  • @YouthFreedomFighters This is how you spell "ponies" because the y is preceded by a consonant.

  • Why would Yankee Doodle be cooking spaghetti for his pony? Pony doesn't eat spaghetti.

  • My favorite Don Music sketch of all time. You can so tell Jim was just about to lose it by the third round. I love how Kermit was such an extension of him that it comes out through his performance. Makes me wish I could have been a fly on the wall seeing how often the muppeteers must have cracked each other up during filming.

  • well don it's a haircut

  • ...wait a minute, why does he have a bust of Shakespeare and not Mozart?

  • Don Music is great. Ultra-talent meeting utter stupidity wrapped in a pansy drama queen with poofy hair.

  • funny the muppets is so funny

  • i loved this as a kid

  • Fat spaghetti what the; if macaroni IS fat spaghetti then why say fat spaghetti

  • Except... who would feed a pony spaghetti? Reality check! It's a kid show!

  • 4:15...best part...lol

  • Why does Don Music speak like Pepe Le Pew?

  • It would be funny if he does look like John Lennon next he'll come up with Imagine and change the lyrics.

  • Love it when he bangs his head on the piano.

  • 0 people are....wait, what?

  • Scootaloo!

  • Still piss funny after all of these years.... :-)

  • Finally some smart people... this has been on youtube for almost 4 years, and no one has disliked it! There are actually some "dislikes" on other Kermit clips... those need to hear "here's your sign"

  • It still doesn't make sense. Ponys don't eat macaroni.

  • "Not the sort of music that old Willy Shakespeare here used to write." :)

  • How can he COOK and GO to TOWN at the SAME TIME!!

    :)

  • @navidhendrix He had a hot plate that was powered by methane gas that came from the pony

  • @vampirealdys LOL :)

  • @navidhendrix And he bangs his head to those beats. Genius.

  • man, i used to love watching these segments. don music was one of my favourite characters. one messed up individual he was.lol

  • i love how he ends up rewriting the entire song because he thinks kermit's first suggestion of "stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni" is just far too absurd, and yet those are the real lyrics : )

  • Thanks for posting.

  • LOL yankee doodle went to town riding on a kitty stuck a fether in his hat a called it verry pritty lol just to funny

  • Here, this one jumps right to the scene

    watch?v=cDrCi8HJENE&#t=11m30s

  • Apparently it was on long enough for Lauren Faust and her writing team to include a reference to it in 2010's My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic (episode 18). I'm sure the parents watching got a kick out of it.

  • What? Willy Shakespeare? Did William Shakespeare write music?

  • @pooie0116

I was wondering about that too! I had never heard of that before!

  • @1RichardHunt overanalyzing.

  • @1RichardHunt hahaha i just think it's fine, and there's no need to critique. kids need emphasis right? sorry if that upset you, i didn't mean to be rude. shouldn't have posted it, sorry :)

  • "Don? he wasn't going to town. He was gonna sit at home...and cook for the pony." I lawled :)

  • omg, lmao!!!!! i was having a bad day. But then I saw this and my evening just turned into glorious laughter!!! I think i wet my pants.!!!! This is crazy bananas!!

  • FCKNG EARGASM!!

  • ROTFLMAO..........Classic........I use to get a kick when he hit his head on the keys.....Don Music needs to be the advocate for Aspirin!

  • Listen at 4:35 , it seems that Jim Henson started laughing at the end there lol

  • @bauble24 I was thinking the same thing! I love Jim so much.

  • When I was a kid I always did the "never never" bit and hit the keys everytime I came in contact with a piano lol!

  • He's gonna stayat home. *nods*

Stayat home an cook for da pony.

  • @NULLcHiLD27 Did you notice how did he say "pony" in there? That's hilarious!

  • @sombrerero

What is hilarious about the word "pony" or how anyone is this skit said it?

  • @Smartboy8877

His voice went squeaky, that's very funny, at least for me.

  • @sombrerero

Thank you very much for the information!

  • I would love to see someone ride to town on a kitty haha. That is just classic.

  • I remember being 4 years old watching a taped video of this. In Egypt.

  • Man,I didn't see kids banging their heads on pianos,PC sucks.

