@MrAxekiller58 Metallica didn't rip anyone off. They did it as a tribute to Thin Lizzy on their tribute (covers) album. Moron. Besides, this is very old folk song with HUNDREDS of different variations dating back decades before Thin Lizzy, Grateful Dead or Dubliners performed it.
On January 4, has been 26 years since you went away, but you will always be among us Phil. The Thin Lizzy is still one of my favorites. This fantastic music is never lost.
@mistomen I guess you must really like shitty mainstream music of today that is dominated by a certain kid I won't mention and a certain she-male I won't mention.
@Soldier1287 You Metallica fans have a great sense of humour. I guess it's a must if you are a fan of those sellout, corporate rock whores who try to take people to court for downloading their music, even though they are all multimillionaires. They lost all their cred with a lot of fans on that one, soldier.
For anybody out there who does nt know, THIS IS NOT THE ORIGINAL ,nobody knows where it came from but what we do know is that its an old irish folk song which is why the metallica version will always suck balls.I dont mind metallica, especially the older stuff but come on now, whiskey in the jar, kind of trying to play a dance tune on the bag pipes
@NGxGhostZ Metallica completely misses the point of the song - much like they missed the point of everything untill their careers collapsed and they had to jump on every bandwagon they distained just to maintain their mega-star lifestyles.
there is something about irish folk songs, especially when some1 comes and changes their style for even the younger generation to enjoy, thin lizzy, metallica for example of this song...nice work i love it...
Phil has such soul, and was a real rocker too. How anyone could call Lizzy's best stuff cheesy is beyond me. Saw 'em in' 76 on the JTF tour & it remains the best gig I ever saw - even better than Springsteen at his peak. Metallica? Good God!- but there's no accounting for taste I suppose. Poor benighted souls :)

I like this remake version Thin Lizzy did along along with Metallica's version as well. My favorite however will always be the original by The Dubliners. When you start with a great song it is hard to go wrong unless someone intentionally butchers it.
Why are we forced to watch an advert about shitty r&b music when we're all Lizzy fans? It's like showing adverts about cat shit fritters to Michelin star chefs.
Yeah, it's a traditional Irish song. But to me, it's kind of like Jimi Hendrix covering "All along the watchtower" which to me, blows away the primitive original by Bob Dylan. I guarantee the old timey original did not feature Les Pauls plugged into Marshall stacks.

@SuperDon1214 Actually it's an Irish drinking song and Thin Lizzy is not the band that did the original song adaption. Don't get me wrong I love the song but it can't be called an original since the original is likely atl east 300 years old.

@Josh26Indy I don't rely on the radio to affirm what is considered worthy of listening to. I'd wait all day for them to play something I dug. Radio has sucked so that's why there is I-Tunes, Pandora & XM radio. Let's see Metallica try to duplicate some of the dual lead guitar sound that TL produced, and without overdubs.
@hanksta34 I dont rely on the radio to affirm what is good either... (however it will reflect what is popular) & if that is what you got from my comment... you should reread it. And Im certain Metallica can easily duplicate anything playable on a guitar.
By reading a few of the comments on this page is sounds like there are a lot of folks who'd like to give more props to Metallica than Thin Lizzy for this song. I'll say that Metallica has for the most part sucked ass since the release of the 'Black Album'. I'm 34, and I'll say that I'd take Thin Lizzy's version over Metallica's attempt at relevance any day.
@chinaob Well i do agree that Metallica has sucked since the Black Album... with 2 exceptions... Whiskey in the Jar... & King Nothing..... Personally i don't care for the rest on their newer stuff... However my original point was about 1 song... not their attempt at relevance as you put it... and i don't think their releasing this song was an attempt to be relevant... that doesn't make any sense.

