  • First time I've seen that r.p.m. clock is smaller then a speedometer. :)

  • The BW 3 speed wasn't made for speed, its a great transmission for the highway, and economy use.

  • Poor video...

  • co to za szwabski ryj ? kurwy niemieckie wypierdalac

  • the speed meter of this car must propably sawing how many liters - galons eating that beast

  • you wasted 4 liters of gas

  • what's a shit ??? where is the DRAG ?

  • Maybe I'm missing something, but where is the acceleration other than the engine's RPMs?

  • The W 116 6.9 is one of my dreamcars!!! Nicest Mercedes!!

  • Ae, cariocas mentirosos. bando de lier

  • man. whats with your tachometer ? i had a '79 ford granada 2D with speedometer working just like that.

  • The fastest i have ever gone is 185Mph(295Kph) in a 1973 Mercedes 280 SE with a 6.9 liter(417 in³)V8 from 450 SEL.

Custom built by my stephdad in the late 1970's.

  • Sorry, not possible. AMG built a 6.9 with 425HP. That was going 280 kph = consider aerodynamics...

  • My stephdad was the head mechaninc for Mercedes in Stuttgart, Germany and he said that they completly rebuilt the engine with different cams, etc. And as far as i know the engine were pushing almost 500HP..

And my mom has a speeding ticket from the early 1980's when she was caught in a speedtrap doing 185Mph(295Kmp).

  • @bigbzon You could drop a W116 off the Empire State Building and it wouldn't reach 185 MPH... just not aerodynamically possible. W116 can *maybe* do 130 MPH tops.

  • @petersneaks I don't know Cd for 116. But for 126 you would need about 300kW to drive at the speed of 300 kph. Yep, to reach it's top speed of 260/ you need 205-210, for 300 kph = 300 kW

  • @petersneaks I agree that 185 was impossible...but many road tests of the 6.9 w116 when new show a 144 top speed!

  • @petersneaks

Horse shit. With enough power you can make a flat brick wall move at 185mph.

Sure, the old Mercedes sedan is not as aerodynamic as modern cars, but with enough power it compensates for it. I seem to recall that 6,9 litre V8 developing some insane torque, with which it can push the air.

"just not aerodynamically possible"= you have no clue about even the simplest things in basic physics.

Did you know Mercedes GP cars saw over 200mph in the late 30's?? How aerodynamic were they??

  • @petersneaks

Brock Yates, and other testers in the late 70's saw 150mph+ on the speedometer. Mario Andretti reportedly did 155mph in one, and was amazed how stable it was at that speed (compared to the contemporary supercars).

Sorry, but your aerodynamics argument is bunk. You can make a huge semi go 185mph if you have enough power. And they have done it.

  • @bigbzon more like 286hp

  • Its a lie, You say your V8 was put in a 280SE...

Your 280SE if built in 73 would be manufactured in Sindelfingen, Not Stuttgart.

  • I didnt say that our 280 were built in Stuttgart, i said that Ulf(my stephdad at the time) worked at Mercedes in Stuttgart and that they REPLACED the engine there(as far as i know). Its possible that they replaced the engine somewhere else, i wasent even born when they replaced it(i was born 1981). I were only 2 or 3 years old when my mom were stopped in a speedtrap in Sweden doing 295Kph on the E4(motorway).

We sold the car in 1985 to a man in Stockholm, Sweden. So it might still be out there.

  • You just want some attention right!!!!

    No worries... we believe you...

    Hahaha

Why dont u upload some videos regarding this matter and stop convincing everyone 2 believe you...

  • Well if you had read the comment you would have seen tha i was only 4 when we sold it in 1985, you know 24 years ago.

We might have some pictures somewhere but they dont show the engine.

  • What the hell is the big deal? He probably isn't lying, and if he is, what difference does it make? Shit, some people are so jaded they like to bitch about anything..

  • :O 1978 mercedesteki sese bak...

  • ficou parado?????????

  • my god one of the best engine sounds ive ever heard beatiful or beastly its awesome roar

  • solo miren mi mercedes benz en venezuela como mueve las rpm y esta un poquito averiado

  • hahaha, tá igual o Cocoon no sol!!!

