I love how people complain about other people's music taste being bad, and then they get mad at people likng good music only because some "inferior" artist got them into it. You freaking cynics.
Also he said "we move through open spaces without a sound" which leads me to believe he thinks of himself as something inhuman. He also referred to the moon as the devil, you would be the lightest on the moon and its "in a high place" compared to earth
I beileve the two songs are connected. The songs are speaking on religion(god, heaven, devil, hell,) in and out the songs. No Coincidence. One of my theories is that they beileve they can't "get much higher" on earth because of the devils help. They believe he's the "navigator to heaven"
Great song..btw. all these people who are rambling and arguing are bastardizing the listening experience...the comments section of this video should be turned OFF!
It's weird how people are arguing over who is better, Mike Oldfield or Kanye. I personally like them both. Quite complaining and enjoy, or if not, nobody says you HAVE to watch it, and you HAVE to like it. I've never really liked Madonna... I'm just saying....
I'm not rly a kanye fan but some of his songs r catchy, so after hearing dark fantasies i thought id check this out, its shit. Tell me im wrong if you want, but im not changing my mind on that lol
no music ist better than another, it is always a thing of taste and perspective. Good choice Kanye, that's like a tribute. And Mike & Jon... you rock, like older guys, but you rock.
Just the fact that anyone is comparing kanye west to Mike Oldfield showcases how musically ignorant people are these days. I dont care what your preferences are, but you have got to be a real cloth ear not to recognize the unsurpassable genius and sheer varietal skill of Mikes music.
greatest music producers of all times..1st you have Mike Oldfield, then you have Kanye West, and then you have Lex Luger!!!!!...then theres me....in that order
It really would have been no great loss if Kayne never sampled this song. No offense, but I rather prefer that people who listen to Kayne West, not listen to Mike Oldfield. It brings Mike Oldfield's music down into mindless, mainstream, common ground.
@SuperTruthPrevails Has anyone ever told you you're a total snob? And greedy to boot. "I rather prefer no one gets to hear this great music because they found out about it from some other artist I don't like." Is it so hard to believe that a dude like Kanye likes the same stuff as you?
@peteetep16 What? You really think Kayne is rolling down the street with Mike Oldfield's " High Places" blasting on the stereo. I laugh at you....LOL! Yeah, I know I'm a snob to a certain degree when it comes to likes and dislikes, but I also believe everyone else is too. You just have to probe into our likes and dislikes enough and you'll find the snob in each and every one of us. And, those who would tell you otherwise aren't snobs... They're liars... ;-P
@SuperTruthPrevails haha of course everyone has opinion but you just sound like a jerk. and yes, I actually do think he would listen to this song. after all, he does cite thom yorke, portishead and jon brion as major influences.
@justtogetby23 Oh whatever! Give me a freakin break. He cite's thom youke, portishead, and jon brion because he stole from them too. So many rappers start their songs off by saying the word "Yeah," that it's a cliche nowadays. There's nothing original about that and there's nothing original about Kanye. Don't get mad at the truth.
@SuperTruthPrevails hehe, he's only doing more than you ever have and will do. Besides Brion made an entire album with him, Anderson says "rewarding", Elton John "genius", the list go on. Hell, join President Bush and Obama and the people that don't like him for all I care. But the fact that you're paying so much attention is a compliment in itself
@justtogetby23 Ummm... Maybe you should be paying attention. I came hear to listen to Mike Oldfield's music, not that sorry excuse of a wanna be musician of yours. Is it really a compliment when someone notices you because they can't stand you? Jeezee... You have a really low opinion of yourself and Kanye. I can see why you listen to him.
@SuperTruthPrevails haha I came here to listen to the same song too. "Ironically", I like Oldfield too - what does that make you? Also you're the one who originally detracted attention from Oldfield, not me (i.e. it's odd that you would devote more attention on disliking someone than appreciating an artist you do like)
@justtogetby23 Ummm....How is the fact you like Oldfield too ironic? The fact that I dislike certain forms of music doesn't make me anything but a guy with an opinion. I guess your just not bright enough to realize that and leave it alone. It's odd that you would devote so much time communicating with someone that clearly doesn't share your musical taste and or values. So what! Grow up, get over it, and move on already. This childish behavior is a complete waste of time.
@SuperTruthPrevails "Irony" in scare quotes because it's not truly ironic. Like I said: what does that make you? We happen to share some similar opinions and disagree on others. Big deal, it hardly matters and I don't expect you to agree. What does is when someone is unnecessarily obnoxious and vain (Btw "you're/your" mistake is funny haha). I was just calling you out for being a rude asshole, not for having an opinion
@hellyfornication since when does playing instruments = creative genius and talent? its just good practice, this dude cant put a decent song together worth shit
listen to kanyes beats then listen to this guys beats, kanye is clearly musically superior
@69GUNOT No offense, but to put Kanye West above Mike Oldfield, let alone compare them, is the definition of 'ignorant'. Kanye West has done nothing more than create plastic rap music, with cheat (at best) beats. He can't even write proper lyrics. Mike Oldfield produces real music, with instruments. Heck I TRIED my best to listen to Kanye's 'version' of this, half way in I had to stop it, I was getting worried those 'instruments' (he so 'talent-ley' played) where the grating of my eardrums.
@Kohrote and you think that you saying Kanye makes plastic rap isnt ignorant? Kanyes version made your eardrums bleed ha? no one cares what you think because you just made it painfully obvious youve probably never listened to a hip hop album let a lone a Kanye album, and FYI playing instruments doesnt equal talent, Kanye makes better beats than this guy and thats all that matters
@69GUNOT Sorry, I am not usually such an ugly person. I'm just having a crap day. Look, I am sorry I am such a jerk, truly. I take back what I said, I am just sick of people bashing other people. Kanye is probably a wonderful artist, and being two different people, living in two different countries, we are going to have different opinions about media, etc.

