  • i wonder if he ended up keeping his job...?

  • Dr. Simmons is a brilliant teacher.(I did a correspondance social theory course a few years ago). His gentle and caring approach to teaching, his command of subject matter, and his committment to theory and praxis raise the standard that all should attempt to attain.

  • USA hired Bin Laden & AA-Zewahiry (Egyptian exile) to collect disgruntled Arab youth from muslim countries, who were not happy with their governments, to fight USSR.

Islamic Teaching of Jihad is for subverting Cruel rulers in own country, Killing innocent civilians of some other country doesn't fall under jihad, Jihad is fight for human rights.

Attack of 2001 on America is not qualified as Jihad.

  • Dr.TONY Simmons & Saleem gave very good perspective about the present role of Canada. One aspect which needed exposure was about Alqaeda, This was a movement for reforms in KSA, there had been 2-subertive attempts in 80's to change the rulers or form of Government.

  • (This lecutre is full of bias...siuch activities fill peopel with one sided stories and people jump to conclusions...)

  • And the mainsteam media isn't full of bias? This is providing another view of the military action in Afghanistan that is not reported. And it is a valid view worth hearing. Everyone should have the opportunity to hear different opinions, and to make up their own minds.

  • yes the media, aroudn here the media is full of newscast fo ceremonies for fallen soldiers and the lastest casulites and anti war protests. Not alot of prowar, but some.

My point is that this "lecutre" had 2 academcis displaying the SAME opinion. I was expecting at least one or maybe a 3rd person be the counter arguement. Especially sicne its a university, id expect less one sided gatherings...I guess pro-war academcis turned down the request...or the organization didnt even try.

  • Actually, someone from the military was on the panel, who had just gotten back from Afghanistan. As well, there were several soldiers in the audience. I did not get all of the arguing between the soliders and the panel on tape, but I did tape the person on the panel from the military and can upload that at another time.

  • Oo okay, good. I just have a thing for bias...Im all for open debate.

  • As well, it was not a "lecture" as such but a teach-in that was promoted as presenting this particular viewpoint on the topic.

  • ...just so long as we agree with you at the end, right? You speak of occupation and invasion, but you don't seem to understand the validation of fighting Islamic Extremism. You are blind. Watch the news.

  • No one here is defending Islamic extremism. Islamic extremism will not be solved by force and violence. You can't kill an ideology.

  • except nazism and facism. war never solved that.. oh wait.. it did :)

  • no, it didn't. the axis were defeated. Nazi dogma, fascist ideology and military colonialism still exist and are still very much a problem. read more.