  • The newer car ist faster. More Power, more gears, and better tracktion. But in its time, it was germanys fastest and most powerful production car.

  • actually the W108 (300SEL 6.3) was faster, because it didn't use that really bad Borg Warner 3 speed automatic transmission, but a ZF (made in germany) 4 speed automatic. was quite a difference

  • The much lighter 6.3was faster in acceleration only(6.6 sec.from0-100 Km/h to7,7 sec.for the450 SEL 6.9,in mid-speed acceleration,the difference was somewhat more sensitive(1)),but NOT in top speed (218,7 Km/h to 235,5 Km/h),were the 6.9 left the older modell far behind.The top speed given by the company was215 Km/h to225 Km/h resp.,if I am not mistaken.

    (1) clocked by german car magazine "auto, motor&sport".

  • @Heske1991 The 300SEL 6.3 is a W109, not a W108. It is not faster than a 6.9, but it is quicker because of the higher rear end. The 6.9 was meant for Autobahn cruising. While a 6.9 is pretty quick to 60 (around 7 sec), a 6.3 will beat it. Past that, the 6.9 has the advantage due to a low gear ratio.

  • @petersneaks

    Belive what you want.

The engine had 500HP and did almost 190 MPH.

She was going so fast that the motorwaypolice had to put up a roadblock in the next town because the cars the police had wasent fast enough to keep up with her.

  • @bigbzon Haha... ok, I will. I'm sure you've heard a lot of stories, but forget the engine and the horsepower for a moment. All cars have an aerodynamic signature, which simply won't allow them to exceed a certain speed. Heck, even NASCAR cars can literally "fly" off the track at 200 MPH. Go back 30 years from today, know that a W116 has no rear wing or front spoiler. Your mom wasn't going 185. Period.

  • @petersneaks

Belive what you want, i dont care.

You´ll probanly say that the -69 and -73 Corvette´s we had didnt top 100 either.

  • @petersneaks hahahah another on-line professor, spreading his knowledge, gathered at dorky forums :D with enough horse-power your house would do 300 kph.. look for red victor I, the most powerful street legal car... over 2000HP, 0-100kph in 1 second on a rubber track, and it would do a lot more than 300kph.. go to its owner and tell him his car's aerodynamic signature won't allow him to do so :D :D :D why don't you just shut up next time you think you know something?..noob..old mercedeses rule!

  • @ML63AMG Sigh.. ok, strap an Atlas rocket on to a 6.9, and you'll go very fast. You win. Now, back to reality. What makes a car go fast (forget drag coefficeint) is: gear ratio, rear end ratio, tire size, max RPM. A stock 6.9 already has a rear ratio of 2.65, and third is not an overdrive. Stock tire size is 215/70/14. AMG advertised a max HP of about 330. So, we need to know what mods this guy's mom's 6.9 had, including trans, rear, and tire size. But I doubt it will add up to 185 MPH.

  • @petersneaks I don't know if your numbers are correct but if I'm correct this tyre size means just over 2m lenght of the tyre, let's say the engine's max RPM are arround 6000, 300kph are 5km/min, so with this rear ratio of 2.65 we are looking juuuust over 1:1 final gear ratio.. And so far can't see nothing strange here, even for the stock car, and as far as I know we are speaking of a tuned one.. Add a little downhill on the highway, and I really can't see nothing strange about doing 300kph...

  • @ML63AMG Does it strike you odd that a true supercar, the new SLS, which has had the snot tuned out of its engine, transmission, body, suspension, etc, gets just to 200 MPH? The 1980 Daytona 500 winner averaged 177 MPH. So, a mom driving a mid-70's sedan did 185 MPH. I still don't buy it.

  • @ML63AMG Oh yeah, and I almost forgot. The SLS speed, and of course the Nascar record, were performed on RACE TRACKS. Mom supposedly did 185 on a road between two towns (I assume NOT the Autobahn). Again, I don't buy it.

