  • Another GREAT Asian in Jamaican Music History... The late Leslie Kong... If you're familiar with Beverly's All Stars... The band that backed many musicians from Derrick Morgan to The late great Desmond Dekker... Leslie Kong was the man behind it... BRILLIANT! :)

  • "Rowing"... right...

  • Brap! Brap!

  • Sorry not Bobby Brady Carl Brady...Bobby is is son and went to school with me

  • The two guys from the band dancing are Keith Lyn and Bobby Brady, singer and percussionist

Byron playing bass and looks like Ken Lazarus on guitar left

Those were my good old days :-)

    Tony Verity the cool fool...

  • What a KILLER ska session.

    :D

  • Although it looks kinda like him, that's not Byron Lee dancing (as the video description says). He is there playing bass, behind the narrator!

  • Oh my godness, that is correct. I'm so sorry.

    Thanks

  • No worries! In fact, it *is* pretty amazing to see that besides Byron there were at least two other Chinese-Jamaicans (i think?) in his band! Well, there have been lots of Chinese-Jamaicans involved in Jamaican music, incl. Clive Chin, Tony Chin...

  • hahaha.

  • Yea, sure, that is really all about ROWING. This is SK-YAH!

  • None of these dancers looks like they're straight off the streets of Kingston, so, for all we know, THEY are doing the dance wrong. Something tells me no one in this video ever met a real rude boy skankin' away to Prince Buster.

Or, maybe, this really is how it went down...

  • This kind of dancing was sort of manufactured. Prince Buster himself said there was no distinct "ska dance" like this. Basically, this was to fit it "ska" as one of the "dance crazes" (think Cha cha cha, rhumba, the Twist, etc) that consumer (upper class) audience would do at the time. One way the music industry sold records was by popularizing dances that went w/ certain music. In 1964, there was an attempt to popularize ska in the US as the latest craze which is why they made up these moves.

  • ...and they sent the genteel Byron Lee band to the NYC World's Fair to promote ska in the JA exhibit.

  • Skanking is a form of dancing practiced in the reggae, ska, ska punk, ska-core, hardcore punk, and grime music scenes.

The dance style originated in the 1950s or 1960s at Jamaican dance halls, where ska music was played. British mods and skinheads of the 1960s adopted these types of dances and altered them.

  • The dancing style was revived during the 1970s/1980s 2 Tone era, and has been adopted by some individuals in the hardcore punk subculture. The punk version features a sharp striking out look with the arms, and is sometimes used in moshing to knock around others doing the same. The striking out with the arms while traveling in a circle is also common in psychobilly "wrecking."

  • The term "skanking" has also been used to refer to a style of rhythm guitar playing employed frequently in reggae music as part of the actual rhythm section, most frequently as a regular up stroke across all six strings of the guitar on every other beat of the measure, frequently exactly accompanied by the keyboard equivalent.

    Any question?

    Have a good SKANKING!

  • That guitar style is called chucking actually.

  • The song is a ska version of "Last Night" by the Mar-Keys

  • vieja escuela

  • "Ska is as easy as that!"
