@hastwerk: No, not on this design. The 7D is a much bigger, heavier camera, and I optimized the design only for small handheld videocams like the zi8 or Flip units. Keep in mind that when using a 35mm camera, any telescoping of a zoom lens will shift the center of gravity and require rebalancing of the steady cam.
Hello, great video ! I just bought a flip ultra hd and a Creative Vado HD and i would love to make a stabilizer like yours ! Please send me the plans? Keep up the good work i subscribed, thanks !
I am intrigued by your design. Is it possible to send me the plans? If not, can you tell me exactly what type of RC joint you used? I see a few different sorts: rear drive shaft, front universal, rear universal; want to make sure I get the right one. Thank you for sharing your design! peace.
Wow....the quality of that DIY steadicam is amazing....just got myself a Zi8 for Short-film making, until I can afford a DSLR (one day :P...hmmm Canon 7D).... but I am thinking about making a steadicam too....I have a tripod which works perfectly, its just a pain that its static sometimes, good job! :D
thank you for taking the time to make the video. have a great little universal that I have been wondering how to put to good use. Will send you a link to vid when done.
I had sooo much trouble trying to put one of these together. I highly recommend the Cam Caddie Scorpion as an alternative. $38 and you have a effective and efficient steadycam.
@ObjectiveVision I've looked at the posts of any DIY steadicam on youtube and this is the same message I keep seeing. I notice you don't have any uploads to display these amazing smooth shots. Cam Caddie Scorpion is great for skate videos and can provide smooth shots if you're on a board. But after watching actual test footage of people walking, no, it does not provide smooth shots like a steadicam will, DIY or not. It's just a different accessory for a different purpose.
You damn asians are great at this kind of stuff. Not really the tech part (granted, well done), but explaining things well in a calm easily understanble way.
Cool man! Absolutely simple design with 100% efficiency. You're smart. Also I will make this steadicam. I dismantled the tripod from which I use a light tube and the helix to the camera.
Hahahaha this is almost the same design as the Merlin Steadicam being sold for $800!!!!!!! Who are they trying to fool- could there REALLY be $750 worth of advantages in buying one as opposed to making one yourself?
this is a great steadicam tool! would you like to share the plans with me? i really want to make this tool with my little son for a weekend project. thanks!
Very nice to excellent. I am going to make one for me. I've been spending tens of hours looking for the best design and finally I settle with yours. Thanks for your contribution. Please upload your better or modified version if it was ready now. thanks again.

Very nice. I agree. Your design is much better than anything I've seen on YT for the small form camera/phone. Any chance I could convince you to build me one? I am very unhandy when it comes these things but would like to be able to use it for an upcoming video project. Thank you for posting. Kind regards.
@ProjectCarTV: The trail is in Livermore, California (gps coords 37.622175 N,-121.746748 W), near the Wente Winery. It's a short hike with gorgeous scenery, especially in the winter and spring when the hills are green (like in the video). After April or May, it's no longer green. :-(
@branliew Awesome thank you so much! I'm an avid hiker. I've done Mt Whitney a few times, Half Dome, Mt San Jacinto. I'm always looking for new places in Ca. Time for a Rd Trip!
How much did you have to pay for the external mic? And I am in the process of buying a pocket camcorder, right now I have the Zi8, the Playsport ZX3, Sanyo G102, and the flip UltraHD in the running, which one would you say has the best audio and picture quality?
@ustfu The trail is in Livermore, California, and it overlooks part of the Wente Golf Course. During Spring, it's lush and green like you see in the video.
@ShakeAndBakeGuy Yeah, if I find time this winter I might make a bunch of them and put them on eBay, but as of right now I sold the only one I had (the one in the videos). Yes, it wouldn't be difficult to make one for the iphone 4--I'll take your request into consideration. Thanks!
@psycold Thanks for your comment. Surprisingly (to me) several people have inquired about purchasing one, and I've turned them down, but maybe it's time to rethink the whole thing. I did end up selling my "Rev2" version on eBay. :-)
@branliew It's a great idea, I've tinkered with a few DIY steadycam's myself, but mostly basic PVC versions. Like most people I don't have the skills to create a steadycam the caliber of yours. I believe you would sell a lot of these if marketed properly, if you could make it for under $100, there would be virtually no competition in that price range.
Great work. I have made my steadicam from a bicyclepart. I have used a handlebar en put it upside down. On the stick my camera. The handlebar weight i have increased. And holding it on the vertical stick works quite pretty. Not so perfect as you solution. gerben van dijk.
@billydiamond24 The stock was Home Depot special. You should be able to find it at most home improvement places. In my second attempt (see other vid on my page) I used 1/2" round stock, which is much more elegant, lighter, and works just as well.
@pwashington99 Hey thanks. It's in Livermore, California (37.622175,-121.746748), near the Wente Winery. It's a short hike with gorgeous scenery, especially in the winter when the hills are green (like in the video).
Very inspirational video. The results look smooth and professional. I spent about an hour at Home Depot this am picking out materials to build one based on your design.
@gerben1972: I made another version which is a little more elegant and works better. I'll post details very soon. I also found the panning was much smoother by turning off the EIS. Good luck with yours.
Thanks! How you operate it is very important, even for a Merlin. I'm still struggling a little with good dynamic balance, but my next version should be significantly improved. :-)
yeah i found it's very hard to keep good balance while moving on this hand-held style steadicam. it usually swings from side to side! May be i just need some proper training LOL
Keep up the good work

@johnnybrazil01 The narration and sound were done with a microphone during editing. The internal mic on the zi8 is marginal.
