I was looking for an up to date verison of this song as on a par with June Tabor's version to share on FB for remembrance day, I've found it! A beautiful rendition using the "correct" lyrics (IMO) and excellent photo slide show as well. A fitting tribute to the fallen that brings a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat no matter how many times I hear it.
Holly, this one is generating interest and discussion here in the US. Ed found it, being a history teacher, he hopes to use it in class (once he feels better again).
I really appreciate your cover and video of this topic. WELL DONE!
We have one "Willie McBride" and one "Almost Willie" in the family. Both uncles, both from WWII. One was injured, sent to a UK hospital, then home. It saved his life, I'm sure.
ps. I saw you at the Southampton Guildhall with Amy McDonnald. did you do just the one show with her or did you do a few.? i assumed you were local..?
This is truly an amazing tribute. Your great grandfather must be looking down at you with so much pride. God bless all those who gave their lives in that conflict.
The way you sang this is remarkable. You have such amazing control; just perfect articulation, pitch, dynamics, and phrasing! Not to mention the overwhelming emotion that lies underneath it all. Keep up the great work and take care.
Originally I was trying to write my own song to remember my great grandad and all others lost to wars everywhere, but when I heard the words to this one, it said everything I wanted to say.
It was very hard to sing though, because of the emotions involved.
I am very pleased that you like my interpretation of the song - thank you again.
Dear Holly, I could not hold back the tears as I listened to you sing this haunting song. Grew up listening to my grandparents tell me of their friends and family who had died -- my grandfather enlisted at age 16, but escaped the fate of your great-grandad. For him, and for all those dying today, and their loved ones, and the children who suffer grievously. You have a beautiful voice! Sarah P.S I want to visit Ireland, too, and Scotland and Wales.
This is such a beautiful and moving video and the Introduction is truly touching. You have done a wonderful job Holly. Your voice is simply awesome. It is good of you to feature this video on your Birthday. Wishing you a fantastic birthday and a great year ahead. Your great grandfather would have been so proud of you. God Bless.
I'm using this for a curriculum unit I'm developing based on a book titled, "The Cave" by Steve McGill. Thanks for a wonderful presentation and beautiful song.
Beautiful version of a song I love. Thank you. And a very poignant and touching letter and story.
Did you know an equally beautiful 'sequel' to this was written by Stephen L. Suffet, titled "Willie McBride's Reply"? It's sung to the same tune, but different, but equally touching lyrics. Sadly, I've still never heard anyone sing it.
i will always enjoy this.she sings it with such feelng.no matter how many times i listen it still brings lump to my throat when ithink of all those brave men
You sing this song so beautifully Holly. Some of the lyrics are different then i normally hear in the Green Fields of France, (chorous) But i like your version. Beautiful tribute
@MelodyStark These are actually the original lyrics as written and recorded by Eric Bogle. The numerous cover versions performed by Irish artists use modified versions of the lyrics. As a matter of personal opinion I prefer the original lyrics.
Beautiful. You can tell you have sung this with alot of emotion. As it should be sung. And I love the wee Irish lilt you put to your voice. When I go to Afghan in June I'll be sure to sing this in a sangar for all us other Micks of The Royal Irish who are deploying there for the summer/winter tour.

