because i find wool to be a bit on the pricy side, could i make the "base"/inside from wrapping yarn to make a shape, then felt over it? or do you think it better to just do all wool?
All wool would be best. If you used yarn you should use a 100% wool yarn. You could try using polyester fiberfil, the kind used for stuffing. You can find it in craft or fabric stores. It works all right and is cheaper, but wool is still best because it forms a shape better.
