  • It would be nice to see how the bokeh looks like. The 35mm has a woolly bokeh for instance, very unusual.

  • what about the vignetting on a DX body?

  • @matsas16193 it would be tiny, you would not notice it at all.

  • Hi,

What is the difference between samyang and rokinon?

  • @ninjashidan the name, the lens is the same

  • would u recomend this lense for a nikon DX camera? D5100 to be exact

  • Dom, please make some review of Samyang's 35 1.4!!

  • can you pls do a review of samyang 8mm fish eye. thanks!

  • Iam telling it oll over the ethernet the last weeks now, these Korean Samyang boys are building the best lenses in the world right now for rdiculuus prices and DomBower finaly sees and admit it too.And look what is happening now,Canon ,Nikon and also Sigma has now answer for it.They are still building lenses whit optical systems from 35 years old from the early seventies.

  • That's for the d7000 crop sensor ???which lens will be good

  • Dom If u have to get a 50mm 1.8 d $130 or a samyang 85mm 1.4 $300 which will you buy ?

  • @pmmj Buy the Samyang orr even bedder buy them both,Ive got them both too.you wont regred it.,The 50mm F 1.8 is the best 50 Canon has.,The Samyang 85mm F 1.4 is the best portraitlens availeble rightnow. Just buy them both.Otherwise Come too my place in the Netherlands and iam gonna show you both lenses combined whit the fotos i have taken whit it.

  • This is what i think.,these Samyang or so cold Rokinon lenses wil be legendary because they are the best lenses ever build till today till nowon.they are bedder than Canon or Nikon and Sigma lenses who all 3 off them asking insane prices for their lenses.

  • will this focus on a d3100 ? if anybody knows please tell me

  • @AbdulAziz348 guess you dont understand the meaning of a manual focus lens. the answer is yes, it will focus on a d3100 but you will need to use those things at the end of your arms…… you hands.

  • @Dombowerphoto Will the focus confirm chip work with the 'beep' on the D3100?

  • @arignumb NO, it's full manual.

  • @crazyasspusshole except for the special chip for the AE nikon version that does auto exposure, auto aperture.... i was wondering if it triggers the beep while manual focusing.

  • @arignumb it doesn't, if you are on 1.4 on lens, you must also set aperature on camera on 1.4, and then you'll get the right result. and it will respond with green dot in left corner (on nikons) if it is in focus :)

but that's all, everything else is manual

  • @crazyasspusshole o: i heard elsewise.. i heard that you must set the aperture ring to f/22 or whatever the narrowest aperture is (just like any other nikon AF lens with an aperture ring) then you can set the aperture with your camera, therefore allowing the Aperture priority mode, the Shutter priority mode, and the Program made. Is that true?

  • @arignumb yeah, but as i heard, you don't need to do that, just match the f/ numbers and it should give you 'right' results. either way, shooting with full manual lens is pointless in Program mode.

  • @AbdulAziz348 ofcource

  • @AbdulAziz348 Im getting the lense this wednesday for my d3100!

I can not let it go by since its soooo cheap!

  • Ive got one too.,itz razorsharp wide open.,ate f 5.6 its mindblowing sharp.It is sharper than a Canon Ef 85mm F 1.2 at f 1.4 Thisss lens is a real Canon KILLER.

  • Very interesting. Would be great if we still have the split focus circle in viewfinders.

  • Haha, "Manky"!! Tremendous Scottish word! The lens looks great, Dom. I just picked up a second-hand Nikon 85mm f1.8 - starting to wonder if I've made the right decision :O

  • I hate you dom. now I have to get this lens now!!!

  • Can you recommend buy this lens, even if i already have a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens?

  • very pretty fucking model! is she on model mayhem dom?

  • @Snakekilla12 i advise just check out her blog, lotsof photos there, her blog link is in the description

  • I've been using this for about a week on a D3s. I'm astounded. I expected total trash, but found a treasure.

The amateurs are going to whine about it being manual; to them I say don't buy one. I'm recommending this to anyone on a budget but needs an excellent portrait lens.

And of course, you have a huge advantage over those who have become dependent on automatic everything, that being, this lens forces you to be "quicker to the draw."

  • i think its time you do a walk through with all of your photo equipment including camera bags. you have got quite a collection now.

  • Hey Dom, i am also considering buying this lens, but can you tell me where you bought yours from and how much for? I live in the UK to.

  • @thomson48 I give all the details about where and how i bought it in the blog, link is in the descrption

  • If anyone complains about manual focus, just say the name 'Carl Zeiss'. Most of their lenses are manual focus, but are able to produce beautiful images. In addition, on most cameras there will be a 'AF Achieved' light, so you effectively have semi-auto focus!

  • I got Rick Rolled! I saw a hot girl, clicked the preview and I'm seeing this lens test lol...

  • @leo140485 she is at the end and there will be more of her in later videos

  • Hi Dom, Im really interested in this lens....I use canon and the canon fit samyang does not have the AF confirm chip like the Nikon fit. So I want to know if your Nikon fit Samyang will confirm focus with the nikon to canon adapter that I saw you use in a previous (old) video?

