The only reason Nirvana is considered "Grunge" is because they were a band in the Seattle area during that time. True, they do have a 'grunge' sound, but they were a very punk band. In fact, Kurt's first show ever was Black Flag and he wanted to start a punk band, which later became Nirvana.
