We love fireworks. In the chinese new year eve, we consume million times more fireworks than the Beijing 2008 opening ceremony. It is much better to use the gunpowder in this way rather than use in Iraq or Palestine to kill people.

Nationalism can be a bad thing. It's not a good thing to say that something is good just because you believe it, or because you're a part of it. That's not progressive thinking. What I said was an observation, and if you don't like it, that's fine.
However, saying that I disgrace my country when I wasn't trying to be offensive to China, isn't fine.
Besides, his assumption WAS wrong. Mine was pretty accurate.

I had NO agenda. I saw a bunch of people saying that the Beijing olympics were the best ever. I disagree.
Also, China isn't a race. It's a nation. Hence I can't be racist to it.
My other comment was right on. Why is China wasting money on sports when they could be spending those millions on saving citizens who are living on subsistence farming, or dying from disease.

Nationalism in China had been from the people in the beginning, and it wasn't about world dominance. Nationalism developed in China because, at the time, China was invaded by imperialistic nations. The Chinese were merely trying to protect their country and their identity. They never dreamed of world dominance at all. Rather, we Americans tend to think ourselves as the center of the world...

Beijing opening ceremony was spectacular. Incredible discipline and technological accuracy, the way only Chinese could manage to achieve. But Athens 2004 Games had a privilege; they took place in the birthplace of the Olympic Games, so it was a matter of pride for Greeks to give Games their true meaning; human being in the centre of interest. Beijing made an exaggerating effort to show the world, that here we are people, in front of you the chinese strength dominates and rules.

I heard the footprints fireworks were real...but there was no way of photographing them...so the CGI versions were shown on TV. Real footprint fireworks were set off.
China invented fireworks, of course they are going to put on the greatest show the world has ever seen.
As far as human rights, remember that the US doesn't have a perfect history either. China has MUCH TO IMPROVE but I think they have a right to be proud of this accomplishment.

For all of you out there yapping about using a chopper to follow the "foot prints", here's some simple math to shut ur yapper. The steps started at Tian'anmen and end at bird nest in 29 steps, average about 2~3 sec/step giving a totally time of less than 90sec. The distance between Tian'anmen and bird nest is around 10km(6.3mile). This need the chopper to fly at ~450km/h(280mph). While within the reach of some faster ones, it is WAY TO FAST for TV ones, not to consider the timing etc.