@Kohrote Great job man, you just put your full ignorance on display. You would beat someone up for criticizing a egotistical music artist who doesn't give a rat's ass about you? Come on guy, the wannabe ghetto trash gangster attitude is nothing to be fond over anymore, and smart people will only smile and laugh quietly to themselves while you go on your tirade about how you want to hurt people over their opinions, therefore proving a point to the people who stereotype what you glorify. Be smart

@artstar19 Sorry, English = not my best language. I am certainly not ignorant, I took what I said back because I didn't mean it. I am not usually the type of person who says rude things, so I took it back. What do people want?
@Kohrote I'm glad you know what real music is. If you don't mind, care to tell us all what that is? Clearly you know everything about music, and we--being the lowly fucks that we are--know absolutely nothing. It's too bad your almighty wisdom is being wasted in these YouTube comments.
@Sega716 Okay, so will people shut the fuck up?! Music-wise, enjoy whatever you like, in the real world, learn to read. God.
@Kohrote What I saw was another arrogant YouTube commenter that needed to be knocked down a few pegs. Sorry, but you should know better than to post something like that on YouTube. Yes you are entitled to an opinion...but within that, you have a responsibility to respect everyone else's. I also never said you weren't entitled to your opinion, I just kinda implied that you were making yourself look like a douche.
@Sega716 Besides, people came here and started saying "Oh this guy can't make music because it isn't dance' or 'Kanye West's version is better :P" or "This guy sucks, Kanye's better". My apologies for disagreeing. I have my own opinion, and I am entitled to it. I never said you had to agree, nor did I say I was correct.
@hellyfornication yeahh well those are all computers. you know i even consider kanye as a very talented musician. i just cant stand you saying that mike oldfield isnt talented at all, because he's maybe one of the most talented musicians in a long time. listen to tubular bells, incarnation, hergest ridge if you dont believe
@abstractgenius The real question is whether or not Kanye is actually a musician. Word has it he doesn't even play in instrument. There's an interesting comment Quincy Jones made about Kanye. You should totally look into it!
When I heard "Can we get much higher?" on that Hangover II commercial, my heart sank. It made me realize that Mike Oldfield's genius can be recognized by any musician (even if you dislike sampling/rap as I do, Kanye is a musician), but the labels of prog and new age will prevent his genius from being recognized by the masses. I'm a high school student and all my friends either hate my music or are just off listening to Lady Gaga (not a bad artist, but nowhere near as creative as Oldfield.)
Mike Oldfield co-wrote the song with Jon Anderson, produced the album with Simon Philips and performed the music, where Jon sang. It's very collaborative, more so than Mike's normal method which is to hire singers and musicians to perform what he doesn't do himself. He can sing, but usually prefers getting singers so the song has a particular sound or feel (Maggie Reilly, Bonnie Tyler, Jon Anderson, Roger Chapman, etc.). He views vocals as another instrument, like guitar or bagpipes or flutes.
@eisenmenger14 You're joking right? I mean in Kanye's version he says "Yeah" and we've never heard rappers say the word "Yeah" before....Right? Mike Oldfield is a true artistic genius and that's why Kayne ripped him off.... I mean used that sample. Kanye... I mean Khan... I'm LAUGHING at The Superior Intellect!
Crises is a very listen-able album. I often say CRISES (song) sounds like Tubular Bells Pt III. I think it sounds like Jon Anderson is saying, 'Alligator of Heaven.'
I also wish these people would list the videos as COVER ART ONLY...when they are. Or COVER ART w LYRICS, when they have interesting/changing visuals.
@Sneakerhero He sounds like a guy to me. Maybe it's because I'm really familiar with guys who have feminine, high voices. :D Check out "Always" by Erasure. It's a good song by a guy with a really high voice. He is also mistaken for a woman by some people. Good day.
@Sneakerhero If you're talking about "Dark Fantasy" (the Kanye song that samples this song), both a male (Jon Anderson) and a female singer sing "Can we get much higher?" In this song, "In High Places," there is only a male singer (Jon Anderson). Hope that explains everything.
Man I'm glad I got the opportunity to became an Oldfield fan. You guys and your musical ego stroking sure talk a lot of shit and waste a lot of time doing it. lol Aww fuc now I'm doing it. This is exactly the type of music people back in his time looked down on. Genius is always in the composition.
@WoodRatGirl Yay! I freaked out when I heard it on Dark Fantasy because this is my favorite song by Mike Oldfield and my dad has been playing his music around the house since before I was born. I'm glad you enjoy it :D.
@osbuckeyes95os Everyones entitled to their opinion, but sometimes one must analyze music in order to identify the skill that it took to produce it. I have listened to Kanye West, and I have listened to Mike Oldfield and personally, I believe that the guitar work and his original compositions require more talent to produce and evoke a much more spiritual and satisfying end product than Kanye West's rap. But if Kanyes music makes you happy, then power to you.
@Tubularism1 your dead right. Nothing Kane west could do in a hundred years could in anyway even approache what MO has done and been doing since around 1977 I think. KW just does not have the ability and talent wise is not even on the same planet as MO.
@ramonramos88 synthesizers were being experimented with in the 1950's, mainly in Germany, and were popularized in the 60's with the "Moog" device. Electronica and pop was the main usage, certainly not relegated to rap what so ever as its application there did not occur until later. Mike uses every sound he can possibly make in this world to create his music, just listen to Amarok..
@ farfle 10 Look up my recent album's pieces 'The many faces of' or from the album 'The nightmare of lighter darker' the closing piece 'Omnious wake' in particular.
2 never heard of that name but im sure im more developed than whoever he is.
3 I compose both classical music for games (digitally) and true classical music since im a pianist in everyday life. I also compose 8 bit music for games btw.
i dont know either and classical composers compose music they dont sample.
i dont know what you are talking about, perhaps you mean orchestral blockbuster movie ost creators such as hans zimmer wich is pretty much the justin bieber of the classical genre.

