if the song is played in a major key (which i believe it is) then black keys are not involved.

Firstly black keys have nothing to do with a piece being in a major key or not. But yeah the first (About To Crash) is in a major tonality but not the Ionian it's actually in E Mixolydian.

Well, if you want to get technical then its not in a major key, its modal. And only white notes are used if its C major

Mixolydian is a major mode. Well obviously, but white notes can also be used for A Minor, D Dorian etc.

Well my music teacher in school always told me that when we call a mode "Major" it relates to the losest sound; Major or minor. But Major jeys use the major scale exclusivly, while minor keys use the melodic, harmonic or natural minor. ts just one of those weird little technicalities which everybody gets wrong, but is largley accepted

Well yes that is what I meant. Of course only the Ionian mode is the true Major scale. But the Mixolydian and Lydian as well are considered Major modes.

Not from what Ive heard. Ive always een told that if a song is using the dorian mode, for example, then its key would be called Modal, not minor. This is coming from classical theory lessons. But I now what you mean - dorian has quite a minor-like sound, so we ususally just call them minor and major (and diminished) modes.

of course, you can never call something that is modal major or minor, but the modes themselves have major/minor elements to them.
