Those bemoaning the state of music these days should bear in mind that Copper Blue came out the same year as KWS, Craig McLachlan, Undercover and Wet Wet bloody Wet. See that greener grass? It's poison ivy.
Just think about the garbage that was popular at the time: Hair Bands, Boy Bands, Rap/Hip Hop just beginning it's decent into Minstrel Show pandering and self parody.
But then there is this........Out of the garbage pile comes this......masterpiece.
@84heroes1 backspacer isn't a bad album really - could it have been better? sure, but so could have no code. you talk about 'transcendent magic' as if that's what's lacking from backspacer, when really its just what made vs vitalogy and no code great albums. what makes backspacer good is the sound of a band entirely focussed on who they are... same applies when you compare copper blue and bob's later solo work, particularly a record like life and times
What? They're reminiscent of Jawbox on a very superficial level imo...a loud alt-rock band. Jawbox were much more dense rhythmically, more like a junior Fugazi (in the best sense) with squalling guitars. Melodically everything in Sugar came from Bob Mould (almost) and you could play a lot of those songs on an acoustic, you couldn't really do the same with Jawbox (Savory etc a good exception).
This whole album makes you wonder where it all went wrong and how we ended up with the Glee cast vomiting up covers from American Idol winners and the Jonas Brothers pawing at their instruments like clumsy teenagers trying to undo a bra for the first time.
SUGAR should do a reunion.

BOB MOULD is an under-rated genius;
COPPER BLUE= One of the greatest guitar albums ever.
And yeah: 'the act we act is wearing thin; I think we'll wear it out again'.

Bob Mould's done a lot of great work but this album is a career high point. I need to get a copy again, goddamnit.

So Mould started the Huskers, which influenced Jawbox, and then he formed a band that sounds jus tlike Jawbox. . . .what?

The Chorus makes the song, agree with Alpineinc1.