  • @ML63AMG Here's what I think *might* have happened... Mom got a ticket doing 185 kM/h, NOT MPH! But over time the kM/h has morphed, in his mind, to MPH. Remember, this happened in Germany, where a speedo would be in kM/h. Over time, telling the same (wrong) story will lead someone to actually believe it is the truth.

  • @petersneaks I've done over 180kph in 72hp 190D (factory top speed arround and under 160kph) with no modifications on it.. I don't buy factory top speed, and again as I remember we are talking about a tuned 6.9 engine!!!... How come the old F40 is faster than enzo?.. mclaren F1 than SLR mclaren?.. jaguar xj220 than.. everything else?.. Old is just better.. new cars have lots of restrictions.. And let me ask you do you think race tracks have longer straights than public roads?.. No, they don't..

  • @ML63AMG I don't know why this bothers me so much, but it does. All the cars you mentioned are true supercars. The 6.9 was quite an exercise, but it is a sedan and not in the same league as the cars you mentioned. Brabus put a 6.9 engine into a late 90's S600 coupe. Brabus claimed 508 HP and a top speed of 304 kM/h. Now, that was modified. Oh, and about the track, yes there are great long streches of road. But at 195 MPH, even a little dip in the road would send the car flying.

  • @petersneaks A modern 200hp car is good for 250kph.. How much do you think you need for 300+?.. The cars I mentioned do 220mph and over no problem at all, we are talking under 200mph.. The roads.. Even in Bulgaria with our roads, which are more like country fields, people drive their new cars with over 250kph.. In fact, not only new cars, old too..

  • @ML63AMG By default, you haven't proven your case. This "boys" mom had a car that went 185 kM/h, not 185/Mph. Case closed.

185 is FAST... scary fast. Not "mom" fast, not "kid" fast. Unless you are a professional, it is also deadly fast.

  • @petersneaks

450SEL with 6.9 liter engine have top speed somewhere near 140mph.

185 mph is not impossible with that car, specially because that car have only 3 gears. You need 5 gears at least to do 185mph, or 4 very long gears.

There's many Mercedes innovations about this engine and one of famous is dry sump technology.

  • @2jzgtejza80 The 6.9 has a track recorded top speed of about 138 MPH. I'm sure a few cars with some mods or under special conditions went a mile or two faster. The 6.9 is famous because A) it was Mercedes most expensive (normally available) production car at the time, B) it was the (defacto) successor to the 6.3, C) it was released when it was politically incorrect to do so, and D) it really was fast for its time. By the way, I own a few M100's, including a 6.9. I know of what I speak.

  • @petersneaks

I agree with u, I'm just saying that in this time dry sump was not popular in street road cars.

  • @2jzgtejza80 The dry sump system was not an innovation; it was a necessity. The M100 engine was much too tall for the low hood of the W116, so dry sump technology from racing cars was borrowed to solve the problem. Of course, the marketing department at MB declared the system "revolutionary", when it was merely pragmatic.

  • @ML63AMG It's just not true, that older cars are faster. They were much lighter because of missing safety issues. And you can't shift as fast with your old manual gearbox as with a modern automatic transmission.

Your 190 D is easily going 160 kph. If the speedo shows 180, it's quite normal.

  • @fivesixtysl Yes it's true.. Old cars are lighter because they are simple, they don't have so much additional extras, and of course the engines are sooo much better.. OK, a modern engine is more powerful hp to volume, but not really reliable, and have you tried the throttle response on a new engine? If the car isn't cupra mupra type R GTI GTR turbo SS sport racing AMG McLaren brabus nitro thing the response is really poor.. I know this makes the ride smoother but.. I drive the car, don't ride it

  • @fivesixtysl look for top gear old vs new.. Older cars are just better.. I like the luxury of a new car, but that's for the daily driver.. For the track, old cars are better.. The only thing I like about modern race cars are the automatic double clutch sequential gearboxes, they are the real deal.. But that's may be because I use gears a lot, I like my car to be exactly at the right gear and revs when I need it to be..

