I've considered buying one for years, I had a smaller parrot-type bird when I was younger, but was unfortunately frozen to death when it flew out of a window during Winter, landed on a tall spruce tree, and refused to get down. I know now that I should have gotten a latter, done something.. I was just hoping it would come home. But it didn't.
I keep telling myself I should get a parrot again since I loved it so much, but it's such a large commitment.. I feel I'll never be ready. It's like a kid.
aww i wish i could do that with my bird. i can for like 2min then he/she dont know witch, gets to exsited and bits REALY hard, trust me it hurts like a SOB.
I want a macaw really badly but I'm just not sure which color to get. I thought my mind was set on a blue and gold but now I love millitary as much ;__;
@creepygirl94 its not color you want though either. each macaw has a different personality. do some research on them first. some are more temperamental than others.
@creepygirl94 its not color you want though either. each macaw has a different personality. do some research on them first. some are more temperamental than others.
My dream bird is a Military Macaw and that one is very sweet. I have a harlequin that is very sweet like that. I also have a Green wing and a B&G baby on the way she is still with the breeder but should be home in August.
@Sammy78girl When they are with a loving owner, all they do is nibble on you, like a love bite. You don't want to be bitten by one when they feel threatened though!
but you shouldn't be handling her like that, especially picking her up from the rear. you're brushing all over her 'sexy spots' like her vent and under the wings. that can lead to some hormonally triggered behavioral troubles.
you might be able to ignore the experts when handling like that doesn't seem to change your bird. But often times, it can lead to unwanted behavior in other ways, like aggression and biting to other people. If your bird thinks of you as its husband or wife, it's going to be jealous when it sees you interacting with other people or animals.
you'd also probably be pretty confused, if your date was flirting with you and touching you near erogenous zones or something like that, and when you lean in for a kiss, they start pushing you away. that can lead to insecurities if not worse: biting issues, screaming, or egg laying in females (that can lead to other problems).
it's just better to make sure that there is a line between 'were friends' and 'id like to make parrot babies with you'
@chibitamalove actually, i find that some kinds of birds, like the macaws, are loving to many people, not just one. i have a red front macaw who acts like that and i give her a lot of affection. she even likes strangers. you see, birds are like dogs except they can fly and are very smart. i love them.
BabsOMG, I have to agree chibitmalove. If I touch my macaw too much, even in the right places, she gets way too excited. Depends on the bird, the age, the people involved.
Oh yes. They can get very attached and fall in love with you. I have a yellow-naped macaw that's like that. They will bite YOU to give you the hint to get other people away. They are like humans. They get very attached. But once that bond is there that bird will let you do anything. They are so loving and just want to be a part of your day. It is a commitment with a wonderful companion.
Parrots, unlike cats and dogs, need constant attention. They need toys, special care and yes they are loud and messy. I'm not using this as an analogy (because it's exactly true) but they are exactly like little human kids. Birds are very fragile creatures when it comes to their health too. But if you do enough research and spend time with some other birds beforehand I'm sure it'll be fine. These birds can be your best friends. I know mine is.
I had a nandae conure actually it was my(ex) husbands bird but i dont think he liked him but was verry fond of My female quaker parroit they were the best of friends, but the conure all it did was yell and screem all day. my quaker was verry talkitive and fun. now if My ex wasnt at home both birds were verry calm and the conure didnt scream and holler as much he would wistle and sing untill my ex came home.
I saw a tame macaw in the pet store a while back but couldn`t afford it. It was missing a few toes (born that way) so it couldn`t scratch. It would let you rub it`s head and everything. I hope it found a good home.
I had one, until some evil people stole him from me! All animal lovers out there take really good care of your pets and don't ever leave them unatended for a second!!! There are heartless criminals out in this world who don't care how much you love your pet, it's just another piece of loot they can sell or take for themselves. And please DON'T BUY STOLEN PETS! If they have tags always check at a vet if they have been reported stolen.
@Illchangeitlater Wow. I'm sorry to hear about that. Poor lil bird. I know it probably doesn't mean much but I hope you find him/her. People can really be bastards sometimes. That's why I have 2 dogs and a bunch of guns in my house. I'm getting a B&G macaw here soon from a family who can't afford to take care of her anymore. She's the most awesome bird! She took to us right away the first time we met her. I can't wait to get her home :-)
amazing!