p.s. I didn't realise that I had an Irish lilt, but I love it that you think I do :) My family on both sides came from Ireland originally and I am hoping to visit as soon as I can :)
Holly, THIS is the most important song you will have ever done. It is for all humankind. I've 2 unlces fought in WWII(France, Belgium). One we lost. One came home. . .a deeply changed man. I visited my living uncles last battle scene Summer, 2008. Very hard Visiting Dover, Omaha, Ardenes, Flanders [WWI]. It ripped out my heart. I pray God would end war forever. Europe's lowlands are in my blood and heart. My family migrated from there to USA just prior WWI. Thank you for singing this.
I am deeply moved and feel for the pain of your family which was unmeasureable 100 years ago and is only remembered now for the respect given them. God Rest Their Souls.
holly this is nice thing that you have done for your great granddad, and in your video ,you show the thiepval memorial ,if you ever get to see it , look up pier and face 12 D and 13B and you will see your great grandad name there from the 1st batt, middlesex ,reg , and his Awards the MM, and the names of the 72,000 men on the arch , RIP, and rember john condon from Ireland, the youngest soilder to died at the first world war age 14 years, god bless you holly.
Thank you very much for your lovely comment, and for all of the very interesting information - you are very kind to find out all of that for us. My family were very happy to read it also.
Of course we will remember John - how sad! - only 14 years old!
I am a little bit Irish too, with ancestors from both sides of my family.
I had a couple great uncles who were in World War One. They immigrated to the United States from Romania and shortly there after were drafted and sent back over to Europe as soldiers.
That letter makes everything very real doesn't it! It was very strange, but although my grandad never got to see his father his handwriting was the same as the handwriting in his dad's letter!
The contrast between the horrors of war and your beautiful voice are absolutely astounding! Wherever your great grandfather and grandfather are now, I am sure that they are looking upon their precious child with love and appreciation for how you've honored them and the others who we have lost to this thing called war. You instill a re birth of humanity in me and I'm positive, anyone who listens. Holly, you are indeed a blessing to the planet. Thank you for this!
ThankYOU very much for your very lovely comment. I would love to have met my great grandad and I feel very sad for my grandad that he never knew his dad.
I would love to think that wherever they are they can hear my song.
I think I have listened to all the versions on youtube of this great song and yours is still, in my opinion, by far and away the best. Love it. Should be played every year at the UN.
Holly, I am so glad you were able to write and sing this extraordinary song for your great granddad and all those who died in these horrible wars. I say that because I am in tears listening to it, and I don't think I could have done it, especially if it was for a family member.
I again hear music in my head listening to this and may try something as I did before if I can. My Dad died just over a year ago and was almost killed in WWII so it's hard for me to do - maybe I can.
I intended to write a song myself about the wars but when I heard this it said everything I wanted to say so I decided to use it. It took me a few times before I could get all the way through though because it is so sad.
Wow. And thank you. You have heart, and you're not afraid to show it.
I'd also love to hear you do this transposed down three steps...just as a variation. I can picture it softer and more delicate...just, again, as something to try.
holly, once again, i find myself listening to this beautiful song. it's so emotional and heartfelt. i have a picture of my father from WW ll. he passed away in 1988..and i miss him so very much. when ever i look at that photo..he is forever 22. i would like you to know how comforting your song is to me. i can't thank you enough. james
And here I thought that our generation really had "forgotten the men of a forgotten war." Holly, it makes me very glad indeed that you still remember. As McCrae instructed, you carry the torch brilliantly! Thank you.
No, I can never forget! No-one should! I have read books and poetry about the wars and was really shocked and saddened by what I read. It is so terrible that it is still happening.
I wanted to write a song about it myself but when I heard this song I had to sing it as it said everything I wanted to say. It was very hard to get through though.
This was such a beautiful tribute Holly. The tears are streaming down my face. The letter and the post script were devastatingly sad and beautiful at the same time. A can't recall a more beautiful tribute to a family's beloved soldier lost at war.
What an incredibly talent from an absolutely gorgeous young lady. I found your video while watching a vid of the Drop Kick Murphys do this song. Your voice is haunting, as is the song. I've been to your website (love your cover of Nena). Only 18, but the voice sounds so mature. I wish you the best of luck on your future endeavors.
omg that was the day of men when they defended their people their country and died doing it for the freedom of people and life but those cowards that started the war will never be forgivien in my eyeys long live england
for those cowards that called our great men away from there homes to fight for their country these men will always be in my mind fr everything they did and died doing for the greatness of england, america and russia
my great grandad fought in this war and he never made it home to see his son either, i will never forget the brave sacrifice him and all these other soliders gave to defend our country/countries and try and rid the world of tranny. May god rest there souls