@hanksta34 Yes. I think its better, and so do Millions of others around the world. & to be honest its not the voice as much as it is, as you said..."The Spirit". Sorry but Lizzy doesnt have it. I mean C'mon, Metallica doesnt remake GNR songs... or Ozzy songs... they redid this song because it was a good song to do... but also because most young people today hadnt heard it... & if the Lizzy version had more "Spirit" it would be played on radio not obscure & Metallica never would have touched it.
@Josh26Indy Thin Lizzy are best known for their songs "Whiskey in the Jar", "Jailbreak" and "The Boys Are Back in Town", all major international hits still played regularly on hard rock and classic rock radio stations.
What was deemed "Spirit" in 1973 is a different passion in the current venue. Apples to Oranges my friend. I like the rocking power of Mettalicas version but I like the bluesy feel of Thin Lizzys as well... Check out "Ace of Spades" and Lemmy if ya wanna rock ol skewl..
@Josh26Indy Wow, your gonna go far son, have a cigar or a piece of cheese baby, just calm down and look up crunkcore. Your seriously gearing yourself up for some sort of agitated, cynical life devoid of actual reasoning. God willing you have kids that grow up and stick u in a home coz u taught them no respect. Respect your elders, that saying is older than me and most likely you too. You gotta be nice on your way up cause the trip down probably won't be as pleasant especially with your attitude.
@Josh26Indy the only crappy and cheesy thing is your childish "I don't owe anyone respect" attitude. If you like any kind of music you have to respect your elders because I don't see you out there inspiring people. One day when your life is in the can and you've finished a bottle of whiskey on your own, maybe you'll come back to song and realise that it rocks like the ice in whiskey. Otherwise there's some delightfully shit crunkcore waiting for you on the otherside of the inter-noodle.
@SudoMade Ohh where to start... I dont owe any respect to these people & you havent given any reason why I should. I dont have to respect people who are older than me simply because they are older than me...that is just stupid. And if a song is good youl know it right off the bat... it wont take letting your life go to shit to realise it. & if you wanna make up words like crunkcore & internoodle than it shows what a moron fuck you really are.
hey fucking rookies!! It's legitimate if you say that you like more the Metallica version. No one argue with tastes. But you owe some respect to this band. And if you don't even know who they are, go home and study. And cut down the bullshits.
@magabastardo I dont owe any respect to this group. And studying their music more wouldn't change the fact that I still think they suck. In fact i looked up some of thier other songs... just to be fair about it & they were all crappy cheesy mellow 70s songs... So why is it again i should show them respect ???
I didn't know they spelled it like that! You are a real Metallica fan! LOL! Does those sellout, corporate rock whores still try to stop people from downloading their music even though they are all multi-millionaires? Metallica sucks and their fans are morons. Just look below for proof!
@mistomen Just because a band you like ripped off a song from a different band doesn't give you the right to disrespect the band who made the original. If anyone is an idiot it's you.
@mistomen Oh yeah, Metallica sucks cuz you say so, right. Opinions are relative, and you're not less of a moron for bashing other bands just because you dont like them. Grow up, peace.
@mistomen Oh yeah, Metallica sucks cuz you say so, right. Opinions are relative, and you're not less of a moron for bashing other bands just because you dont like them. Grow up, peace.
@jmoney31705 Ok realistically Thin Lizzy is lame & weak in comparison to Metallica. In 1973 Maybe they were cool I have no idea. But if you took a million people & asked whose version was better Metallica would win hands down. Wake up... go look at the "like dislike" ratios between any Metallica version & any thin Lizzy version
or the Total Number of Views of either version Its a Clear Fact that the Metallica version is Overwhelmingly Preferred. Sorry its just the truth.
@Josh26Indy and you're still a dumb fuckin 22 year old that doesnt know shit except for sellout bands, go listen to kings of leon records you dumb fuck, you white trash whore mother should have scraped you out of her cunt
@jmoney31705 Fuck you you ignorant dickless piece of shit... whats the matter you don't like someone insulting your fag music.... Then dont listen to FAG music... What the matter FAG you dont have any facts to present so you start your insults...
@jmoney31705 Let the troll twat think what he likes, but this is definately a better version than that Metallica crock of shite, and this is coming from a 19 year old so it's not all about age.
@makemeateeshirt humm... well even though I somewhat agree with you. It's not Thin Lizzy's song & Metallica gives credit to Thin Lizzy in live performances out of admiration. That said... I DONT GIVE A FLYING FCK WHO COVERS IT... theres whiskey in the jar.
What does it matter if you think Metallicas' version is better or not. Thin Lizzy is the real deal, they were not just a metal band, they were multi-dimensional, they had country, folk, soul, funk, new wave, soft rock, hard rock and yessss, even metal songs in their catalogue.A tip of the hat from Metallica is appreciated, but Lizzy was way more than just a metal band.
@tryggjo Does Metallica still try to stop people from downloading their stuff even though they are all multimillionaires? Thats real metal. Try sellout corporate rock whores.

SUPERROCKER1970 1 month ago
@mistomen Just because a band you like ripped off a song from a different band doesn't give you the right to disrespect the band who made the original. If anyone is an idiot it's you.

Thank you that you allow me to have an own opinion.
You are so telerant!
Not.

@mistomen Oh yeah, Metallica sucks cuz you say so, right. Opinions are relative, and you're not less of a moron for bashing other bands just because you dont like them. Grow up, peace.

@makemeateeshirt You really don't think Metallica's version was any good? Do you like any Metallica or just more so their version of this song?
mrhoffame 2 months ago
@makemeateeshirt you gotta be kidding me... this is so fucking lame
Josh26Indy 2 months ago
@Josh26Indy its a good thing no one cares what you thinks, thin lizzy is the best, everyone knows that
jmoney31705 2 months ago
@jmoney31705 Ok realistically Thin Lizzy is lame & weak in comparison to Metallica. In 1973 Maybe they were cool I have no idea. But if you took a million people & asked whose version was better Metallica would win hands down. Wake up... go look at the "like dislike" ratios between any Metallica version & any thin Lizzy version
or the Total Number of Views of either version Its a Clear Fact that the Metallica version is Overwhelmingly Preferred. Sorry its just the truth.

@jmoney31705 Now to be fair Kings of Leon had 3 great albums before getting sucked in the black hole of radio success records. PS - Lizzy kicks ass.

@makemeateeshirt humm... well even though I somewhat agree with you. It's not Thin Lizzy's song & Metallica gives credit to Thin Lizzy in live performances out of admiration. That said... I DONT GIVE A FLYING FCK WHO COVERS IT... theres whiskey in the jar.
crapomatic 2 months ago
Love Metallica but there version sucks, Thin Lizzys is so much better, I think Metallicas is shit
samuelgwhyte 3 months ago
dubliners piss all over both craptallica's version and this one, this one is still hugely superior to shittallica's though

@mistomen Yeah Real metal... Dipshit.
tryggjo 3 months ago
@tryggjo Does Metallica still try to stop people from downloading their stuff even though they are all multimillionaires? Thats real metal. Try sellout corporate rock whores.
