Sometimes the bass just simply miss or they are testing it out first. After they strike and miss. Let it sit. if nothing then, start to reel. But be alert, i bet you they will strike as soon as it starts to move
I think that's a matter of opinion, letting a bass take the offering as opposed to setting the hooking immediately. Whatever works for you. My line of thinking is that if the plug, worm, lure, etc. is near the bass then I set the hook, I've lost bass letting them take it and hooked them, I think it's the mood of the bass more than anything and how they are hitting. Sometimes you only get that one shot and I'd rather take that shot than wait.
looks like you are trying to set the hook to soon. I've caught more bass on the jitterbug at night than any other lure. I caught five 4 1/2 - 6 lbs. bass last summer... and the key is to wait for a couple of seconds before setting the hook.
spitfire, it's true, we get to level out the odds after dark, lol, nothing beats the thrill of a topwater bass hit. We were using barbless hooks in the video. Sometimes I try to lay off setting the hook too soon as well, sometimes it's hard to do that though. Other times when they are really actively hitting it doesn't even matter.
Dude jitterbugs are practically unfair. I can do the entire day without catching a bass, and once the sun starts going down and i toss on a jitter. Look out! Jitterbug racks in bass. When using it though do not set the hook immediately as they strike, give a second or two hesitation before setting the hook.
Sometimes the topwater bite is on, sometimes it's not, weather conditions play a part in this as well. It is still kind of early in the season to expect a topwater bite, give another try in a couple of weeks.
wheatyboi, vary the speed of retrieve, let the bass tell you what they want, conditions vary so you want to do what works on that particular day, very very slow, to chugging ahead fast, and having a lake full of bass helps. If there is moonlight you will want to fish to the tree shaded areas of the lake, look for the darkest spots to fish.
Also remember when nighttime fishing, the fish see the silhouette off the moon so if it is a full moon it is the best time to fish at night/dark. Obviously black would be the best color if the moon is full because it would create the greatest silhouette on the bright white moon. The jitterbug also creates a turbulence over the top of the water which fish hear before the see, sometimes triggering a strike. Good luck this year!
if they just made the bill/cup clear this thing would dominate!

is that a jointed. i find the jointed are better gives better action has a rattler and it never screws up and stops splashing.

@welderMTL when it stops you can just make a pause and continue and it should splash

No but it sounds like a good idea. The stocked painted Jitterbugs I have a red "Dot" underneath on the "hiny" area.

Hey, have you spray-painted any of your jitterbugs black?

R3aper81, WOW, fantastic, what part of the country are you in? It's still a bit early for the topwater bite up here in the northeast.