I am sorry to hear about your great grandad too. I only really heard the full story a little while ago and now I can't stop reading more about it all. It is very very sad and we will certainly never ever forget the sacrifices they made for us.
I live near Fort Drum, NY. Ive adopted some of the young soldiers there... i give them a refuge, someplace they can get away from it all. 18-22 year old Men who are looking for a friendly face. they are just boys really, Water battles and pranks abound, they are so wonderful to have around, i enjoy the noise they make. My kids are all grown .. I know they will be deployed to Iraq in the fall.. it will kill me if anything happens to any of them. My wife and i prayfor them every day.
Thankyou so much for your lovely comments. I have read books and poetry about wars and I was very shocked and sad at the sort of things that people go through whilst fighting/dying for their country. Something that I noticed in my great grandad's letter (more info) was that he was trying to sound fairly upbeat and trying not to give away the truth of the carnage surrounding him. Having read exactly what he was living in at the time makes me so sad! contd....
Your house sounds like a wonderful refuge for those young soldiers. It must be so hard for you when they have to leave you and your lovely wife. But what great memories of fun and friendship they must take away with them thanks to you :)
Sometimes I get comments and messages from soldiers who are fighting. It is great that they always seem so positive and never seem to feel sorry for themselves.
Hello Holly, I'm a Gulf War Vet and I've been to ground zero, "World Trade center NY". It helps to know what your fighting for. As a former soldier i can tell you, A man is willing to die for his country if he thinks his sacrifice is not in vain, and he is comforted with the knowledge his friends and family are made safer for it. Most soldiers hate war, for we see first hand the human waste and carnage. Soldiers dont make War...Politicians do. Lets hold our Governments accountable.
Sorry, I should also have added that the song is beautiful. Tonight I will raise a glass to the Queen and her Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen. Britain's finest.
My friend´s son died on the 30th of January in Afghanistan. He served with the First Battalion, the Rifles. She will NEVER get over his death. Its not natural that a child passes before the parents.
It will only EVER stop if WE little people do not take up arms. What if they give a war, and nobody comes. ? Then they wont earn on selling arms, or selling our souls while they sit comfortably in their chairs and ignore our losses.
Some wars are utterly pointless and futile. However, unfortunately, total pacificism is total moral abdication. "If everyone was nice like me, there woiud be no wars". I've met children from Sierra Leone who were deliberately blinded by "rebels" who poured molten plastic in their eyes. The British Army helped bring an end to these atrocities. Lethal force is the answer in some cases.
I absolutely understand what you are saying. But, as long as the Media does not report such dreadful atrocities, war will go on for the profit of those selling the weapons. That was my point. Unfortunately the Media is also only the long arm of corruption. But, the more " We, the people" become informed, the faster we can take this Planet back. I know, its a Eutopian thought, but stranger things have happened.
I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your friend's son. Every time I see yet another news item saying any of our brave men/women have been killed and injured it makes me very sad and I straight away think of their families who will be so devastated. I think my grandad (more info) never got over the fact that he never ever knew his dad.
Thank You for doing this. You brought his man to tears with your story and your lovely voice. I think you have a very bright future...you are the real thing. Best of Luck from Virginia!
I wanted to write a song myself for Remembrance Day but when I heard this one I knew I had to sing it because it said everything that I wanted to say. It was very hard to get all the way through without being upset though.
Hello Holly, No need to thank me. Listening to you, in any of your work, is a treat. The fact that you have the courage to honor your Grandfather and so many others, when most today don't care or even remember, speaks well of you. I think you have a deep well of strength inside that lovely, artistic and very talented soul of yours. Play on, Holly, Play on! :)
Good comment, but during the troubles in Northern Ireland in the 70s and 80s, I heard some terribly hateful songs most of which originated in detention centres (jails) and were penned by largely "Republican" prisoners Songs with sentiments like "kill a British soldier" or one amazing song called "The sniper's prayer" So songs of rememberance do not always represent the facts.
Wasn't going to watch another video but then this caught my eye. I'm familiar with this song through the Fury's version but this was exceptional!!! The letter on the right brings the tradgedy of the song to life. great job!!!
This is an amazing song isn't it and really sad too!
Every time I read my great-grandads letter it makes me feel very sad that I didn't ever have the chance to know him and I also feel sorry for my late grandad because he never had a dad to love. His mum never got over the loss and also died very young.
I wonder which is worse? My maternal Grandfather and his younger brother (16 at the time) faced a British firing squad in 1916, but were reprieved at the last minute. Maybe some day I will write a poem or song to remember that event. By the way they were both members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood at the time, fighting to end British dominence in Ireland.
Until such time as common sense prevails throughout the world we shall need our heroes who shall protect us with their lives. A nice tribute to your great grandfather.