  • OH, I'll never get this!!! BAM!!! LMAO I almost choke to death with laughter everytime I see this.

  • ALL ABOARD THE BULL SHIT TRAIN WERE LEAVEING STATION LETTTTTTSS DO THIS!

  • Comment removed

  • Yes LDT hahahaha we can stop now hha

  • Nice to know the Spillios have already found this.

  • LDT! DAWGS.

  • Co-Host was right he does look a little like John Lennon

  • Hee hee, hello fellow Spillios!

  • now your cookin with gas

  • LEEETTSSSSSSS DOOOO THIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSS!!!!

  • LEEEEETS DOOOOOOO THIIIIIIIIIIIIS

  • LETTT'SSS DOOO THISSS!!!

  • LEEETSSSSS DOOOOOOOO THISSSSSSSSSSS

  • Don music was on crack or pills.

  • In german Don Music is called Don Schnulze (Don Schmaltzy in english)

  • No, no, no...that doesn't make any sense! Who, in their right mind, would cook macaroni for a pony in the first place? The pony would be pooping all day and night! Oh I'll never get it, never, never, NEVER! Ohh...*bangs head on piano*

  • The aspirins this man must go thru during a year is probably crazy, lmao,I use to love it when he hit his head on the piano........too classic!

  • At 2:45, if I was Kermit maybe I would probably of said to Don that it's only a song that it doesn't have to be real since Don was fussing that Yankee Doodle was calling his feather in his hat as macaroni. Or I probably would have said that after the line "riding on a pony" the next line can be "he kept a feather looking like macaroni so he nicknamed it as macaroni" or the line can be "he stuck a feather in his hat looking like macaroni so he nicknamed it as macaroni."

  • He must have a yearly supply of aspirins or sumfin to get rid of the headaches he gets when he bangs his head on the keys, lmao

  • 4:17-4:24--is the funniest part when Don continuously rolls his head on the piano.

  • Haha love Kermit at 4:38 trying to hide a laugh!

  • Kermit, from 4:30 to 4:44 is absolutely brilliant. Love his face.

  • This skit is from episode 1152, aired on April 11, 1978

  • Earliest known appearance, sorry.

    Kermit - Jim Henson

    Don - Richard Hunt

They made a great comedy duo, and they both left us far too soon.

  • @ceredigio

You're right. They both were great with Statler & Waldorf, the two old guys on the Muppets.

  • ROTFL, 'Riding on a kitty'

Whoever heard of riding on kitties?

    I remember this like yesterday.

  • @JeterScutaroFan83: And it was also hilarious how he said, "But he's going to TOWN!! How can he COOK and GO to TOWN at the SAME TIME?!?!" x-D

  • @TelephoneRock4ever lol...I'm 39 now...but even as a child, that was my favorite part...lol

  • @JeterScutaroFan83 "Riding on a kitty" That is complete utter nonsense!

  • Yeah, I banged my head into the piano a few times because of him. Hopefully I can still rhyme, though. :)

  • Oh, this is a funny one! When I was a girl, I saw Mary Had a Bicycle on the Sing Yourself Silly video, and it was pretty hilarious.

About time I got to hear the green Alphabeat sing solo! He has a really good singing voice. I'll bet that was Richard Hunt!

  • Actually, it was Jerry Nelson. His actual voice was Richard Hunt though. You can hear his *real* voice more clearly on those Little Chrissy songs with Big Jeffy.

  • So, you're saying that the green Alphabeat was performed by Jerry Nelson to Richard's vocal track here?

  • I kinda knew that.

  • if don would stop banging his head on the piano he wouldn't lose so many brain cells and he'd be able to rhyme lol!

  • True

  • They canned Don Music cuz too many kids were banging their head on the Piano. Unfortunately I was one of those kids.

  • So was my little cousin. Fortunately, he had the sense not to bang his head too hard against the keyboard. Instead, he simply tapped his head lighly onto the keys and rolled it around.

  • Does anybody know from wich year this is? I´m curious.

  • So you have that skit on "Old School Volume 2", right?

Anyway I most certainly do as well. And therefore, I love this song and skit so much.

