My cats, though one more than the other, totally do that! O_O; Well, not exactly, they out their paw into the water and then lick the water off. They started doing this when we got a pond in our garden and they were afraid of falling in when just bending down to lick water from it. Instead, they reached out with their paw and licked the water off. Sometimes they do it with normals bowls of water etc. xD

Both my cats did this. My previous cat would then lick the water off the sides of the bowl. My present cat gets her paw thoroughly wet, then "drinks" by licking the water off her paw. Incidentally she is right handed (or pawed.)

My Scooter does this, too. I have a theory about it. I don't think they can see that well up close.  I think he may have stuck his nose into the water and accidentally breathed some of it in, and now he smacks it to test the depth. Does that make sense? Because lots of cats do it.

I had a dog that would tip his water dish. Normally he would only do this when it was getting close to needing to be refilled, but occasionally he would do it when the dish was full. He was a big dog, it was a big dish. Many towels were used in drying the floor.
