  • beautiful, touching song - stunning video. Thank you.

  • Listening to this sad, sweet music makes me think of drives through Natalie's old haunts beneath the great skeletal trees on Route 474 between Cutting and Panama, or perhaps downtown Jamestown where the ghosts loom in the windows of the bridal shop, or the Reuben Fenton Home where Cora Gillis laid the shade of the last old Union soldier to rest. in a desk drawer..the sounds are silvery and resonant, like a deep Chautauqua County winter, delicate like the veins in crumbling leaves...

  • Although I have long been a fan of Natalie Merchant's more popular songs, I first heard this song a couple of days ago and was riveted by the raw emotion. It is not very often that one is captivated by a song to this degree. And now that I see your slide show video, it only further enhances the experience. Thank you.

  • real, emotional, pure, soft

  • @The14thPatissiere My mom used to do the same thing when my sister and I were little. It does bring back so much memories :) Don't you wish you could almost go back to those moments so that maybe you could appreciate them a little better?

  • And thank you tikaturtle-- one word...... Stunning.

  • Don Peris really makes some amazing guitar tones happen on this song. The solo is very interesting I think.

  • łał

  • Be careful whay you wish for.....

  • "Still as the river grows in December

    Silent and perfect blinding ice

    Spring keeps her promises

No cold can keep her back

I want you to remember me that way"

I don't want to go away... I just don't want to lose what I've got.

Tell me that I don't have to... Please.

  • GooD Day

  • I remember this song from Dawson's Creek, Episode "Be Careful What You Wish For." In the end scene where Dawson says "Well, do it quickly, okay? Because . . . God, I love you." And she says, after he goes to sleep, "I love you too, Dawson." Then this very song plays and she goes to the window, sees that it's snowing outside, and makes a wish . . . Now, everytime it first snows, I play the song and make a wish. Corny, I know.

  • Not corny at all, sounds very sweet and romantic. ;-)

  • @Shadowrunner6969

Amazing, I came to hear more of Natalie's work, and find these very sensitive ...and very thoughtful folks ...with gentle souls hanging out here. Cool~! (and i once had to leave a lovely girl in Mass., at midnight, at a bus station. She said I couldn't leave, wouldn't leave, if it snowed. And of course it stated snowing hard! Silent, heavy snow, and the tears poured down her cheeks....& she looked at me ....but I had to go. Beautiful woman... Saddest night of my life)

  • @4711StGermain damn. sounds like a great love song or a novel or... a dream

  • That is a powerful and sad moment to be in...what could you have done to change the outcome?...what would I have done?? life is strange and hard sometimes...

  • This is a *NEAT* video to a *awesome* song.

  • I see this in many ways. Not really death rather reminds me of people that have just left. "wait for me" I dot know. So sad, so beautiful.

  • this may sound very corny but this song explains my depression isnt that weird, i know, i know

  • Not corny in any way, shape,or form.....My depression has allowed me to feel a connection with all of the sweetness and saddness that Natalie speaks of........be content and know that you are a deep minded person to be able to understand what is being expressed with this song..

  • ....Natalie allowes me to float across any part of her ocean mind, she is singing about...tranquil or tempest....

  • @DonsSanctuary

    Very well said.

    Depression=Feeling.

Sad feelings. Or maybe just a tender kind of thing that we have no other name for?

People who feel things strongly are very attractive to others with the same ability.

  • Just to let you know I was DonsSanctuary.....and thank you for understanding what I was trying to express....

  • @DonsSanctuary I hear ya. Depression is a dark country...

  • I used to have depression (years before I found this song) I can see how you'd say that. I have it mildly now and yeah I listen to this during down weeks.

  • i was depressed all my life. took antidepressants for 15 years. one day i just quit them. it was tuff but they were not helping. been off drugs for 6 months. dont know. i think depression is for a large part a state of mind. i love natalie but try listening to different music. the jam bands are the best i think. try to forget you are depressed. as great as many artists (like natalie) are, they may not be helping your state of mind. bands like phish have mega talent with shallow meanings. try

  • So if you listen to shallow, meaningless drivel you'll be fine, huh? Nice message to the kids; real nice!

  • yes actually. as great as natalie is, it is her lyrics that make her the artist, not her licks chops riffs or runs. the movement is great, however. the jam bands specialize in orgasmic sound. not lyrical depression. with or without the maniacs natalie can write a song to make any cheerful person want to blow their mind out. try phish. they will move you to joy. forget your sadness. dance your worries away.

  • sometimes you have to face sadness and grief head-on in order to truly get over it (and not just bottle it up). but it is good to hear a variety of music.

  • You're assuming that more notes = better. I disagree. What I like about an artist like Natalie is the tasteful use of intstrumentation to create context for a vocal and melody. Also, not all of her lyrics are sad, some of them are happy.

Jam bands like Phish don't do it for me. To me it's meandering, over-playing, and obnoxious. But to each his own.

And besides, what are you even doing at this video if you don't like this song?

  • Absolutely breathtaking song. Every time I hear those last lines I think they're so sad.

Anyway, I don't interpret the song to be about death literally, but to be about rebirth metaphorically (or going through a "seasonal change" within life).

When the person says "I want you to remember me that way" to her loved one, it's not about being remembered in any glorified light--she describes herself as blue, black, frozen, still, silent and blinding after all.

  • It's not all negative, though, either. She also describes herself as a flower (albeit "late blooming") and as spring faithful to her word, who ultimately cannot be held back by her current state of "coldness," stagnation/dormancy, etc. (thus the lines "Spring keeps her promises/No cold can keep her back"). With that said, it's still pretty sad that the singer wants to remembered mostly in a somber way.

  • However, the loved one can find solace in the reassurance that the singer will ultimately bloom. And even though it requires a period of separation and patience, the loved one can also find solace in the fact that the singer will do the same for her when she have to overcome trails in her life and grow as person ("Someday you'll take my place/And I'll wait for you here").

  • *trial

  • I think the guitar (throughout) is some of the most understated and beautiful I've ever heard and then the solo at 3.11... wow. Play it loud through some decent speakers.

  • I would love to meet a girl like Natalie...but do not know where to look..............

  • nice try...but do you think you can recreate the past?

  • Coffee Shops and indie shows. Thats all i can offer.

  • I saw her twice. The first time was @ the Santa Barbara bowl, the sun was setting over the pacific as the show started. the sacond time was @ Royce Halkl, UCLA and she was wearing these dominetrix black boots singing "IM GONNA CALL THE LAW ON YOU" from Motherland.

  • GREAT VIDEO.WHAT A VOICE!

  • One of my favorite songs of all time. Nice video :)

  • So excellent. Beautiful images. I would like to take a walk within each landscape.

    Nice work, thanks.

  • Its obviously a song about a dying young mother, who will subsequently be seen in the sheen of her dying state, still perhaps quite beautiful. The young child obviously is troubled and sad and wants to follow. The child is told by his or her mother to wait "here" in this ephemeral existence. So your video is really quite good and captures all of those elements and the whole tenor of the song. It is quite a painful song to listen to.

  • Wow. I've heard this song probably a hundred times and I never thought of that interpretation.

    Thank you

  • "how long will you wait for me here..." Wooow she really knows how to pull on emotions.... also, to the maker of this vid- its beautiful :)

  • does it count if I get there first?