  • @ML63AMG

No, specially build up race tracks have longer straights and you can drive much safer from police. And your talking that old cars are faster around track are bullshit. In what year are you living 1965. ?? Modern cars are faster, stronger, safer, and finally better quality. But commercial vehicles are bad built and only thing today that is not quality is electronic devices. Modern mechanics from Mercedes 6.3 AMG in SLS is light years over 6.3 from 300SE in quality and materials.

  • @2jzgtejza80

Listen up. You have no clue what you are talking about.

Those 70's Mercedes were the epitome of quality and they practically last forever. In my country the 70's and 80s Mercedes "E-class sedans" (not called that until the 90's) were very popular with taxi drivers, since they never ever broke down. The same taxi drivers were disappointed when Mercedes's legendary quality took a nosedown in the 90's.

Who the HELL says modern cars have automatically better quality? Are you insane?

  • @McLarenMercedes

Buddy, I live in a country where taxi drives reached over 1 million km on old 1974. 240D and 300D Mercedes without rebuilding the engine. Old Mercedes cars are really build with luxury and quality in 60's 70's 80's. I love old Mercedes sedans because they were top of quality and still running very well. You probably never been driven in new Mercedes, I am, in S600, S500 and few AMG cars. It's insane good cars. These modern Mercedes will last also 30-40 years if you maintain it

  • @2jzgtejza80

Did you know that 80% of all Bentleys ever made still roll on the road? That's quality.

A 1908 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost still works as good today, 100 years later

I don't know what world you live in but if you ever bothered to check the JD Consumers report in the USA, they reveal that Mercedes have taken a severe downturn in the quality of their vehicles since the 80's

And take some English lessons too, while you are at it. Do not speak English with the grammar of your language

  • @McLarenMercedes

English is actually my 3rd language, so I think that you only speaking 2, since you are from Sweden.

I don't know why are you mad, but i can find even BMW or Ford from 1935 running very good. Mechanic between old and new cars are same, no much difference, only reason why new engines are not reliable, it's because of fucking electronic controls. Leave the engineering to engineers.

  • @Heske1991 actually the 6.9 was offered with ZF with limited slip diff apart from the 3 speed one ;)

  • @Heske1991 in the end, the gearbox doesnt matter. you got torque like a fucking basdard in this car. you'll tear the road up hitting the throttle completly.

  • @Heske1991

All mercedes use MERCEDES gearboxes NOT ZF or Borg warner

The 6.3 uses a four speed DB fluid coupler trans and the 6.9 uses a three speed Mercedes 722.003 trans.

The 6.3 is faster because the engine wasn't designed for a lighter car but the W100-600 and the torque etc is excessive,I know i drive one of each. use

  • @Heske1991

German gearbox constructors producing much much better g-boxes than fucking BorgWarner.

  • MANLINESS!

  • which is faster the e55 amg w210 or this 450sel 6.9liter

  • E55 for sure. More power, less weight, better suspension, aerodynamics better than those of a brick, the list goes on.

  • Sounds like a silly comparison, it's like asking which one looks "better": Elizabeth Taylor (now in her seventies) or 23 year-old Scarlett Johansson. Duuh!

P.S. The former did Cleopatra (then the world's most expensive movie EVER made, by far).

Besides, I think today's M-B don't hold their legendary bulletproof quality since they started naming their cars with a "letter+number" scheme (circa 1990s).

  • Speaking about letter and number scheme...I noticed the badges todays are made of plastic...Those cars all had nice metal shiny badges

  • Ohh what a sweet sound. What an absolute beast of a car. Very discrete yet very brutal when used properly. There's another 6.9 posted that has a turbo added I wonder what that's like after only ever driving a standard 6.9

  • i love this motor 6.3 6.9 is beautiful

  • schon damals das beste auto der welt gewesen das ist mercedes heute noch

  • Yes, John Frankenheimer had some great taste in cars.He loved the 6,9 so much he put it in the legendary chase scene in Ronin. On imdb some retard believes the cgi made chase scene in BadBoys2 was better. What a total MORON.CGI is FAKE.Ronin had REAL drivers and REAL scenes.

  • one word;

    R O N I N

  • Best luxury car of the 1970's. No doubt.

  • Got one - sounds so niiiiiiice!
