Actually, they aren't the same; close, but not the same. Creationism is straight from the Bible, no science involved, some 2000 yrs old. Intelligent Design is hardly 2 decades old. It's a hodge podge of pseudoscience that incorporates what we now know about DNA, that says this is just too perfect & exact & complicated to have occurred by chance, which is a direct slap in the face to the mechanics surrounding Evolution. It says that the Bible's version of events is therefore the best explanation.

I'm a science teacher in the Bible Belt & have to deal with this stuff all of the time. Because Evolution is so controversial, us teachers hardly ever talk about any of this, to the kid's detriment. We now have generations of people in the public who only have rudimentary understanding of Evolution because it is so poorly covered in school.

But for practical purposes they are similar enough that the creationist book "Of Pandas And People" was converted to an ID textbook by systematically changing the root word "creation" to refer to "intelligent design". The NAS uses the terms interchangeably, calling them "claims of supernatural intervention" that are "not science". As for teaching science in the bible belt- you are my hero.
