You should try the bass drum part. It's intense.

  • This movement reminds me why I love being a Euph player.

  • That final chord means that shit 'bout to go down. Then just when the juicy part comes up, Grainger nervously whisks us away to the heroic acts of Lord Melbourne in the next movement. (If only to give the people in this drama a bit of privacy.)

  • So glad I wasn't a woodwind playing this... :o

  • lol people saying this piece has a boring part for them.. come try out tuba! xD

  • The clarinet part is so fun! Haha

  • do i hear a soprano in there?

  • This is how I broke the song up in order to learn it...

Start - 0:31 = Portly gentlemen walking through a field, slightly buzzed.

0:32 - 0:45 = Portly gentlemen now dawn dresses and frilly skirts and spin around like ballerinas

0:46 - 0:59 = Back to walking, but now slightly more drunk

1:00 - 1:09 = They all began tripping and falling over

    1:10 - 1:20 = They all fall and roll down a hill

1:21 - End = They're crying because they lost their beer and wine during the fall down the hill

  • @PiccoloBoy15 I know the song is titled "Brisk Young Sailor" but everyone in my band class found the version I did to be really funny.

  • @PiccoloBoy15 I always interpreted that last section as the brisk young sailor realizing that his love had cheated on him, but yours is very funny

  • god i hate this movement -.- the only movement that makes me wish i wasn't a flute player

  • UNT!! I LOVE MY MUSIC SCHOOLLLLL!!!

  • Wow... way to feature bass clarinet!

  • Wow, the upper had a LOT of fun playing this.

Thumbs up if you didn't hear the Baritone solo...

  • Why do composers hate woodwinds? :'(

  • @BroadwayFlutist Hahahaha. We don't hate them, we just like color in music >.<

  • @SenakuAruno hahahahahhahahahahahahhaahahahahahha ( wiping tears of laughter away from face )

  • This is so pretty with all of the different woodwind sounds, sorry I never played it.

    PG was very awesome composer.

  • played picc on this...atleast the flutes can be covered up and blend...picc has no chance. lol.

  • I think one of Grainger's ex-girlfriends played flute. She cheated on him and he went to get his revenge on all flute players everywhere.

  • love the duets in this section. In tune yeah

  • I love UNT!! They are THE music uni of Texas.

  • so.....love to play those upper woodwind runs....loll jk

  • I'm so happy Tubas exist... :D

  • 0:31 = woodwind equivalent of Through the Fire and the Flames.

  • @NumberNine98 no that's Exultate by Samuel Hazo

  • @Holycrap27 HOLY JUNK. I just looked it up. You weren't kidding.

  • Oboe solo!

  • @WarriorMusic1993 Oboe/Soprano Sax duet

  • I love THIS song IT'S AWESOME!!!!

  • @Michiyo909 It really is so hard to play as a flute player. But its so much fun once you have it done.

  • @zinasays i don't have it down yet :( i can play it, just not up to the tempo our teacher wants.

  • man...where's the lovely euphonium solo gone?

  • I HATE playing this movement. being a flute player on this song is not fun.

  • @Michiyo909 Hate it? Sounds fun to me (I play flute as well). If it's hard, just see it as a new challenge. I think your lucky! You get to play Grainger songs... amazing composer.

  • @RangerZStudios my band teacher loves grainger :)

  • @RangerZStudios Well, now I can play it and it IS fun :)

  • @Michiyo909 I play oboe, and we're playing this in band. The first day of rehearsal, I turned to the second chair oboist and we laughed so hard.

  • @Michiyo909 maybe you just suck.

  • @CycloniteKiller Can you play this part on flute? If you can learn to play it flawlessly in less than 2 weeks THEN you can tell me i suck because i couldn't play it after only a couple weeks.

  • @Michiyo909 i dont play flute lulz. Euphonium is better anyway.

  • @CycloniteKiller You've got a point there. Euphoniums are pretty fricken sweet.

  • @Michiyo909 have you played it? Do you know where I can find sheet music? Thanks:)

  • @musicats7

I have played this. The flutes and clarinets have a murderous part!

  • @Michiyo909 I play flute and I think it sounds fun. Maybe I'm insane but, I love extremely hard music

  • I love my school.

  • My personal favorite movement, having never played it myself (I play the sax, so from the sound of the sax parts, it would still be my favorite). It perks me up, makes me all chipper, this movement. The Lost Lady is a very close second.

  • wow the NTWE does not play around.

    Awesome recording.

  • @theangelmary101

A bit heavy though for the first few measures. I would like to hear a lighter more seaworthy tone for the first half of this movement...

  • @blkjock81 I find it perfect. Make it too light and you will lose that hefty feeling of the sailor.

  • @MarineManiac002 id say, a bit lighter at the very beginning, but not too much lighter, and ONLY at the beginning

  • @theangelmary101 Well technically they could play around us in circles... I'd go so far to say they don't mess around.