  • Wow! this is one of the Sesame Street scenes that's stuck in my memory for hmmmm 35 years? thanks for downloading!!!

  • Why does he have Shakespeare on his piano?

  • Could someone please upload the sketch of Don Music writing "Old MacDonald" and "Row Row Row Your Boat (a.k.a.) Drive Drive Drive Your Car" in English?

  • Yeah Drive drive drive your car!! That was the best!

  • That's great!

  • Comment removed

  • Me too.

  • Anyone notice that "Yankee Doodle" is the same tune as "Good King Wenceslas?"

  • same chord sequence, but slightly different melody. Very close, though.

  • Well it took me years to notice the Alphabet song and Twinkle Twinkle little star have similar melodies.

  • That's right, it's not quite the same, but it's funny you should mention that because I remember singing a song in chorus that involved the confusion of those two songs.

  • @gradgurl2007 Only certain parts of it...not the whole song...

  • Barney Theme Vs Sesame Street Yankee Doodle

  • I'll take the second one.

  • Love the second one. ^_^

But when I was little-bitty, I grew up watching Barney. Please don't judge me!

  • Don needs anger managment! lol

    RIP Richard Hunt <3

  • this is so funny... takes a minute to develop, but what would we do without kermit? don music... he definately needs some help!!!! love the crazy jazz. happy 4th yankee doodlers!!!!

  • I was so scared of Don Music when I was little I had nightmares about him! lol

  • You did? Why?

  • I use to bang my head like Don Music on the piano when I was young. lol

Also the 3 puppet guys that sang the song with Don are the ones that also sang the song "What's Alive and What's Not." I dunno though if that song was composed by Don though lol.

  • Actually, the song is called "You're Alive" (my personal fave, btw), and it was written by Chris Cerf.

  • I remember this from when it was new... does that make me old? .... I think Don Music is a little bipolar... LMAO :D Thanks for posting this video... good memories!

  • did Shakespeare even make music?

  • The voice of Kermit is loughing at 4:39!!!!! :-)

  • laughing

  • "Hey Don, you okay?"

    "Yeeeesss."

  • They really should have thought this character through before they did these skits. Kids imitate Cookie Monster when eating cookies. So of COURSE kids are going to imitate Don Music by banging their heads on the piano keys! My brother did that once during his piano lesson. He quickly decided not to ever do it again.

Notice how Kermit's expression changes just slightly on the "Riding on a kitty" lyric, so that he gives us a disgusted look. Jim Henson was a master puppeteer.

  • Kids imitate Cookie Monster when eating cookies? Really? And here I was thinking kids loved cookies because they're delicious when really Sesame Street PROGRAMMED little kids into cookie terminating robots! Maybe people who live in trailer homes were just kids who got the idea from Oscar the Grouch. Ugh. Your comment makes me sad. The idea that a muppet shouldn't do anything that might harm a kid is the reason they write "WARNING: DO NOT POUR IN EYES" on my grapefruit juice.

  • lol is it me or does kermit sort of laugh when he says "he's gonna stay at home and cook for the pony"

  • hihi

"put a fat spaghetti in a pot and call it makkaroni"

    einfach lol

  • oh man these guys must have had so much fun doing that stuff!! it's the funniest thing I've EVER seen!!

  • This song is also on Sesame Street's Old School Volume 2, DVD.

  • The Green Alphabeat certainly had a good type of singing voice as well as pretty much all the others. Besides I wonder which songs you'll hear from the Green one alone with Little Chrissy and the Alphabeats. Like the first two being Don Music's Yankee Doodle song, Count it Higher, and I believe on Drive Drive Drive Your Car after the Lavendar one.

  • Oh, I love this song so much.

  • I sort of imitate Don Music by banging my head on soft surfaces like the sofa rather than banging my head on hard surfaces because that would definitely hurt by getting concusion. Actually I don't bang my head like he does very much, although it's rare in my lifetime.

  • LMAO.........I get a kick every time he hits his head on that damn piano.

But I do remember that there was one song that he did that it seems like NO ONE on here has shown yet......

There was this one song that he sung with some of the kids and gordon, bob, and i think it was gordon's wife and the song was called "Flabbergasted" and it was a funny lil song.

