yeah.. sounds like you don't have the right codec's..

  • thank you so much!

it really helped me a lot!

    (:

  • Thanks, this really helped me help my son who we just gave a cannon Vidcam to for a present.

  • Excellent! Thanks JedCrewProductions.

  • Great, many thanks for this just have to rename loads of files!!

  • Thanks!

  • Doesn't work for me. Do I need to download special codecs?

  • IDIOTS.....Everything is about renaming files...Even kids know how to rename files!

The big question is how to convert it!

  • @Bobysoftco Then you loose the quality.

  • excellent, thank you.

  • thaaaaaank u:D :D :D

  • Thank you! Easiest way!

  • thank you!! super helpful!

  • yep mine says that the file is still not right. uhm... help? i got a "music video" due in two days and i cant upload my videos to movie maker

  • @cjxshortcake Try using prism video converter.

  • @cjxshortcake Try using prism video converter or avs converter

  • what about widescreen?

  • MINE SAID THE FILE IS CORRUPT?

  • great video.. thank you for sharing it with us.. how to convert .MOD to .AVI is great.. works for me :)

  • it changed the file but i still didnt get my audio :(

  • Cheers for this mate.

However, for some reason, the audio doesn't play when i try to edit a .mod file in sony vegas pro 8.0. When I use this method to convert the .mod file into an .avi file, the audio still doesn't play. Anyone got any ideas why?

  • .mpg could not be imported. An interface has too many methods to fire events from

  • this doesnt work for me, when i put it into movie maker, it just plays the adio :( can anyone help!!!!!! please!!!

  • dident work:(

  • how do you do that for win7:(

  • thanks for the help mate! ill sub! :D

  • didnt work

  • brilliant thanks dude

  • legend!

  • yea. Really helpful. 9 seconds of film = 10 MB + shit quality. MOD files suck lol. Had JVC for over a year. Worst dollars I have ever spent. I normal video is like 700 MB for approx. hour of video. 9 seconds for 10 MB is fucking bad.

Bravo on figuring out, but this shit is useless like Monica Livinski's testimony

  • THATS MY CAMERA

  • THANKS WORKS LIKE A DREAM

  • Thank you!!!!! Worked for my everio too!

  • when i tried it it had an error box and it said the interface has too many methods to fire from.....wtf

  • You have to be careful with this sometimes; I could get it to work in WMM - which was fine for me since I was instantly publishing raw footage for use in Camtasia Studio (no codec to play file error if I import the "renamed avi"). However on another computer this same process didn't work and I spent hours messing around with converting files, etc. It's just stupid.

  • Legend! Thank you so much... i've just spent an entire day trying to solve this problem, and your video did it within 2 minutes.... You da man!

Thanks buddy all the way from Yorkshire, England

  • Thank you it also works with the jvc eviro camera as well thank you i love you for making this not in a wierd way

  • this didnt work :(

  • Thankyou!! You saved me! I LOVE YOU hahaha :D

  • Thank you , FYI this works for Sony Vegas pro9/ JVC MOD. files also enjoy screw downloading a converter let your pc do what its made to do nice work

  • MOD to avi worked perfectly. Movie maker recognized the converted avi. I tried using Virtual Dub to edit this file and I get an error message pop up. Can you tell me what I can use to edit this file?

  • I just tried this. The icon says it's now an AVI, but Windows Movie Maker won't play it. There's no sound or video or anything.

  • WOW! YOUR AMAZING!

  • Saved my life, man! Thanks a lot!

  • You're awesome!

  • thank you so much! i really needed this! xd

  • haha you could have just said "rename the file extension to .avi"

  • It didn't do it. It just made it into a audio file. No video in windows movie maker :(. Just audio.

  • How do I do all this if I have already changed the file's name before??? Can someone help?

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for taking the time to teach us that. That was very helpful. Cheers!

  • Thanks HEAPS

  • holy shit it works o_O

    THANKS!

  • this the same with a kodak?

  • Dude, I want to say "Thank You". This video was the best. Just got back from vacation and I couldn't edit in Movie maker. I thought I was about to spend an arm & a leg to convert them all !! Keep posting your tips.

Same thing happened to me... Can anyone help out?

  • @zol0001 Me 2, have u found out how to fix it?????

  • @zol0001 Same here, have you found a solution yet?

  • I never converted my MOD videos to AVI and they load just fine on WMM

  • You loose so much quality on the video

  • Thank you! This was very helpful!

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH

i have been trying and trying for months and months and bought converters and then i found god- JedCrewProductions

  • Fuck JVC not only for using the MOD format in the first place but also for just walking away from their customers and leaving them to figure out JVC's crap by themselves. I hope the person who made the decision rots in hell. I'll never buy another product from JVC!!

  • Awesome. Thanks.

  • THANKS FROM BUENOS AIRES ARGENTINA I´VE BEEN TRYING TO CONVERT THE FILE WITH TONS OF CONVERTERS FOR HOURS LIKE AN IDIOT HAHA!, YOU JUST SAVED MY DAY! KOOL VIDEO DUDE!
