Video is great, only thing i am worried, that my headliner is a little bit more complicated shape (more intense "height" where the main light is mounted") and it's from 1981s car, so the "base" is very fragile, and i have no idea how to clean in from the foam completely (it's bout 90% clean now) and put the new material without damaging it...
I appreciated all the videos on headliner repairs. All very informative . I do believe Sunbrite auto repair Tampa Florida showed a less complicated instruction to follow overall.Thank you ---Betty G Palm Bay FL
Just wanted to share - the board in my truck was made out of egg carton foam. Wire brush would have torn it up so I used a vacuum cleaner attachment with short nylon bristles. Cleaned the old foam off, and vacuumed up the mess at the same time. Worked great! Also had a few cracks which were easily repaired with some 15 minute epoxy. THANKS FOR THE GREAT VIDEO!
May I ask a question? Would one 16.75 ounce can of adhesive be sufficient to cover a headliner that measures approximately 48'' X 60'', or would you recommend two cans? Thank you.
@21Shemie, yes you can just recline your right front seat all the way back and slide your headliner thru that right front door. Great video and very helpful
i am doing a 1982 chevy suburban headliner but i don't want to use regular headliner fabric. can i just glue the foam in and do it again with the fabric i want. i want a fishing looking fabric that they use for cabins on furniture in cabins in the mountains
I watched this video this morning as the headliner in VR Commodore Berlina is sagging, i'll be doing it properly on my VS, but today all I did was rip the fabric off and leave the board in (or take it off if you don't want to cover the windows in tape or anything) bought some mid grey colored spray paint, painted it, can't even tell the difference unless you touch it, just looks brand new, cheap easy fix for someone who knows people that aren't picky with road worthies.
Awesome video! I'm almost done with my headliner, and it's my first time. It's hard work scrubbing the foam off, but it'll be rewarding when I feel great about my headliner.
Dream theatre was a great band to pick for this video.
great how to video... I'm restoring a 64 AMC Rambler 330 2 door with the origional headliner still in it. Currently the side pieces and dome light are the only thing holding the board up. Any suggestions on if you have a warped headliner board? Should I look to a junk yard for a good board?? I know there's no new parts for this car.
How difficult is it to do the columns? 00 Volvo S80 that's been garage parked both at home and work for the last 10 years and now that the wife is parking in the sun I'm having massive separation.
This video is great... I replaced my headliner on my 1989 jeep cherokee by following these steps and it came out like it was done by a pro! My headliner took 2 cans of spray adhesive... I used one can of DAP as shown in the video and i ran out so i got one can of 3M trim super strength because there was no more DAP in the store. thank you so much without this video I would not have event attempted to replace my headliner by myself!
Thanks! Your video was the best and gave me confidence I could try this myself. I found matching headliner at Jo Ann Fabrics. They have specific material for headliners that has the foam backing. I tried 2 stores to find one that matches my car, Next I got the glue spray from auto parts store and got a tub brush from a .99cent store. Worked perfect! It was a little difficult taking it out, but I realized plastic pieces come right off. Then reinstalling, I finally got it my myself. Thanks
hey i saw the video, and i am planning to fix the roof of my car too, my car is nissan santra 99 gxe, any suggestions about materials and how to do that? any extra additional materials? where to find such materials? please let me know because i am excited to fix my roof too. thank you
wow thanks for that vid i cant believe i was almost ready to shell out the 200 to have the upholstery shop do it i have an 89 deville with no sun roof and a very basic headliner so i will definitely be applying this info
You might want to mention how long to let the glue set up. I believe it's supposed to not be tacky to the touch when it's ready to have the material set in place. About 5 minutes for 3M? And that you don't want to push with your fingers anywhere as it will leave marks. How long to let the glue set before reinstalling? I am thinking there would be less chance of finger marks from installation if the glue has dried?
Where do you buy the replacement cloth with foam on it? Any suggestions? I have a 98 Escort with a floppy headliner & really need to replace it. I hope it is as easy as the video makes it look. By the way, this may be the BEST instructional video on Youtube! Thanks for uploading it.

looking good bro. But what happen if torn the headliner got torn or broken in one area. Do I need to replace the whole thing? do I have to look in the junk yard for

@BigDave331 if the headliner board is damaged after removing the old material and foam, you may have to get a replacement board (used is fine). You can sometimes patch/repair the old board. The foam back headliner material hides minor damage pretty well.
Thank You for a professional but easy to understand video. I'm going to follow your instructions and fix my van asap. Thanks again for making it easy to understand.
how hard would it be to do it on a 96 eagle talon?
and if you want to do the visors as well like changing the colors on from grey to black because my headliner is grey but i want it black, would that be difficult to do?
@DjKresht The visors are sometimes more difficult than the headliner. Visors have to sewn sometimes on a commercial machine. The headliner is not bad...with no sunroof.
@sipahi61 No. It should however be approached with a bit more caution. All the panels that confine the board are removeable. Some are a bit tougher than others. Something else to keep in mind: old plastic gets brittle and breaks easily. Be prepared for that possibility, for in the trade, it happens all the time! If you can carefully pull an edge out far enough to see behind, often you will see the clip or device holding it in place and deal with it accordingly. How do I know? I'm in the video!

@mrtoeknee641 The material is called 'foam backed headliner material'. The thin rubber may be a layer of the headliner board. The older headliner boards would separate sometimes. Check my uploader comments at the top on where to possibly find the supplies and material.
My headliner is torn everywhere in my 1995 Ford Ranger. I'm looking to do something very similar to how you demonstrated in this video. Is there any difference in difficulty for me to do this. Thanks
@IceCold314 Material- Local fabric store or upholstery shop. Some wholesale material suppliers will sell to retail. Glue- Auto parts store or one of the above mentioned. Some auto paint suppliers may have it. Stick with (no pun intended) a 3m 8080 or 8090 or one of the products shown in the vid. Some contact cements can be sprayed from a paint gun. That is what most upholstery shops do...
i have a 67 pontiac catalina 4 door sedan but could use a new headliner. many parts of it seem very different than any car made in the past 30 years or so. im sure i will get someone to redo it for now but any ideas of what would be a good way for me to redo it if i want to in the future?
@rosswebb08 We call that a Bow-Style headliner. Completely different animal. Its a sewn vinyl pattern installed with metal rods or 'bows'. A pre-made headliner can usually be purchased and you use the existing bows.
@erikinhawaii You dont let it completely dry, you give it time to tack up(5 to 10 minutes). It makes it easier to work with the material (glue doesnt grab - allows you to lift the material up if needed). Rubbing the material w/pressure makes it grab...
