that was the last time you saw the centre of racourse full beacuse in 1997 the bomb scary rund it i wishe that aintree racourse can let the people bring there car or campavan or mobilehome in the centre of the racourse it felt like a nother festvalof the north to it did what do you all think ?
How much better this race has become? The crowds at the canal have long since gone and fences 6-9 (22-25) are now atmosphere free as a result compared to the old days. Just listen to the noise and see the crowd on the video for the 83 race as old Delmoss leads them round on the first circuit.
i backed rough quest at 33/1 when the weights came out even though he was just out of the handicap, then he won the racing post and finished second in gold cup , they talked about not going to aintree and then a stewards enquiry what a journey to glory and a great ride from mick fitz too !!!
I agree with the quality of the race but now they have compressed the handicap with the fences being modified to attract the better horses but rough quest of 149 would have beaten anyone.
Just 28 lined up - nothing to do with rules, just not many got into the handicap proper, which tells you just how much better the race has become in the last 10 years.
@sidMGS 28 lined up, the smallest field since 1970 (28 runners) and 1960 (26 runners). Part of the reason was a change in entry conditions. Previously horses rated 105 and then 110 could be allotted a weight. In 1996, the requirement was raised to rated 120 plus. Needless to say, in 1997, it was lowered back to 110 where it has stayed ever since. The bookmakers exerted a lot of pressure among others to get maximum fields.

I backed Life of a Lord under Charlie Swan and thought everything was looking good until four out. Realised he'd run out of petrol at Anchor Bridge.
