Before the chicanes he preselects the gear he will use with his left hand...when he hit the brakes the gearbox drops down to the preselected gear whith out the risk of gearing down to fast/slow or selecting the wrong gear!
I hear you brother. These old, fast classics should never have been scrapped or altered. I realise the safety parameters the drivers need, but they loved old Hockenheim & Monza when the cars were amazingly quick (late 90's through to early part of the 2000's) Modern F1 isn't as quick as we all know it could be without the extra cost cutting for teams & limitations on testing & the gradually smaller engines.. For me, this kills a little bit of the excitement.
@schroeder1112 I've seen it my friend, there's also a photo on wikipedia. How stupid and hypocrites was herman tilke? he had to cut thousands of beautiful trees to make the "new" track and he left the old part (which is much smaller) to come up against this loss. Double failure, he destroyed the old track and made an ugly abomination and he also destroyed a big part of this beautiful forest..
The Williams BMW car of 2001 was a great F1 car! That BMW engine was the most powerful and was the most super reliable engine of that time! Quiet possibly the greatest engine ever made in F1! Just ashame the Williams chassis was not aerodynamically as strong as the other teams cars during that season! Montoya would have been champion if it was! I have no doubt about that! But my god that V10 BMW engine sounds sweet! Love it!
@79pudgeman totally misinformed mate!! JPM's and Ralph's engines had SERIOUS reliability issues. the only reliable engine in that season was the Ferrari engine.
Nothing will ever bit the old Hockenheim with the magnificent Stadium complex where the cars were always bouncing because of the total absence of downforce.... those were the days.... :'(
i hope your happy tilke, you butchered this classic piece of race track, a track that is 100 times better that anything you could possibly create, abu dhabi pppfffft what a joke.
it´s a shame the new Hockenheim. The old was a unique, but the way better track is at everytime the Nordschleife. Demandingst course of the world all time.
even if this circuit needed a redesign, and i'm not sure it did, at least capture some of the character of what made the old one great. this place had the insane speed going for it, and it's now just like any other circuit. not particularly fast, and no especially unique things.
The BMW engine was really very good. You can see that in 2001, Williams won the races in more faster circuits, with Ralf at Montreal and Hockenheim and Montoya at Monza.
@youngdeezy1990 The Track organizers thought it would be better for the Fans to have a short circuit so that spectators would see the cars more often passing by. It was a very bad decision, as it destroyed a very unique track and most fans didn't like the change at all. The Hockenheim Ring got into huge financial troubles because of that needless redesign of the track.
@BladedBacklash No safety issues there, just today's pilots are too gay to race in circuits like hockenheim, nordschleife and monza. Just remember this year's Korean GP :)
@BladedBacklash you are wright , just you see gp korean rain and please stop the race haha, but gp germany 1968 no safety but race is not cancelled, today drivers sucks and tracks and cars. why destroyed everthing good in f1? safety is not reason to destroyed this track i think my frend that bernie scare terorist around 2001 after 11 september, next year 2002 we see new hockenheim, but spectators saw race in woods , where jim clark killed in which turn'?
That track is stupid.... Huge straights need no skill. And what happens if two drivers collide red bull-style on one of them? There's no run-off.... New Hockenheim is much better- It takes some decent skill, and with the engine freeze, the same team would win year after year.... Ask Martin Brundle too =P
And about Tilke, the drivers all seem to like his tracks. Why don't ppl like them? Valencia is amazing, as well as Istanbul Park and all the others. I don't care what you say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Imola, and Hockenheimring were 2 great circuits destroyed because of the threats that the FIA made.