Remember the legend of Pandora's box. The only thing we have left is Hope. Let us Hope common sense will eventually prevail. The more power we acquire the more we need common sense.
Well done Holly. The passion in your voice shines through like a beacon of hope. It is also nice that the younger generation is taking an interest in history and recognising the sacrifices that our family men had to take. My Clan lost 137 men in the Great War the last one was my great Grandfather in October 1918, like yours he never saw his only son. I was a Soldier for 24 years and remembrance day is the most important day for me to thank those that have gone before. Thanks again Holly XX
I have to admit that I didn't really know much about WW1 until I started to study it at school, then I couldn't stop researching it.
We visited the place in France near where my great-grandad fell and it was very eerie! When I read the letter (at the side) it made everything seem so close! I am so sorry that you lost so many!
This song is very beautiful but hard to sing because of the pictures it brings to mind.
Thank you for the beautiful rendition if this song, and the tribute to your great grand father. As a serving soldier fighting in the desert, I feel close to anyone that shows the support to us that you do. Again I thank you
It looks like the post I put up never showed - so I wanted the chance to say again, thank you for this heart wrenching tribute. David is ex army and air force and all of my lounge room is full of photos of my ancestors who served, I am so very very proud. David and I march on ANZAC day side by side, David has 4 medals and I wear my Poppa's medals and we march and remember them. Thankful for the men who so bravely fought to keep us safe - Lest we forget - love and light Susan and David xxxx
You are very lucky to have all of those lovely photos. Wow! David must be so brave to have received 4 medals. You must be really proud of him and your poppa too.
My great grandad got a medal for risking his life to save an injured soldier.
Many thanks for posting this, Holly! So beautifully performed, such a poignant song and images. The touching letter adds so much to your post, and emphasises that all those involved were people with loved ones, and who were loved.
Of all the versions of this song on here I have saved yours as the best. Thank you!
It is so lovely to hear this beautiful song performed with such pathos as it was intended. The horrible commercial version by the Furey Brothers should be forever banned!! Brilliant Holly!!
Bravo Miss Kirby!! I really enjoyed your interpretation of this song. I served in Viet Nam and when I heard this song a few years ago by Peter, Paul and Mary it brought back memories.
Such a moving letter quoted in the comments and such a moving song by Eric Bogle. It is a sobering thought that we owe so much of the freedom we enjoy today to the ultimate sacrifice given by those we have never met. A tragic part of history, but we are the hope that they fought for. This song is the most beautiful 'thank you' that we could honour them by and alpet07 sings it perfectly. Every word rings crystal-clear above the backing, as it should be. May there be no more "again and again".
My family's Willie McBride was his son, my mother's brother, the uncle I never knew. His name was William and he died at the age of 19 in WW2. He was a radio operator on a bomber. His plane just disapeared over the channel, nothing about it has ever been discovered.
My grandfather did not see any glory or heroics in war, just the needless deaths of millions of people due to the arrogance of political leaders.
I love Holly's performance of this song and my grandfather would too.
I lost relatives on my dad's side of the family in WW2. My great Uncle was killed on the HMS Barham in 1941. He was in his early 20's, and I know others were lost from his family too.
How awful that your William just disappeared, that must be terrible!
I think many people believe as your grandfather did. The more I read about the war the more angry and sad it makes me feel too :-(
I hope your grandfather and mine too would like this song :-)
It never occured to me before that there is a Willie McBride in my family too. When I showed this to my mother she reminded me.
My Grandfather was in WW1 though not in Europe, he was sent to the middle east where he won a medal for valour during the taking of Jerusalem. He was a medic. I have read the citation, it describes how he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire while bringing wounded men to safety.
My great grandfather on great grandma's side of the family was also in the middle east. He came back but died at about 50 because of being poisoned by something that happened in the war. Your grandfather sounds like an amazing and very brave man. When we are told about our relatives it seems suddenly to feel even more sad and real doesn't it :(
What I remember most about him was the fantastic vegetable garden he kept up until the last couple of years of his life. I think it brought him peace to be able to nurture life after what he had seen in the 1st war and losing his only son in the second. Anyway, thank you again for your beautiful tribute to all our relatives lost to war.
beautiful song, how many times did u have to record this, because your version is so meloncholy and sad that a number of people would have broken down attempting to record it
forget footballers, actors singers these are true heros brave men who can never be replaced. May your grandfarther dine in the house with the lord himself as we will never forget the sacrafices these great men made so we could be here today. God bless you all
Thankyou grwn, for your wonderful comment. So very many sacrifices were made by so very many brave people!
I wanted to write my own song about the war but when I heard this one, I had to sing it because it says all that I feel. It was very hard to sing though.