  • @memoryLane1100 oh maybe. strange the canon one doesnt confirm….

  • Got the 35mm f1.4 from Samyang. Well justified purchase. Manual only can be a bit, hm, challenging at times, but overall it is an excellent lens. And now after great experience with the 35mm I am just naturally curious how performs this 85. And it looks promising. It even might be my next lens. :D Oh, and I use it on the D7000, if anyone was wondering.

Dom, keep up the good work! :)

  • sorry I still love my Nikon 85 f1.4g

  • I would love to see what kind of bokeh it produces but otherwise it looks like a great lens.

  • Yep, it doesn't flare easy, which surprisingly bugs me, cause I love having some flare in sunny portraits :)

Btw, Mr. Dom, the "Bower" version would be perfect for you)))

  • How does your camera meter with that lens. I found out that with live view it meters right but with mirror down my D7000 usually under exposes by a stop or two with that lens. It's easy to fix with exposure compensation tough. Apart from that I have loved the Samyang so far.

  • @viljamip I noticed it does underexpose by 0.7 to 1 stop with my D7000 as well. Very strange... Wonder if there is a way to fix this since I often forget to put the exposure compensation back to 0.

  • I love this lens

  • Is Samyang known as Samyang in the U.S.A.? I know it's a dumb question.... but this lens isn't a Vivitar or Rokinon right?

I'm assuming the lens I found online is this Samyang lens for about 500 dollars, but I had never even heard of Samyang until now so I want to make sure.

It DOES seem like a fantastic lens considering the several hundred dollar difference (at least) from something like the Nikkor 85mm 1.4 lenses or 1.4 at other focal length lenses.

  • @martinaee It goes by a few names. I think Bower, Rokinon and Samyang are one and the same.

  • @tknosojirou Hmm... I'll have to look into it more. On a quick google search I was finding very different looking lenses.

  • Love that you give us real sample shots and do practical real world tests instead of shooting charts. Looks like a real bargain of a lens.

  • I have on one the way. I'm really surprised at how well this lens performs.

Just for laughs, I'm going to try it on a D3s to see how it does.

  • Sharp, but its a Manual Focus only lens and no Nano Crystal coating.

  • @bratvlad Nano Crystal coating doesnt matter, think its superior then Canons coating? its just a marketing thing :)

Good video lens this Dom, ive the 8mm Samyang Fisheye and its quality tho 8mm doesn't need autofocus :) shot at f5.6 and its fine.

  • @Minirappen Thats what I thought so too (marketing thing), but after experiencing with lenses myself, those that do have Nano Crystal coating seem to be more contrasy, do resist more flare and probably sharper. I'm not saying that its better than Canons, just because I simply never used Canon lenses.

  • @bratvlad I have 24-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8 VRII :) and several Sigmas and other nikons to compare with. They' surely a nice piece of glass but imo its just a marketing thing. The expensiv Canons makes beautiful contrasty pictures... yet they market them as a "L" lens :) works just fine.

  • @bratvlad photographers have managed for decades without nano crystal and auto focusing, i can happily skip those benefits for the massive cost saving while still keeping amazing optical performance.

The no autofocus is very difficult though at f1.4, even breathing in and out can make an image go from shapr to blurry

  • @Dombowerphoto That's why I don't breath while shooting a photo :) After I release the shutter button I sound like I ran a marathon though lol

  • can you show some pictures of the bokeh this lens can produce? i'm very interested in this lens...

  • @thephotofans I would send you sample pictures of the bokeh if youtube would allow links -_-

  • I was looking up their lenses and saw they have a fisheye that would be affordable. No focusing though which is a little bummer.

  • @JHVH1 of course has "has focusing" which is being a fisheye though, the depth of field is so huge focus isnt really an issue. Ive just reviewed that lens here mrthaibox123 . com/?p=885

  • Are you maybe going to review other Samyang lenses as well? Like the 14mm. Very curious about that one.

    I appreciate your videos. Thanks.

  • @jlouwes dont have anyothers and cant afford any new lenses just now. I have contacted samyang to send me a copy of their new 24mm f1.4 they got back and said if they have a review copy they would get in touch, so far no chat from them

  • @Dombowerphoto how about the 8mm fisheye? i really want to see you review that lens :))

  • @boymasskara I have the 8mm fisheye and its one great lens! i'd recommend buying it if you have a camera that can do auto exposure for manual NON-cpu lenses like D7000 (Which i use). Entry level cameras like D3000,3100,5000,5100 can't auto exposure so can just shot manual with it. I use the lens in A-Mode and it sets shutter by itself :)

  • @jlouwes I have the 14 mm, it also delivers a great performance(using it on full-frame), but this thing is a pain to focus at 2,8(or basically any aperture till like f/11). The focusing ring is huge and has a very long space between 1m and 3m, and since this is a wide angle - you can't really see where the focus is :( Dunno, maybe thats the isue with all wide lenses, but oh well( Other than that - a beautiful lens!

  • @jlouwes I have the 14mm on a FF nikon...

its great... sharp, easy to focus and feels solid..

only problem is that it distorts quite a lot... so not realy good for architecture...

  • Wooooaa! Blow out... :P