@abstractgenius The real question is whether or not Kanye is actually a musician. Word has it he doesn't even play in instrument. There's an interesting comment Quincy Jones made about Kanye. You should totally look into it!

I'm a huge prog and hip hop fan, and a very funny coincidence the first time I heard this was 3 days before I heard Kanye West's "Dark Fantasy"
Love both versions

@flowerpower1nr1 How is it annoying that they got exposure to a great artist they otherwise wouldn't have been exposed to?
QueenAnime99 9 months ago
When I heard "Can we get much higher?" on that Hangover II commercial, my heart sank. It made me realize that Mike Oldfield's genius can be recognized by any musician (even if you dislike sampling/rap as I do, Kanye is a musician), but the labels of prog and new age will prevent his genius from being recognized by the masses. I'm a high school student and all my friends either hate my music or are just off listening to Lady Gaga (not a bad artist, but nowhere near as creative as Oldfield.)
Southernmetalhippie 9 months ago
Mike Oldfield co-wrote the song with Jon Anderson, produced the album with Simon Philips and performed the music, where Jon sang. It's very collaborative, more so than Mike's normal method which is to hire singers and musicians to perform what he doesn't do himself. He can sing, but usually prefers getting singers so the song has a particular sound or feel (Maggie Reilly, Bonnie Tyler, Jon Anderson, Roger Chapman, etc.). He views vocals as another instrument, like guitar or bagpipes or flutes.

eisenmenger14 9 months ago
Dude you cant compare this to the Kanye West version. One it isn't rap, two its two different songs from 2 different versions.
DVXfilms 9 months ago

@WoodRatGirl Did you just say that kanye west used an excerpt from this song. Thats a crying shame
Tubularism1 7 months ago
@Tubularism1 actually, it isn't... he makes good with the sample he uses from this song. and obviously you're ignorant to music :~)
osbuckeyes95os 7 months ago
@osbuckeyes95os Everyones entitled to their opinion, but sometimes one must analyze music in order to identify the skill that it took to produce it. I have listened to Kanye West, and I have listened to Mike Oldfield and personally, I believe that the guitar work and his original compositions require more talent to produce and evoke a much more spiritual and satisfying end product than Kanye West's rap. But if Kanyes music makes you happy, then power to you.
Tubularism1 7 months ago 3
@Tubularism1 your dead right. Nothing Kane west could do in a hundred years could in anyway even approache what MO has done and been doing since around 1977 I think. KW just does not have the ability and talent wise is not even on the same planet as MO.

@Tubularism1 this sounds a lot like synthesized instruments though... keep in mind not only rappers use synth and autotune
ramonramos88 5 months ago
@ramonramos88 synthesizers were being experimented with in the 1950's, mainly in Germany, and were popularized in the 60's with the "Moog" device. Electronica and pop was the main usage, certainly not relegated to rap what so ever as its application there did not occur until later. Mike uses every sound he can possibly make in this world to create his music, just listen to Amarok..