If anyone has that video or knows anyone who does.......I wanna know!

    Peace!

  • One thing I don't get... WHO COOKS MACARONI FOR A PONY?! PONIES DON'T EAT MACARONI, THEY EAT OATS AND HAY!!! OH, I'LL NEVER GET IT! NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER!!!! *bangs head on piano*

  • In "Alvin & The Chipmunks", when Eian tries to make the squrriels sing, he bangs his head on the piano like Don Music does, that seems like an inside joke in my opinion.

  • I forgot that he stuck a pencil in his hair (over his ear I guess). Very funny! The frustration in Don's voice is brilliant!

  • This is so fucking funny... Don Music rules and so does early Sesame Street...Thank you for the fond memories... I keep pissing myself laughing at the comic genius....

  • Do you have Don Music writing "Old MacDonald" and "Row Row Row Your Boat" somewhere? If not, do you know anyone who has them?

  • Kermit turns so Mafiaso when he says "Don, Don, Da Poni is'nt going into town, Da Poni is staying at home", look out Al pacino!!!! Brilliant. Don Music???? More like Gryff Rees Jones

  • This is not only a tremendous sketch for children, but it is of SUPERLATIVE comedic value for adults! This a collaboration of genius by the writers, Jim Henson (kermit), and Richard Hunt (Don Music)! Unbelievable!

When Don asserts "but he's going to town. how can he cook and go to town at the same time?" and synchronizes it in time with his rolls on the piano keys is nothings but priceless!

  • "Don? Don! He's not going to town! He's gonna stay at home and cook for the pony." LOL!

  • "Why would u put fat spaghetti in your hat!!!???"

  • I absolutely LOVE this bit! Much more now than when I was a kid because I appreciate the irony. "That's ridiculous! Why would anyone call anything macaroni... except macaroni???" I almost fell on the floor when he said that.

  • ......if Don keeps on banging his head on

the piano,he's going to get a concussion.

  • Riding on a kitty? You don't ride on a kitty! You'd squash it.

  • Does anyone remember another version of this song? I thought I remembered this video except they had different characters?

  • But he's going to town (BANG) How can he cook (BANG) and go to (BANG) town at the same (BANG) time (BANG).

  • Does anyone notice that Kermit doesn't have his microphone with him?

  • I noticed that Kermit didn't have his microphone with him in this skit of which he would mostly be seen presenting his News Flash sketches.

  • My favorite part is at 4:20-4:27. That's just classic.

  • "Yankee Doodle stayed at home, cooking for his pony" - now I remember this. I actually liked this line as a kid. Now this skit seems so funny.

  • Given Don Music's perfectionist tendencies, I'm surprised he liked the final version of this and didn't scream that ponies don't even eat macaroni! Or do they?

  • Here's something else he could have done.

Yankee Doodle went to town riding on a pony

Sold him to the President who named him Macaroni.

Because John F. Kennedy really did have a pony named Macaroni.

  • I'll never get it right....NEVER!!!! *BANG!

  • You keep hitting your head like that Don you'll get brain damage. Well.......more brain damage.

  • that's the reason why don music never appeared on the show again!

  • Nah..the character more or less died with Richard Hunt

  • I think it was a little bit of both

  • His hair getting messes up is pretty funny

  • BEST Don Music skecth!! :) 5/5

  • Wasn't he Thomas Jefferson to? I see a connection...

  • I put fat spaghetti in my hat all the time. What?

  • is it just me or does don music look like don imus??

  • This was one of the first clips I remember of DOn music

  • Why wud anyone call anything macaroni?! LOL!

  • ...except...macaroni!

  • "Stuck a feather in his hat and called it...called it...called it...OH I'LL NEVER GET IT RIGHT! NEVER! NEVER! NEVER!" (bangs head on piano) Man, is this hilarious or what?

  • As I've always said: you can lead a horse to spaghetti, but you can't make him eat.

I wonder what he gave the pony for dessert? Hasty pudding, perhaps.

  • All's well that ends well.

  • That's using your noodle, Don!

  • This must be the only time you hear from the Green alphabet alone.