a proud Canadian. He died 10 years before i was born but i have always felt close to him. I've been trying to know him.
My grandfather never spoke of the war. It was too horrible. it was hell. He did his duty and i would do the same. The only grandchild to follow.

Very moving tribute to your Great Grandad, Holly.
His last letter is absolutely a heart breaker.
I had a couple great uncles who were in World War One. They immigrated to the United States from Romania and shortly there after were drafted and sent back over to Europe as soldiers.

I LOVE it.

Hello Kaskaskia :)

? Then they wont earn on selling arms, or selling our souls while they sit comfortably in their chairs and ignore our losses.
munichlady 2 years ago
Some wars are utterly pointless and futile. However, unfortunately, total pacificism is total moral abdication. "If everyone was nice like me, there woiud be no wars". I've met children from Sierra Leone who were deliberately blinded by "rebels" who poured molten plastic in their eyes. The British Army helped bring an end to these atrocities. Lethal force is the answer in some cases.
TRUFFLEHOUNDEXPRESS 2 years ago
I absolutely understand what you are saying. But, as long as the Media does not report such dreadful atrocities, war will go on for the profit of those selling the weapons. That was my point. Unfortunately the Media is also only the long arm of corruption. But, the more " We, the people" become informed, the faster we can take this Planet back. I know, its a Eutopian thought, but stranger things have happened.

Thankyou for your comments munichlady.

Hi Holly,
I wonder which is worse? My maternal Grandfather and his younger brother (16 at the time) faced a British firing squad in 1916, but were reprieved at the last minute. Maybe some day I will write a poem or song to remember that event. By the way they were both members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood at the time, fighting to end British dominence in Ireland.

Pheenomenous 2 years ago
Hi again Phee...

But he survived, he is not the Willie McBride...

Hi Phee...
My great grandfather on great grandma's side of the family was also in the middle east. He came back but died at about 50 because of being poisoned by something that happened in the war. Thankyou grwn, for your wonderful comment. So very many sacrifices were made by so very many brave people!
I wanted to write my own song about the war but when I heard this one, I had to sing it because it says all that I feel. It was very hard to sing though.
Take care
